West Bromwich Albion FC / Re: 2021/22 Kit
« on: August 06, 2021, 10:47:47 AM »
I'm old enough to remember when we wore stripes. I'm actually even old enough to remember when we used to run out to "Stars and Stripes" being played on the tannoy....  :-X

I'm a younger fan (still feel ancient and following Albion for 25 years has aged me considerably...) but hearing that when we had the Astle Day celebrations was an absolute beaut. Would love that to come back rather than Insomnia or Oh Fortuna, or whatever we play now.

To keep this on topic I think all three kits are great. Understand the trepidation over the home shirt but with the shorts and socks they look smart on the pitch. Will wait until the post Christmas sales and probably get all of them for <£20 each

Matty's end product can be questioned, quite rightly. But VI has made a massive point of talking about people who play his system, work hard and are committed (or not) and being very open with letting the press and fans know what he thinks of players efforts. I can see why he'd want to tie Matty down if he thinks he will compliment his style and we can see if that was the right or wrong decision.

He can change a game when he plays well and be anonymous in other games. HRK was absolutely awful under Pulis, Pardew, Moore but actually looked half decent in the Championship under Billic. Different styles suit different players and maybe Ismael is the manager who will get Matty playing his best football. A backup (with Zohore) to Diang, Grant, Robinson in that front 3 with Furlong and Townsend given a bit more attacking freedom might give Phillips more of an opportunity to contribute. If Zohore can pelt it down the wing against blues and set up Tulloch under VI's system, Matty can do that better.

Was always a strong critic of Johnstone but he's warmed on me the past couple of seasons.

Great shot stopper and penalty stopper - kept us in some games last season despite the defence having given up for large portions of the season.

He doesn't command his area well and seems to get lost at set-pieces but how much of that is due to defence losing their man I can't say - and we've hardly improved in that area going into this season. Maybe Ismaels high press will mean the defence are less exposed this season and he'll have little to do.

What he lacks is that little bit of a nut-case edge that a lot of top goalies have. I've never seen him get fired up, bollock his defence and start leading from the back. If the defence aren't doing their job, yell at them. If you're sick of flapping at corners, get out there and win the ball and knock somebody on their backside.

That said I'd be happy if he stayed, not overly convinced by Button or Palmer and can't see who we'd get in to replace him.

The deal needs to be done from everyone's perspective. His "people" seem to be running the show here and you really start to wonder what their plan is if the move they have been angling for goes belly up. My advice would be regardless of the outcome Nathan needs to get some new "people"

His people only make money if he moves clubs so they'll always push for moves regardless of what's best for their client. Whoever's books he's on will want him to move to make them some easy profit. Even if they take a slice of his wages on an improved deal, it's nothing compared to a big lump sum signing on fee.

Get rid, clearly had his head turned by idiots / money.

« on: July 19, 2019, 09:57:25 AM »
As others have said this money coming in will be more useful to us now than keeping him. The swap with Gayle very nearly paid off for us last season and to be able to recoup what we spent on him is excellent given how we will make a loss on the likes of Burke when he moves on.

Worked hard, didn't suit Pulis' ball and did better elsewhere. We wanted his wages off the books last year so him 'abandoning' us is a load of rubbish. If he'd stayed with us last season we'd not have had Gayle's goals or been where we were and he raised his stock and kept his value by performing well elsewhere - ensuring we can sell for a good price. Actually a win-win situation for us all.

Jeremy Peace's thoughts (via spoof twitter account) on our reported second round of talks with Bruno Labbadia...........

I set that account up yonks ago, was a little bit heartbroken when he moved on and didn't want to try change the name and emulate Lai through fear of accidental racism  ;D

West Bromwich Albion FC / Re: Centre midfield
« on: May 31, 2019, 01:16:37 PM »
Biggest area of weakness for a good 2-3 years now.

The games when we struggle the most are undeniably those where we aren't competing in midfield.

Look at the Leeds game at home where our midfield absolutely worked their socks off. Hounded and chased every ball and relieved the pressure (and work) from the defence which at the time were playing god awful kick about ball at the back. Look at the Leeds game away and our midfield was non existent. Bristol City too - we had nothing in the middle of the park and got so exposed and ended up 3 goals down after 20 minutes.

We need at least one Yacob/Mulumbu/Scharner type in the middle to stick some boots in and get ugly, and then some energy to get up and down the park. Our season was over as soon as we lost Barnes. Not being able to run it out of midfield any more meant we reverted to hoof ball and we struggled against well drilled teams because we had to hit and hope.

I'm afraid Bruno is off to Hamburg just something I'm picking up off twitter in German, saying he rejected English Division 2 and other jobs in favour of Hamburg ??

The English second division has probably canceled and in the evening paper HSV is canceled and in t..

Whatever you were using to translate German tweets clearly needs updating - Hamburg just appointed Dieter Hecking. Labaddia has managed Hamburg twice in the last decade and been sacked twice.

I think one of the things raised needs to be the music when the players are coming out. They've taken Insomnia away and replaced it with a dreadful dirge from Chainsmokers. We don't have to go back, but at least pick something with some energy.

I realise it's not quite the most pressing issue, but it needs bringing up.

We've played 'Stars and Stripes Forever' the last game of the season lap of honour and the two memorial games for Cyrille and Jeff which has enough gusto? It's not modern, but it sounded bloody good.

Spending like they have won the lottery, seen it all before.....

Lets see how it works out shall we?

Villa spent £90m in the season they got relegated; spending money means jack pooh. They brought Traore that season too.

Traore confirmed, Dedoncker close to signing for them.

Comparing their owners to ours is thoroughly depressing.

Traore was garbage at Villa in the Premier League. He won't do much at the dingles.

