Don't get taken in, guys. Mel knows he's going to be made to walk so he's acting like he's calling at least some of the shots so that he can credibly tell prospective employers that the Baggies wouldn't agree to his plans despite saving them from relegation bla bla bla.

JP isn't the only one with a bit of cunning!

Just because I am honest and have my views and am not a sheep, doesn't mean I can't express my views and opinions.

Seems strange though, how in the end most people come round to my way of thinking. 8)

Delusional - as well as an irritating nuisance  ::)

General Football & Sports / Re: Richard Garlick
« on: February 25, 2014, 03:58:59 PM »
The most interesting thing about the article is- from where was it sourced? There are no attributable quotes.

If Albion are "considering an overhaul of their player recruitment and scouting unit" they would surely do this behind closed doors. How would the Press get wind of it? A mole? It's hardly come from an official Press Release.

The article is at least obliquely critical of Dave McD, is generally full of praise for the scouting set up, warns that established scouts might get the heave-ho but goes no further than suggesting a redefinition of Garlick's role.

I can't help feeling that such a redefinition might actually appeal to Garlick.

I'm also guessing that (either) Dave McD's days are numbered OR his role is to be cut back OR that somebody, somewhere (who has the Press's ear) wishes it to be so.

It may be wishful thinking on my part but it has crossed my mind that maybe Dan Ashworth could be set for a dramatic return.

Unlikely you may think, and I'm certainly not ITK but if it happens just remember you heard it first here!

Zoopla taking the moral high ground 23 days after the incident? Their contract was up in the summer and now everybody is talking about them pulling out of the club when that's what would have happened anyway. Publicity stunt, 100%.

Totally agree. That's why they've chosen to do it today when we have a televised match tonight so they will maximise their airtime exposure.

no one knew what it meant when he did it, and my point is weather you feel he shouldnt or should have done it or, weather you dislike or like anelka you cannot allow any sponsor to dictate who you can pick to play in the team. otherwise you might aswell get someone from zoopla to come and pick the team every week and not bother having a manager/head coach.

Agreed. If Sky Sports tried to influence our team selction all hell would break loose!

Yet their sponsorship through the EPL is worth vastly more than Zoopla's crummy £3M.

I seriously doubt they can cancel their contract in midstream just because of a vague and dubious and open to interpretation gesture by a single player which is not endorsed by the club as a whole but they can opt not to renew.

If they try to renew after trying to influence team selection then I suggest their sponsorship is against the spirit of sport and should be rejected at all costs and indeed I think that the FA and Premier League should seek to prevent them and any other organisation that meddles in this way from ever sponsoring another team again.

I didn't realise that the Daily Mail and General Trust owned 50.8% of Zoopla  until I did a little research (as per an article dated Nov 2013).  They want to float on the Stock Exchange in the near future so don't want any bad publicity to affect that floatation.

Link that with the Daily Mail loving this story - and their potential lost profits - I'm guessing that they want out of the shirt deal asap so drum up the moral disgust so making them look good.  The weird thing is that looking at some other forums, the majority seem to be 'so what?'.

Like football, its all down to money.  Maybe some moral issues if/when the interpretation is decided upon (and that can only be made by one person - Anelka himself) but still money at the end of the day or Zoopla wouldn't give two hoots.

Interesting since the main media critic of Anelka (outside of the special interest and perhaps biased - allegedly - Jewish Chronicle) is one Martin Samuel of the (what a coincidence!) Daily Mail.

Mr Samuel couldn't also have Jewish sympathies I don't imagine...

I also wonder whether the fact that Anelka is Black and a Muslim encourages a journalist who writes for such a rag to exploit the venom.

OMG there are so many sub agendas here.

And of course the reason the French Govt is so up in arms about it is not because the gesture invented by the comedian is anti Semitic or even anti Zionist it's because it's ANTI THEM!! And they're running scared because he's popular and as Le Pen has shown there is strong support for that kind of political stance in France. Anelka is also an easy target because of the way his French international career ended.

Did well at Bordeaux and not too badly at Marseille, 45% win ratio. Had a mixed career in the middle though, 63 win from 220 games. But did win Ligue 1 with Bordeaux. Played as a Goalkeeper as a player, so wonder what tactics he'd bring to the fold. How many managers do you know that were previously goalies? I can't name any from the top of my head.

Jock Wallace for Baggies with long memories

And is he as handy with the Chocolate HobNobs?

