Albion Matchday Forum / Re: Credit Wolverhampton Wanderers
« on: May 08, 2011, 05:15:41 PM »
The disappointing but entirely predicable thing was that we were outfought by a team who just wanted (and needed) the points about 3 times as much as we did. I thought we showed for 20 minutes in the 2nd half that we were a better team than them, but for the other 70 minutes we deserved to lose, so 3-1 about right

Dreadful I thought. Has now had some time to get fit and had some game time with QPR, so have run out of excuses for him. Has one foot, no head, and is easily read by defenders. No ball control either. Quite simply hasn't realised his potential and needs to be moved on. This wont be easy given the length of his contract, which I thought then and still think was an act of madness. I feel sorry for him that he's had such bad luck with injuries, but I am convinced now that he's not prem standard and never will be

Carson 8 did well considering he had virtually no cover. Contender for MOM
Jara 3 Needs to go
Meite 4 Needs to go despite his recent resurrection. 2 bad mistakes in consecutive matches
Olsson 5 Not at his best
Shorey 6 Best of a bad lot in the back 4
Mulumbu 6 Not at his best. Looked frustrated at times, understandably
Morrison 4 Not a defensive midfielder, though I still think worth his place in the squad.
Thomas 6 Thought he did ok considering 1st match back, but little support
Tchoyi 6 Unlike some on here, thought he did ok and tried. Some skillful stuff but inconsistent
Pete 7 Tried hard but just didnt happen for him today. Much improved penalty from his last effort
Cox 5 Not at his best, but few of them were
Miller 1Awful. No more chances. Has to go though may be difficult with his length of contract (madness)
Fortune 2 Poor, verging on awful, needs to be shipped out pronto

That stream from a Villa fan a few posts back is one of the best rants I've seen in ages lol. He seriously don't like us very much by the sound of it.

I just think that the whole MOTD format needs an overhaul. The 3 presenters are all so smug and arrogant and ignorant and full of themselves that they are an embarrassment. Far too comfortable for their own good. I regularly cringe at the self satisfied nonsense that they spouy

No. the first one is the total number of shots (on and off target)
The second one is just shots on target
In other words, we shoot the 3rd most and we shoot accurately the 5th most !!!!

It also tells us that we are slow starters, which we maybe need to address

West Bromwich Albion FC / A few interesting stats
« on: April 24, 2011, 08:25:09 PM »
Just looking up Sky's stats tables and a few curious things about our season so far:
In the "first half" table we are 19th
In the "second half" table  we are 8th
We have had the 3rd most shots on goal after Chelsea and Arsenal, yep, more than Man Utd
We have had the 5th most shots on target
Not sure what any of this tells us tbh. Any ideas?

I think we'll lose to Spurs and lose to Villa who seem to have found a bit of form unfortunately. Then it depends how the table is looking. If we are virtually safe by then, I think we could get a couple of wins at Wolves, Everton and Newcastle. If not, then I can see the nerves setting in and us crawling over the line with a solitary draw or something like that.
I cant believe the optimism of people predicting 50+ points. We won't get anything like that, not even 45 imo. And will people stop predicting a win against the Vile. It was exactly the same in the last match we played them and look what happened then. If you must be an optimist predict a draw ffs. Actually, it amazes me how anyone who is an optimist can also be a West brom fan lol.

Wolves, Blackpool and Blackburn for me. I think Wigan have the morale and spirit to stay up. .....and 18/1 seems a good price for me to be proved right.

West Bromwich Albion FC / Re: Carson - time to go?
« on: April 17, 2011, 12:50:43 AM »
This is my view :
During a match, we as supporters SHOULD NEVER BOO OR JEER ONE OF OUR OWN PLAYERS. It is absolutely unforgivable. Chelsea fans went up 2 notches in my estimation for their support for Torres. Our fans that booed and jeered went down several notches, not that they will care what I think.
Maybe we do need a new gk next season. I should think Carson has had it with us anyway and Myhll is ok but maybe we can attract better. But for the rest of the season we should support all the players in the team for giving us our best ever season in the pl. Thats what I think but I also think I'm just stupidly naive and it will inevitably carry on
It tears me up seeing everyone arguing over this, but I fear it will go on and on for the next few weeks. Really it puts a dampener on what has been a wonderful season so far.

