Heading the Football
« on: January 16, 2020, 06:38:23 PM »
Breaking News: The Scotland FA is banning heading the ball in training for Under 12’s

But should heading the football be banned altogether and at every level?

I can see the day when it will be banned and in my opinion, it will take something away from the game. But I’m not heading the football every day and taking the risk.

A lot more is being understood about the dangers of concussion and it's accumulative effects. When I'm not at the Hawthorns I volunteer as a youth Rugby coach, the RFU have been over this for years. What there main concern is if a concussion occurs the player is protected as the risk and repercussions from a second head injury are exponentially increased if they have not recovered from the first injury.

Sorry but that's crazy! What people need to realise the ball is a lot lighter than it was in the old days of the leather ball with stitching

No need to tell me about it.
When that ball hit you, it made you see stars.
Compared to then (in the 60's) it is just a ping pong ball.

Ridiculous. At those ages, children need to be regularly practicing their footballing techniques and that includes heading a football. Otherwise we will deprive them of a fundamental asset in the game of football.

Football can increase its reactions and be proactive in managing concussion & other brain related injuries but these needs to occur throughout an individuals career, from a young age onwards. It should not resort to removing an asset of the beautiful game to cover up their own historic deficiencies

Remember it well
If it caught you right you'd have the imprint of the lace on your forehead for a week after, especially if you were playing on a wet pitch.

It is, and seems unnecessary considering I don’t think kids play 11 a side until that age, so crossing and heading is quite limited with small sided games and goals.

Never understood heading really given the game is called FOOTball. It will be alien to expect a kid to suddenly start heading the ball come 11. I think this change will eventually see heading phased out by default.

That's tactics Jacko. I'm not sure how old you are but i will be 60 in May and remember the old leather footballs they used. Laces in  and got very heavy when wet. The balls today are a lot lighter.

I don’t know enough about the science and the research to comment with any authority. I think it would be a shame to lose heading from the game completely, but I understand the reasons for taking it out of the junior game.
