West Bromwich Albion FC / Re: Carlos Corberan

What is difficult to fathom here?

He's managing players after a very energy zapping season.

The players he has aren't very good for what we are paying them and he has no striker worthy of the name.

Yet, he's got you 45 minutes from a po position.

We have no money, spent no money and he's kept us competitive.

Please get some perspective and try and remember what it was like under Bruce ( a seasoned manager with over a thousand games under his very big belt).

It really wasn't that long ago to forget.
Absolutely. He's done exceptionally well in the circumstances. I'm sure the team against Preston will be much stronger and we will at least get the point we need to make the playoffs, which will be a result many if not most of us thought very unlikely at the beginning of the season

That’s part of the problem
The manager has shown time and again who he prefers
Townsend will always start despite being awful
Fellows always has to make way for Wallace/doangana/Phillips regardless of form

A bad day but thankfully for weeks other teams have been throwing it too,.
So you keep saying (ad nauseam). He keeps being picked because he is the best in his position that we have. Simple as that.

My worry is why he’s continually playing four so called wingers at the same point why not just start with two and then play with a proper number eight /ten alongside a proper striker , he can then rotate the wingers  as the game goes on and defenders start to tire
Who do you have in mind?  ;D

Maybe he's rotating the squad so that some of our best players are refreshed and ready for the play offs (or Preston if required). That would be intelligent and good management in my eyes.

Yes, very true. Only Kipre and Diangana are close to Premier League standard.

Palmer, Bartley, Townsend, Johnstone etc are all rubbish. Do you agree?
Well we're not in the Premier League so it's an irrelevant question. And no, none of the players that you have mentioned are "rubbish", they are all decent players in the Championship.

I know they are not. But, and I get no pleasure from saying this, they are a better team than we are.
All of the top 4 are better teams than us. We'll have to play one of them  ;D

I expect Coventry to win so we need the 3 points.
Outside of Clarke we have better players & manager, so if we play well then we will win. The problem is we're stuttering over the line after a long season.
No we're not. Five wins, five draws, and no defeats in the last 10 matches suggests the opposite does it not? Admittedly we haven't always sparkled in a few of these matches but we have got the job done. I haven't actually checked but I suspect there are very few teams in the division who have a better record over the last 10 games.

With the exception of Southampton, I don’t think any team in the top 10 has a striker that has scored more than 15 goals this season.
Ridiculous comment. Are Leeds not in the top 10?
Why did you make your comment about 15 goals, rather than the 12 that would have exceeded the tally of BTA? Because it suited your argument maybe? If you had made your comment in relation to 12 goals (the number that exceeded BTA/s total) the answer would be all but 2 of the other clubs in the top 10 have someone !!

Have to echo the last few comments. Given all the adversity he has had to reckon with, brilliant job by Carlos this season. Whatever happens in the play offs (yes, we will definitely be in them), I hope he hangs around next season to continue the rebuild.

The 3 things that make a CC a top manager for me are;
a) He gets the best out of the players he has available.  You can see clear improvements in the all round ability of certain players since he's been here. e.g. Bartley playing out with the ball to the etxent that he has it in his locker to deliver 30 metre passes. e.g. Phillips who has been alot more consistent than under previous managers.
b) His ability to change things which are not working during matches. Although he often makes changes around the 60 min mark regardless, which will be much to do with the fatigue-freshness factor, as well as tactical reasons, the changes generally seem to bring improvements.
c) He analyses players and opponents in a scientific and detailed way, rather than just gut instinct. Not saying his predecessors never did, you just get the feeling he does it more thoroughly.
Obviously he makes mistakes and he'd probably be the first to admit he's more to learn, but when you look around the possible alternatives, I think we've got one of the best up and coming managers, who's already ahead of many who've been in the game for years.
Spot on mate, couldn't have put it better myself. Top coach, better than any we have had for ages. Very lucky to have him.

Is he off?? I thought he had a 3 year deal
You're right. Maybe won't be off then after all  ;D. Still doesn't change my point though, that he isn't going to be much use this season.

Very close apparently
So is the end of the season, when he'll be off. Given that he will take time to get up to speed, we shouldn't be optimistic that he will be of much use.

I claim the credit for that, I turned off the stream when they got their second and stomped off swearing about overpaid primadonnas, slackers, useless funts etc etc
A gross lack of appreciation on this board sometimes. May I be the first to say a big thank you for rescuing a point for us.  ;D

I’d pay good money to watch the under 2’s. Do they play on a regular sized pitch? :D
Forget it mate. Some of them could barely walk by the end of the match. Come to think of it, some of them could barely walk at the beginning  ;D

40% =105m, which values Ipswich at £260m 🤔, that valuation makes us a bargain for Mr Patel
Note the investment is "up to" £105 million. This could mean anything, but may be (for example) the figure if they get promoted to the Pl and stay there for a couple of seasons.

Book a travel lodge or a premier inn in Preston for after the gig and go to the match the next day. Sorted.  ;D

Blue and white stripes is the clubs identity though. Yellow and green stripes is a 1970's invention.
Yes, but that's well over 50 years the yellow and green has been with us, admittedly with a few gaps. As I said, it's been with us for so long, it's become part of our heritage, so I can see no point in abandoning it now just for the sake of change.

Why? We've had green and yellow stripes for most of the last 5 or 6 seasons.[/b] This seasons away kits have been a breath of fresh air in that respect.
Because it's become part of our heritage now. We've had navy blue and white for even longer - you could get an even bigger breath of fresh air by changing that  :o

Ollie Bostock has been with us since the age of 6 !!!!!!!!

Villa were a bit slow out of the blocks on these two. Both highly rated.

"The shirt is of a different weight", eh Brendan?  Yes, we are a a founder member of the top league in the world and you are one cheek of a second rate a*** that sits on top of a mickey mouse pyramid of part timers.
Harsh !! I'm assuming he's talking about the weight of expectation which I can understand tbh. I don't think he was comparing the status of the 2 clubs, but even if he was, it's undeniable that Celtic are a much bigger club than we are. And yes, there are a lot of part time clubs in the lower leagues, but I'm pretty sure all the clubs in the SPL are full time.

West Bromwich Albion FC / Re: Albion Tackle Crowd Behaviour
« on: March 18, 2024, 09:53:28 AM »
At the start of this season the FA introduced an initiative at grass roots level to deduct points for repeated offences by players and coaches towards officials and opponents. Ie repeated acts of aggression and intimidation etc. They had a sort of watch list of 130 clubs or so from the seventh tier down in the men's game and third tier down in the not men's game.

This was specific to grass roots football as there's a particular problem in this regard at that level. I have no idea whether this applies across competitions (league/cup games) but there is no precedent whatsoever for points deductions in the professional game for crowd disturbances across competitions. None.

We all know about points deductions for financial breaches but if we face sanctions they will be financially based, unless the EFL and FA decide to make things up as they go along of course in which case I'd suggest we'd have a very strong defence dating back to 1871 (FA Cup) and 1880 (foundation of the football league).
What is the definition of a "not man"?  ;D

I agree with both of the last 2 comments. Wallace makes a lot of intelligent runs which have created space for both Johnson and Fellows. BTA makes just as many runs but often not with the same amount of awareness of what is going on around him. Given our current good form, I'm not sure if I would reinstate him as I'd be loathe to drop any of Wallace, Fellows Or Johnston.
