General Football & Sports / Jake Livermore
« on: January 16, 2017, 12:40:51 PM »
Looks like it's time for its own thread....

Albion have turned their attention to Jake Livermore after missing out on Morgan Schneiderlin and have approached Hull City with an offer.

Head coach Tony Pulis, who missed out on Schneiderlin last week when he joined Everton instead, wants to bring a central midfielder into his team this window.

The size of Albion's opening bid is unknown at this stage, but it's believed to be lower than the £18million they offered Manchester United for primary target Schneiderlin.

Having let Craig Gardner join Birmingham City on loan last week, Albion's central midfield options are light at the moment, and Pulis brought 18-year-old Sam Field off the bench at White Hart Lane on Saturday.

"Obviously we need to bring players in," he said. "We have to improve, everybody knows that. But whether we get what we want we have to wait and see."

From the Express & Star...

A security guard at West Bromwich Albion’s training ground stole a player’s football boots, a court was told.

Trainers belonging to Baggies midfielder James Morrison and boots belonging to Graham Dorrans were among the items taken.

Aaron Hinds, 25, of Cheadle Drive, New Oscott, Birmingham, told Walsall Magistrates Court he stole the kit from the training ground in Birmingham Road, Great Barr, as he could not afford his own.

The father-of-one stole trainers belonging to Morrison from the changing rooms on August 20 and boots belonging to Dorrans on August 29.

He was also caught on CCTV taking keys to the ground’s laundry room where he stole one of the club’s t-shirts in a clear bag on the same date.

Hinds admitted two charges of theft and one of burglary at Walsall Magistrates Court yesterday.

Miss Maxine Mcintosh, prosecuting, said on August 29, the manager viewed CCTV footage and saw the defendant in the boot room. He was seen to conceal a pair of boots inside his jacket before leaving.

She added: “On August 20, footage depicted him entering the laundry room, but he did not have permission to enter that room and had taken keys to gain access. He exited five minutes later with a t-shirt inside a clear bag. He was then seen on CCTV going into the first team training room and stealing trainers belonging to James Morrison. All of the items have been recovered.”

Hinds said he had intended to use the kit to start playing football as he did not have the money to pay for his own.

Mr Baldev Mehay defending said: “Mr Hinds admitted the offence at the earliest opportunity. He is in a steady relationship and has a daughter and now has full-time employment as a driver.”

Presiding magistrate Margaret Jackson said: “This is a deplorable offence and you have not only let yourself down but you have let your colleagues down.”

Hinds was given a 12-month community order with 200 hours unpaid work. He was ordered to pay £85 costs His partner Tanya Cotton, 23, also of Cheadle Drive, pleaded not guilty to the theft on August 20 and will appear before Walsall Magistrates Court on February 3.

West Bromwich Albion FC / Pablo Ibanez joins Blues
« on: August 19, 2011, 08:23:47 AM »
Centre-half Pablo is being watched by Ipswich with a view to a potential loan move.

The Spanish international, who joined from Atletico Madrid last summer, is showing little signs of progress at Albion.

Pablo struggled under Roberto Di Matteo and has played just one competitive game under Hodgson, with Michael Appleton also opting against him in his solitary game in charge.

Town scouts watched him in action in Tuesday’s reserve game against Everton.

West Bromwich Albion FC / Dave Matthews diagnosed with cancer
« on: June 25, 2011, 08:27:42 AM »

WEST Bromwich Albion's long-serving kitman Dave Matthews is facing a battle against cancer.

The 65-year-old was recently diagnosed with non-Hodgkins Lymphoma and has already started a course of treatment.

But Matthews, who recently celebrated 50 years with the club, is confident of returning to his role as soon as possible.

His daughter Clare said: "Dad wants to thank everyone for their well wishes and kind words of support that he has received following his recent diagnosis.

"His chemotherapy has started but he is upbeat and determined to get back to his best in quick time."

More than 360 attended his anniversary dinner at the Hawthorns back in March, with about 60 former players marking the occasion.

