Best away fans at the Hawthorns
« on: December 30, 2015, 09:46:02 AM »
I was thinking at the last match which sets of away fans are the most amusing to have in town.  I nominate Newcastle. Carried the banner for Jeff's campaign last year, even when it's absolutely freezing there are at least a dozen of them with their shirts off (usually the ones with the biggest man boobs), and they do keep on singing...even if I cannot understand a word of what they are actually singing. Other thoughts?

Their home fans might be awful, but I think Man Utd always bring the best and loudest away support.

No chance, Old Trafford may be like that but to be United away you have to basically go to every match. Id say 90% mancs.

The best away fans at the Hawthorns are the one's who leave without any points.

Bearing this in mind (with luck and a fair wind) I hope to be very complimentary towards the 'efforts' of those 'Viler' chappies on January 23rd.

It's been discussed before but as we are talking about away fans no away team comes to the Hawthorns and sits... Unlike when we go away.

No idea how many away games you've been to this season, but so far I've been to five.

Forgive me if I have them in the wrong order but those games were:
Stoke, Aston Villa, Norwich (cup), Crystal Palace and Swansea.

I have only sat down at Norwich in the League Cup, and after a day on the pop and considering what was on display I was actually quite thankful of the seat.

I didn't go to Norwich in the cup (luckily) Seansea last we week everyone sat down except the back couple of rows, United away everyone sat down, Villa was good that's about it. We are known for it unfortunately.

I've been to 5 away only Liverpool did the stewards make you sit down. They were saying the fans at the back couldn't see, maybe it's more to do with the roof blocking the view !

At our place have to agree Man Utd are the best support

I didn't go to Norwich in the cup (luckily) 1. Seansea last we week everyone sat down except the back couple of rows, United away everyone sat down, Villa was good that's about it. 2. We are known for it unfortunately.

1. I was sat six rows from the back
(Ed: STOOD six rows from the back and there were others standing in front of me and my son too)

2. Known for it?
Really?
By whom?
Do you really think that other club's supporters give a toss whether you and those near you sit down?
Paranoid!?!
 :P :P.

Some people don't wish to stand for whatever reason and that's fine by me.
I try to book towards the back where like minded people tend to gather.

If you don't like the area's where you have been 'sitting', book your tickets so that you are situated towards the back.
Otherwise just focus on enjoying your day from the area's where you have inadvertently 'chosen' not to stand  :)  ;).

Whatever happens, do it with a smile  :).

Our away support is no where near as good as it was 10 years ago. It's dwindled massively in my opinion

Absolutely agree.

Is this due to the novelty wearing off?

Disollusionment/boredom/other options of what to do with our time kicking in?

The general cost of living?

The ridiculous circumstance where away clubs are charged for unsold tickets, meaning that our club will not even so much as risk taking a hit?

Supporters fed up of feeling they are being taken for granted?

Not wishing to upset others by standing  :o ;)?

All of the above and more?

I'd suggest style of play ( ;)) but not selling out is not a new phenomenon  :).

I think economics play a big part, and not just for away matches.  When the recession hit back in 2008/9 it was notable that attendance fell sharply and even now, we very rarely sell out for a home match.  Notable numbers of seats in the Woodman Corner are regularly vacant.  I watched the two Norwich away matches this year.  One was awful (league cup), the other we were actually good.  Would have loved to have got to the Liverpool match this year where again we did well.

Not sure I agree with the boring tag personally, we should be making ourselves difficult to beat away from home and I would not criticise Pulis for doing this.

I recall a number of times when we have sung where were you when you were cr*p to the Citeh supporters, to which they routinely sing "we were here"- to be honest they were.

I think it's economics allied to general boredom at the over hyped nature of the game, with a mixture of odd kick off times and awkward travel arrangements thrown in.

Not to mention the nauseum of not being able to pay on the gate at many games and still get a decent view now we are obliged to 'situate' ourselves to a designated spot.

Too much planning required to support the team these days and not enough spontaneity.  Not taking up our full allocation doesn't help in this regard either.

Would have loved to see the Norwich game but could not commit until virtually on the day itself and that would have been some jaunt for potentially nothing.

Couldn't commit to Liverpool until late either, and didn't want to know once I had seen the prices and became aware of the restricted view seating for the remaining tickets.

Fair point, sorry for expanding the topic.
Won't happen from me again today.

What is your view regarding the best away supporters at the Hawthorns Brian?
Had a quick look but I couldn't find your opinion regarding the threads purpose.

I am an old guy who finds it very difficult to stand up for 90 minutes, and I gave up going away when I was abused and threatened by my own clubs supporters for asking them if they would please sit down so I could watch the game. These people then called three of their mates from other areas to stand by them, meaning I then had nowhere to sit as six people were taking up three seats space. As I had had difficulty seeing at other games and couldn't get a seat at the front I decided enough was enough and called time on away trips.

Sorry to hear that Oldbaggie.
Unfortunately even we have yobbos.
I am sure that you can remember standing on the terraces in the 60's, both home and away.
Fans intermingling with banter and no-one really taking offence.
I can, even remember a couple of Liverpoo fans in the Brummie Road (FA cup 1968)...We went and had a drink after in Brum...Met up again at the replay and stood in the Kop. (Didn't see them at Maine Road though)
What happened to change it all?