West Bromwich Albion FC / Re: Name 10 clubs bigger than us
« on: April 15, 2011, 07:28:32 PM »
Man Utd - obviously
Liverpool - obviously
Arsenal - obviously
Tottenham - obviously
Man City - bigger than us in all respects apart from history
Chelsea - again, hard to argue with in most respects
Sunderland - also bigger than us unless history is the main test
Newcastle - as Sunderland only more so
Everton - bigger than us, but not by as much as the others above
Villa - much though we might like it, don't think we are a bigger club
West Ham - probably a little bit bigger than us but not much
Leeds - bigger than us as a club I reckon, though I'm praying they dont get promotion as its nice to see them not in the top flight.

Of the others in the prem, we are bigger than Wigan and Blackpool without a doubt. We are probably bigger  than Blackburn, Stoke and Fulham by a little bit, and about the same as Wolves, Bolton, and Blues

The above  is where I think we are at the minute, but of course, if you look at history we would be well above the likes of Fulham and Bolton plus a few others, but I dont think that past performance should really be a big factor in judging who is the biggest club now. If it was, then a few clubs in the lower divisions and a few that have gone out of existence altogether would be in the frame

3163
Good grief, the number of posters predicting 3 points against Villa is frightening. With this amount of confidence (or wishful thinking?), we're bound to get beat

Doesn't Mexican seem a bit poor? It's really only for Vela, who has only played a few times and is going back at the end of the season. If we stay up, it just seems to me to be picking out one player who isnt ours anyway rather than everyone in the team who have shared the effort. At the moment, from the current suggestions, I like the flags representing the nationalities of all our team. It would look awesome and be supporting the whole team.

West Bromwich Albion FC / Players fighting for the cause
« on: March 21, 2011, 12:03:58 PM »
It seems like our team spirit is now first rate. Brunt climbing out of his sick bed to play, Morrison returning with stitches in his head, Ollie playing through the pain barrier with an injury etc. It's good to see that everyone seems up for the fight, and gives me a lot of optimism for the run in.

Dumbo - likeable but prone to disaster

3167
I think that this year the emphasis has to be staying up. The cups would only have been a distraction imo. I'm a bit disappointed that Blues and West Ham have got knocked out, as it means that they too can concentrate on the league

Too many draws doesn't explain it. There are 11 teams out of 19 who have drawn more than us !!!

West Bromwich Albion FC / A slightly strange statistic
« on: March 09, 2011, 11:11:09 PM »
Just looking at the league table and noticed
We have the 10th best away record
We have the 15th best home record
.............yet we are 16th in the table.

3170
Completely agree - now the big question is why didn't RDM see it? I know that he was injured for a bit, but when he was fit, he should probably have been one of the first names on the team sheet

3171
Hey 63 Brummie - sorry to be nit picking but you started it lol. Here is the internet definition of "buckle down"

Buckle down
Meaning
Apply oneself to hard work.

Origin
This is a US phrase, although it may well be related to an earlier British phrase 'buckle to', which means much the same thing. That dates back to the early 18th century, for example, from John Arbuthnot's story John Bull in The Law is a bottomless pit, 1712:

"'Squire South buckled too, to assist his friend Nic."

'Buckle down' is first cited in the American literary/cultural magazine Atlantic Monthly, 1865:

"If he would only buckle down to serious study."

OK so its a bit American, but I feel that at least part of my literary reputation has been restored !!!!!!!!! :)

West Bromwich Albion FC / Re: Meite - an overlooked option
« on: March 01, 2011, 11:07:03 AM »
Deserves all the plaudits for his performance last night, especially seeing as he is way short of match time. Clearly been keeping himself fit and waiting for his chance. To be fair, the couple of times he has played this season, albeit Carling Cup against lower teams, he has also not let anyone down. Keep it up Meite and well done.

3173
Early days but so far he has
1 Worked out that Reid is a better option than Jara
2 Worked out that Shorey is a better option than Cech
3 Worked out that Dorrans is best in an attacking midfield role
4 Presumably worked out that Cox isnt a midfield player
5 Sorted out the defensive shape
6 Restored the passion and commitment. I thought it was very telling that when we lost a goal last night, not a single head dropped and we just buckled down and redoubled our efforts.
Not bad for 2 weeks work. Keep it up Roy. Keep it up team.

I think some of the comments about tonights performance are a bit unfair. Ok not too much came off for him but I thought his commitment (like everyone elses was very good, he harried, worked hard and tackled. The early season flair has gone somewhat but a much better overall performance than in the last few matches. I really dont understand why we always need a scapegoat. Is this something that happens at every club?

Excellent tonight. Never put a foot wrong, or indeed a head wrong either. If he can keep that level of performance up, about 95% of us are going to have to eat our words big time