To be honest I think Downing and Kiely should of gone aswell, I think the head coach should decide there own staff and what they feel comfortable with.

So you'd have had Doris the tea lady as your caretaker boss?  :o

« on: October 12, 2013, 12:16:19 PM »
Saido is a class act you can see it a mile off, he will be a top, top, striker.

Comparisons with Cunningham are stupid though, different types of player completely. Cunningham much more skillful and explosive, Berahinho much more of a finisher. Berahino WILL be a star at an elite club.

Both have played as striker and winger. Both lean and quick. There are differences of course but comparisons are hardly "stupid "

Okay if you don't like the comparison with Luke Moore  how about Nugent, Darbyshire, Lita and Vaughn who were the forwards that England under 21's took to the 2007 European Championship who at that stage of their careers were attracting rave reviews but have hardly set the world alight since for whatever reason.

The point being is all we have seen from Sadio is a few good games it has not been sustained for a season let alone two. I do not doubt he has potential but the worse thing to do with a young player is over-hype them and mentioning him in the same breath as Cunningham and Odemwingie is certainly that. Lets see how he does over the next couple of years if he continues to develop then maybe those sort of comparisons become legitimate.
Well I'll trust my own eyes and judgement. I knew the quality of PO inside 90 minutes. Laurie inside 20. If I'd waited 2 years he'd already have been in a plane to Madrid! This boy has the right mental makeup

FFS  can you guys not see what's in front of you? Or I'd this a lack of historical perspective? IMHO this guy has the potential to be bigger than PO and he reminds me a lot of Laurie hesitate to say so because of the pressure. But comparisons with Luke pooh do me  a favour !

Something I've been thinking as well tbh. I think Big Vics hold up play, Anelka's touch and awareness and Long's work-rate will be big assets for us this season. However, can you imagine the 15 goal Odemwingie from our first season in this line up - we'd be devastating. I think we look an excellent side but we're probably missing that 15 goal a season striker to take us to the next level.

I think you'll find his name is Berahino

« on: September 12, 2013, 12:27:19 AM »
Long whatever his strengths is terribly out of form. I can't remember a worse example in 50 years of watching Albion. Maybe a change of agent would help.in the meantime I would start in front of him Anelka, Berahino, Ani hebe, sessegnon, Sinclair in fact almost anyone except Rosie ( and I'm not even sure about that) A lot of managers end up being sacked because of one player they insisted on sticking with. I fear Clarke 's will be Long

Standaman I agree with you, it is a different game today. The point I am trying to make is that Anelka, Anchobie, Long and Vydra will be ahead of Berahino for the next 12 months if only because of the money we have paid for them (Rosenberg is a different story)
Training and sitting on the bench wont make him a better player-only playing games will. Dawson has done well out of a loan to Bolton and I still think that a 3 month minimum loan to a top end championship club will benefit all parties. Throwing him into a struggling first team wont help him.
Clarke wont play him after recruiting forwards the way he has this summer
When you say 'this makes me laugh' I presume you mean the way the game is in this era and in that respect I agree that the modern players are far too pampered and the poor dears cant play 30 games in a season let alone 50 !!!!

Yeah - he was sensational for Bolton. He's come back and is now 4th choice ::)

I was semi serious.

Think Appleton, Hodgson and RDM will all be at least discussed

20
If its not Clement it will prob be one of three former Albion bosses I'll leave you to guess which ones.

Wake up Baggies!

This is our best forward prospect since the late 70's.

Did we send Cunningham and Regis into a lower division to " gain experience"?

No we effing didn't!

Berahino seems to be most people's no 1 "get rid" option (albeit on loan)

For me he's our no1 retain option.

Keep him and Anelka and probably Sess and any rejects come out of the rest (prob Long and Rosie no matter how harsh)

We don't want him scoring 25 in the champ - we want 10-15 in the Prem - for us!

22
He fits the profile.

What would his brother think?

I take exception to the Happy Clapper comment which to be honest is pathetic and a cheap shot at people who don't see things like you.

I'm neither a happy clapper at one end or a doom-monger at the other end. I just wait to actually see a player play in the position we sign them to do before writing them off. It ain't happened with Rosenberg and unlikely it ever will which is fine and we move on.

In future lets call all those who use Happy Clapper in this way Angry Crappers shall we?

If he has an Albion future it's inexorably linked with Anelka. His best contribution (in per season) came through their understanding and interchange. Of course Anelka is not a typically British style player either but sheer quality carries him through.
