WBA Twitter's latest meltdown is over Jody Morris, because someone put a fiver on him and his odds have dropped!  ;D

Don't know much about him as a coach to be fair

West Bromwich Albion FC / Re: Squad or manager? Or both?
« on: October 19, 2022, 02:47:47 PM »
I think it's too simple to say it's one or the other, so I say both.

There have been a series of really bad decisions mate from top to bottom, we have been stumbling from one crisis to another since Dan Ashworth left.
In order to pick apart what is going wrong in the last few years since Bilic came in, so the "Squad, manager or both" topic, its like the unwinding of a thread - you can't help but trace the bad decisions back a long time before the last few coaches.

For example, Ismael was flawed, but so was the mis-matched squad of players - they have been put together by, what, 5 or 6 previous managers who all wanted to play a different way with different tactics? There has been no consistency at any level for years and years now.

For what its worth, I think the individual players are better than where we sit in the league. I think you could take most of them (bar the older squad members like Jake and Phillips etc) and any team in the league would take them...  For example I think Molumby is a good player if you use him alongside 2 other midfielders (like the 3 CM's who play for Ireland). He might not have the best positional sense or the ability to score and thread passes, but you would ideally play him to his strengths and simply use him as the "legs" in midfield. We're partnering him with either 30something Jake Livermore who can't pass/carry the ball, TGH who I think is brilliant but also lacks the positional side of his game (put it down to inexperience), or Yokuslu who also has limited ability when it comes to passing (and doesn't seem fit). So there is no decent match up for Molumby and he becomes a bit-part/bench player. The same goes for any of the midfielders, I don't see a good match for any of them despite their individual strengths, and the 11 suffer overall for it.

Same goes for Wallace, I think any team in the league takes him and he improves them - as long as he has someone to aim for in the box. I also like BTA, who is clearly willing to put the work in but isn't winning headers against 90% of centre back pairings in the championship. So Wallace is doing his job in beating his man and getting crosses in, so if that's what you're after for your team he'd be a fantastic addition. BTA is doing his job in running channels and getting about, trying to make opportunities. But pair them together? Completely ineffective and a terrible match. It doesn't matter who your coach is, I struggle to see how you get those 2 talented players to work together effectively?

So recruitment has obviously been poor for a long long time. I think the players are okay, but not suited to one another (across the whole pitch) and as a result are underachieving as a unit.

Do I think the managers are poor? Again, it's hard to say yes or no. Again, I think "ill-suited" to our club, which falls at the feet of whoever is hiring them and subsequently not backing them with the time (or money) needed to build an actual project.
- I think Billic is a good coach who shouldn't have been given power in terms of recruitment, I think he would be a good fit with a capable Director of Football/recruitment structure which signs players based on data which fits how Slav wants his team to play.
- I think Ismael is a good coach who was hired at the wrong time. If we weren't going to drastically rebuild the squad and put recruitment in place which backs his vision etc then he's the wrong man for the job. If we wanted someone to simply get the existing players ticking together, then ironically, I think you want a coach like Billic to bring the dressing room together. Ismael wanted revolution, but the board wanted him to work with what he had at his disposal and it didn't work (to be clear, I would have also sacked him when we did, he was the wrong man for what we needed).
- I think Bruce was a panic hire. I would say he is the exception and a clearly poor manager nowadays, he's out of touch. Sure, unlucky in some games, but with whats come out on the Athletic regarding a (to be frank) lack of effort or plan, his performance was indefensible. The "Val project" went wrong, and Gourlay pushed the panic button to revert back to a "tried and trusted" friend. Too far in the other direction.

So to conclude my essay (apologies) - I would say it's a mix of both. I think Val was too extreme one way (unless you're going to back him with 4 transfer windows and funds), and Bruce was too extreme the other way (useless.). I think what we need in the new manager is something in the middle, somebody with a vision who needs backing with a recruitment structure, but not somebody who's vision requires us to move on 8 players then bring in 8 new players to make it work. We are stuck with the majority of (okay but not suited to each other) players that we have for the forseeable, so the change in style needs to be one which can get a tune out of these mis-matches.

Unfortunately, I don't have faith that the next appointment will find the balance to make everything click. Gourlay just isn't the man to sort this.

Exactly, he's still learning his trade, he doesn't need the added burden of the armband.

Yes this was the point I was trying to make - I recognise that there have been solid performances in the past and I hope it's a level he can get to again. But for me, he just hasn't hit any consistently decent form this season.

Imagine being 23 and feeling responsible for dragging this mess of a squad through this horrible patch. It's something I don't think any 23 year old, who is out of form and still learning, to deal with. Equally, how would an older pro feel if they turn around following a goal conceded and see their captain and centre back (in my opinion based on his body language) sinking into themselves and offering no answers?

As someone else has mentioned, this is an international player so no doubt has talent. But for me, he isn't a leader or a captain and it's not fair to expect him to captain this mess as well as concentrate on his own game.

Big Sam won 4 games. You might say the season was already doomed, but it wasn't, 26 matches to keep us up and managed 0.73 Points per game.