Current boss Roy Hodgson was at the celebration, along with ex-Hawthorns managers Ron Atkinson, Johnny Giles, Tony Mowbray, Ossie Ardiles, Keith Burkinshaw, Brian Talbot and Bobby Gould, as well as current and past board members.

Dan Ashworth, Albion's sporting and technical director, said: “We were saddened to hear about Dave’s illness and we wish him a speedy recovery.

“The large number of ex-Albion players and managers that attended Dave’s anniversary dinner to celebrate his 50 years of service to the club showed how well respected he is.

“His dedication to his job as kitman and the club is second to none and it is typical of his character that he is determined to beat this and get back to the job he loves as soon as possible.”

John Homer, chairman of the Albion supporters club, added: "It's come as a shock especially so soon after the wonderful dinner we had for him.

"We are all thinking about him because he is such a great man.

"You only had to see the turnout to know how popular and well-thought-of he is.

"We will do all we can to help him to get through this - everyone is being very positive that he will have a speedy recovery."

Get well soon Dave

West Bromwich Albion FC / Jara disciplined for drink driving
« on: June 24, 2011, 11:31:34 AM »
Source; Express and Star

West Bromwich Albion defender Gonzalo Jara has been “severely disciplined” by the club after he was convicted of drink-driving.

The 25-year-old Chilean international was banned from driving for 17 months and fined £1,065, plus costs, at Sutton Coldfield Magistrates’ Court.

He pleaded guilty to driving with an alcohol reading of 65 microgrammes in 100 millitres of breath – when the legal limit is 35.

The incident happened in the early hours of May 15 in Summerfield Road, Sutton Coldfield.

In a statement, an Albion spokesman said: “We are aware of the outcome of the court case and have treated this matter very seriously.

“As representatives of West Bromwich Albion, all of our players have a duty to set the right example – particularly to our younger supporters – and we do not in any way condone drink-driving.

“On top of the court’s ruling, Gonzalo has been severely disciplined by the club as his actions, which occurred before our end of season gala dinner, reflect poorly on the good name of West Bromwich Albion.

“Gonzalo is extremely remorseful for the embarrassment he has caused himself and the club, which is very much out of character.

“Having previously been a model pro since arriving from Chile just under two years ago, he has promised such conduct will not be repeated.”

A police spokesman said: “A 25-year-old man was arrested just before 4am on May 15 after being spotted driving erratically along Birmingham Road in Sutton Coldfield.

When stopped his eyes were glazed and speech slurred. When spoken to, his breath smelled of alcohol.”

Jara, who can also play in midfield, joined Albion for £1.4 million from Chilean side Colo Colo in August 2009 and has made 50 appearances, scoring two goals.

He signed a new three-year contract with the Baggies in August last year, shortly after playing a starring role for Chile at the World Cup in South Africa, where the South Americans reached the second round. He is now out of the country on international duty but is due to return to The Hawthorns for training in July.

West Bromwich Albion FC / Chris Wood
« on: June 21, 2011, 03:29:53 PM »

Albion striker Chris Wood is targeting a place in the Baggies’ Premier League squad as ‘loan club’ Brighton wait in the wings to hire him again.

The teenage forward won rave reviews from Brighton manager Gus Poyet for his role in the south coast club’s barnstorming promotion to the Championship and is ready to offer the 19-year-old another run next season.

But the bustling young New Zealand international is geared up for a major push during pre-season, training to convince head coach Roy Hodgson that he is worth a place at Albion.

Wood said: “I hopefully want to push my way into the West Brom side during the pre-season.

“I want to show a bit to the new manager. I spoke to him when I went back a couple of weeks before the end of the season and he said he wants to see what I can do.

“It’s good to see that he’s interested and I hope he likes what he sees.”

Personally I don't think we will make a decision on Wood untill towards the end of the transfer window when we see what other options we have in place. I don't think there would be a shortage of Championship clubs looking at him.