What's the issue with sizing on home shirts? Haven't picked one up yet

They are a more 'athletic' fit lets call it. Basically if you were a large in the old shirt you're an XL in the new. When I went a few weeks ago there were ZERO XL left. Went in this weekend and there's still tons of every size other than XL and I'm guessing they've misjudged stock levels of the lower sizes.

Embarrassing.  This summer is quickly turning into a farce.

Really? This counts as a farce? going to be a long summer for you mate.

General Football & Sports / Re: Salomon Rondon
« on: June 07, 2018, 08:58:31 AM »
Your opinion. Mine is that he's a very poor striker and too often caught offside because of his poor positional awareness.

Reckon he cost us at least 10 points last season with his missed opportunities.

Poor positional awareness? For 90% of the season he was told to stand somewhere near their goal while we booted balls 70 yards to him. Maybe if we had an semblance of a midfield for the last two seasons he wouldn't need to just stand high up the pitch hoping one of those speculative balls forward landed within running distance of him.

Rondon is better when he's got no time to think what he's doing - give him 10 seconds on the ball to beat a man and curl it into the corner of the net, no chance. Let him get in positions to poach or get on the end of someone else's ball he's not bad. Not all forwards can create their own chances.

Bye

Won't be missed. Hope wherever he ends up gets the can't be arsed Jonny of the past year - not even a modicum of professionalism. Our worst Captain in years.

I'll have a go at some of my usual mock ups when work gets less intense. I'm so glad I don't have to scour adidas templates again looking for anything remotely interesting with stripes.

Thick fans who can't read and absorb? I've just been speaking to a friend of mine who is a Dr and a s/t holder who said he is very worried about what will happen next season and  about what will happen to the parachute payment. now I wouldn't call him thick.

Oh no a Doctor AND a season ticket holder who has an opinion? He MUST be right then.

This isn't about opinion this is about understanding the FFP and STCC and the ridiculous way in which sports journalists have twisted the truth to make a misleading headline. We are going to lose £100m a year easily by getting relegated. We'll also lose a lot of wages. It COULD help refresh the squad massively - look at Southampton and Leicester who went down two divisions, cleared the squad of overpaid prima donnas and allow you to start again. If we go down and come back up our wage ceiling resets to £63m a year.

In theory we are allowed to increase wages by £7m a year but anything less than £7m is lost - so in three years we can increase by 21m a year ONLY if we constantly add £7m  - if we increase by £3m then £4m and then £3m we are £11m down on why we could offer as wages (and in theory attract better players. So it's actually in our interest to increase by £7m and be on that line - or we cheat ourselves out of a higher wage cap. That's only ok if those players don't get relegated or we start again.

I'm sure your esteemed Doctor friend knew these intricacies amd also knew this is the EXACT reason we voted against FFP (he totally knew that right?) and can see that if we go down and therefore he less moneycoming in we OBVIOUSLY have to cut that wage bill. And we will, because half the team will leave.

Now back to the topic at hand - the issue here is the reaction by fans to a non story - everyone should know  we were at the absolute limit of our wages and have been for three seasons or so. I'm absolutely certain EVERY team in the league is operating at the with spending that extra £7m a year. If you don't then other teams LITERALLY overtake you with regards ambition.

It's pathetic and choice word journalism.

Anyone with half a brain knows we can increase our wages, as a club, by £7m per year. That's around £135k a week more each season. That's an extra 5k per player in the 25 man squad. It's NOTHING in the grand scheme of things.

Jenkins has said we are running a fine line with regards to the STCC measure and that we can't pay any more with regards to wages. This is COMPLETELY different to 'NO MONEY TO PAY PEOPLE'. Anyone with half a brain and an understanding of the reasons we opposed FFP is because of THIS measure.

The uproar from some of our thickest fans is ridiculous. They can't read and absorb information without it bypassing their brain and talking straight out their arses.

West Bromwich Albion FC / Re: Do you really need to do this any more?
« on: February 19, 2018, 10:11:56 AM »
Said it a hundred times on here: we are not needed in any capacity for the club to continue. The club could shut its doors to fans for an entire season and still get paid £90m without a single penny spent by fans.

We pay to be entertained, not to keep the club afloat. As soon as the entertainment goes, nobody should feel guilty about not paying or going. You wouldn't buy a box set of a show you grew tired of two seasons ago and subject yourself to something that brings you no joy.

Rondon outstanding today.

Hegazi his usual solid self.

McClean is no where near the best player in our team but he works his socks off when we pay better players more money to do nothing.

Other than those three and Grzregorz at times, I couldn't give a shiny pooh what happens to them.

General Football & Sports / Re: VAR
« on: January 31, 2018, 09:18:31 AM »
VAR should be used for offside decisions, unclear penalty situations and off the ball incidents.

It shouldn't be used for things like jostling in the box or checking every single goalbound shot for someone in an offside position who may or may not have been in the goalkeeper's way.

On top of that do away with any non clear cut rules. The offside rule used to be a player in an offside position couldn't receive the ball in an offside position. Then it changed they could get the ball if they came back onside to receive it. Then it changed they couldn't be offside at all whether they received it or not. Now it's they can be offside but can't be seen to influence the play in any way including blocking people's VIEW.

Jesus - change it back to not being able to receive the ball in an offside position and be done with it. Anything purely subjective like 'blocking vision' is so ambiguous.

Most of Talksport saying the same thing he could have worn the iconic number 9 shirt of malcom macdonald being roared on by the toon i hear some cry, i think we the albion have more iconic number 9s than them

Talksport are pathetic with their controversial opinions to spark debate. Adiran Durham makes my urine boil - I listen to him before I go to the gym to whip me into a frenzy.

A player choosing a club close to his hometown roots and not upend his family (he still lives in the Midlands I believe) and not put MONEY first should be respected, not criticised.