Our fans might like him because he dropped Livermore and got a win at the custard bowl, but beyond that I found him totally uninspiring. Completely uninspired profile of manager that we should be avoiding for me. Might as well get Bruce back.

Bit of a concern that Rob Dorset also said that no shortlist was in place yet.

Over a week and sounds like the search hasn't narrowed down at all. Sounds to me like Beale will be in charge at Milwall too

he's not very good is he

Not really.

I'll probably get some pelters for saying this (I get that it's easy to say with hindsight), but he clearly isn't a leader. How he has been made vice-captain baffles me to be honest. It's like a tombstone around his neck! I have never seen him encourage a team-mate, I have never seen him organise the defence or dish out a rollocking...When we concede, he's one of the first to throw his arms in the air in frustration, but there's no accountability or communication.  To me he seems to shrink away from it and is part of the problem at the back.

He's still relatively young and has performed well in the past, so hopefully he can return to some form down the line, but I don't think he is this leader/warrior type whom Bruce claimed will have the armband one day. I haven't seen anything to suggest he should carry on and I think it might be a burden on the young lad - I'd give it to Wallace personally.

"I understand that this is what happens when a team's playing well and getting good results and sitting top of the league and playing in a style that most clubs would like to see their team playing.

"I'm a young coach as well, which is what people are trying to go for at the moment - people who are hungry and ambitious.

Almost seems to me like he’s begging for the opportunity

Exactly how I took this interview as well. He would probably be my first choice.

I understand why people fancy Dyche, because we are in a dog-fight and he seems the man for a dog-fight... but I'm just not convinced at all that appointing Dyche would see any real change in the "cross to the 5'11 league 2 striker" tactical approach to be honest. I fear that if we are too reactive and prepare for a backs-against-the-wall "scrap" so to speak, then we will continue to play this dire kick and hope football. We only threaten when we play on the ground and through the middle, when TGH bursts forward, so I think we need a manager who can see that and has had teams playing through the middle (and on the ground) to some effect previously.

I'm no Dyche expert and would hope that someone who has had as much time/success in management would be capable of adapting their approach to our squad... But surely you could have made that argument about "I've had 1000 games" Bruce, and he seemed utterly unwilling or incapabale (or both) of altering this "5,176 crosses to nobody" approach that we see every weekend. I really worry that Dyche would be the same. Schumacher or Corberan for me.

You want to give Livermore brownie points for playing to the gallery, no thanks. We had five or six years of regular premier league football until we signed him and dropped Yacob. Since then the club has never looked back and not in a good way. Jake does a decent job at this pretend hardman nonsense to mask his lack of ability and poor decision making. I wasn’t keen on Allardyce but he saw straight through it.

Well I guess we both simply perceive his actions differently, he seems like a sincere guy to me whenever I've seen him speak. Without knowing him personally I can't say for sure and equally I don't think you can say for sure that he is "playing to the gallery".

If we're talking about the past then yeah, I wish we still had an in form Yacob in the team. But we're what, 4 or 5 years on from then now? If you disagree that he's a leader and in some good form now then fair enough, but not sure what or Allerdyce's opinion/team selections or dropping Yacob 5 years ago has to do with it.

We are where we are now, I was simply trying to give him some credit for what I see as a spell of good form and some leadership on the pitch.

Worth noting how he talked to others when he got subbed as well. I see people saying there's no leaders in the squad, but make no mistake regardless of how you rate him as a footballer, he is clearly a respected leader in the dressing room.

How many times do you see a sub trudge off and sulk? Livermore was straight over to O'Shea with the armband, geeing him up and encouraging the team as he left. Gets a hard time but some credit where its due, I think he's found form and is doing what he can to encourage those around him to turn things around. Don't think anyone can say he hides when he plays

Now I'm just hoping "Rowatt doesn't fit the template" means we're after someone a bit more ambitious (and not that "the template" = having to pay compensation)

Simon Stone from the BBC has been told Gary Rowatt not in the frame and doesn't fit the profile Gourlay wants.

And breathe.

"Gary Rowett not in line for
@WBA
job am told. Chief exec Ron Gourlay leading extensive recruitment process and Rowett doesn't fit template. Richard Beale in charge for Saturday's game against Reading."

Has anyone actually seen a list? Or had confirmation we're even in for Rowatt?

As far as I can see, Rowatt is putting his name out there and Milwall fans are putting money on him so his odds have changed... But I haven't seen any reputable sources confirm anything at all? The S*n (rag) reported that we were after Rowatt, but if you read the article it doesn't actually confirm whether an approach or enquiry has even been made! There's comments from other journos on that article saying "wide of the mark", so I'm not buying it to be honest.

I don't think anyone at all outside of the club has the faintest idea who we are considering to be honest.

Wouldn't give any weight to the odds but if not Dyche then Rowett would be Gourlays 2nd choice i imagine.

What makes you think Rowatt would be 2nd in line? I feel like I've missed a link somewhere!

According to Chris Lepkovski, Gary Rowett is keen to join us.

Hopefully that's as far as it goes. I fancy a crack at the job myself, doesn't mean I'll get it. Chuck a tenner on me and see how the odds change.

Corberan gives me Ismael vibes. Did well initially with a decent honeymoon period, if you will, before it goes wrong the season after.

It’s cheap, it’s lazy and very West Brom. Welcome Carlos.

Corberan kept Huddersfield up, then got them to the play off final the year after. At Olymiacos, he was fired after 6 games... So what basis is there for saying "decent honeymoon period before it goes wrong the season after"? There literally isn't an example of this happening

Big Dunc Ferguson for me  ;D

A few reasons - Firstly, I have to admit I moved to Liverpool for work a few years ago and all my mates up here are Evertonians... Having attended a few games on the Blue side of the city there is some bias in there for sure.

But I also think he'd fit the criteria of what I want in our new manager. Like most others, I really hope we get a proper coach in who can improve players, in Ferguson's favour you've got examples of players stating that he improved their game (Dominic Calvert Lewin being the best example). He has worked under some great coaches in Ancelotti and Rafa, worked with the Everton youth teams and integrated younger players in his times as interim manager. He left Everton when Lampard was hired because he felt like he deserved a crack at a job as manager, so he certainly has the right attitude and wants to prove himself.

And obviously there is the fact that he wouldn't be afraid to give our lethargic players a kick up the backside when needed. I don't want Roy Keane in but I can't deny I was intruiged by the prospect of him getting into some of our players...

Otherwise, names like Carrick and Rosenior would be at the top of my list.

General Football & Sports / Re: Steve Bruce - Manager
« on: October 10, 2022, 07:45:59 AM »
I'd be concerned if we were 21st in February. I'm more annoyed by the way we transitioned yesterday from trying to play football and win a game to 5-4-1 hoofball nonsense and the terrible individual performance levels of the players who treated the football like a hand grenade. Regardless of the managers tactics or formation the performance levels have been abysmal from many recently and they need a hard look in the mirror.

I agree with the transition from trying to win games to the hoofball, but I would place the blame for that at Bruce's door. As mentioned before in the thread, there is a clear lack of coaching/system. The way we U-turn from weekend to weekend is a real concern to me, it smacks of panic from the manager. Surely there is a middle ground between the shambles of 2 number 10s vs Swansea and the dismal defensive 5-4-1 vs Luton.

Whilst I completely agree that there are (many) players who need to look at themselves in the mirror, I just can't understand what Bruce is trying to achieve weekend after weekend, he seems like a man just rolling the dice and crossing his fingers and I think it tells on the pitch. My main concern, and the reason I'd be considering his position, is that there hasn't been a game this season where you confidently say Bruce has out-thought the opposition - that there have been changes made by the manager that have visibly given us an advantage over the opponent (I'd maybe give you Norwich and Burnley perhaps, but even then we've left 2 games with 2 points). We look like a team that are out-coached, out-thought and out-fought most weeks and over 30 odd games I have seen nothing to suggest that Bruce would be the man to change any of those 3 points.

I thought I was the last Bruce supporter left a few weeks ago. I by no means suggest the players get off scot free because some of them should be ashamed. But I just have no faith that Bruce is the man who can get better performances out of them. I hope I'm wrong because it looks like we're with him for a while longer at least!

Exactly, review results and position at the WC break, sacking the manager mid-season still for me is the option of last resort.

Is being in the relegation zone not last resort? Not having a go, but you must have the patience of a saint!

When they spend the sort of money that they have on players like N'Zonzi and Crouch, with their big wages too, I dont see how even Martinez or Rodgers could change Stoke into a footballing team  withought further serious investment. You just dont see Wilson and Wilkinson putting their foot on the ball or going on a run down the wings regardless of whos in charge

Trouble is that the investment that the board have made has landed them in a catch 22 situation. Do they gamble and spend another fortune on carpet football players and a new manager, or play it safe with Pulis and just survive every year. I think the whole style is getting stale, I know Stoke fans who dread even going on a Saturday at the minute but it takes a brave rich chairman to change it all any time soon

The most annoying part for me is that pundits justify it with this "well there's contact!" myth. Since when did contact warrant cheating?! Even if theres contact,it's either a foul or it isn't. Just because someone's arm is glancing your back doesn't mean you can throw yourself over with your arms in the air like youve been shot!

So glad justice was done but on another day it wont be. Just call it what it is,cheating!

Can really see us struggling to hit 40 points this season can't see where the next win is coming from most would argue it will be Sunderland at home but i just don't see it happening :(

You honestly think we wont manage 6 points in 13 games?? There's no way we'll fail to win another game all season. Of course we'll get 40 points I think some people are going over the top with the doom and gloom here, we're a decent side, I still think we'll finish top 10 which is a good season

And your point being?

We weren't 8th-12th when the run started so its irrelevant. What's getting on the managers back going to do to help us? I don't think he can do much more, I actually think he's the only one who has come out of the last month with any credit at all. He's obviously a top bloke. I think we'll beat Sunderland at home and give a good account of ourselves away at Chelsea.

I don't mean to aim this all at you, but generally speaking what can you do about a player driving himself down to London to try and force a move, or Mulumbu being in Africa, a host of injuries or Popov spitting at someone? It's a matter of time until we turn this around in my opinion and there's no need to get on Clarke's back
