West Bromwich Albion FC / Chris L. talks to RDM in Mail article

Just noticed this one on news now. Thought I'd share it.

ROBERTO Di Matteo insists that he would have kept West Brom in the Premier League last season - as he prepares for his first return to The Hawthorns.

The Italian, who is currently Chelsea’s assistant boss, was dismissed by Albion last February following a run of just three wins in his final 16 games.

Albion’s decision prompted consternation from outside of the West Midlands, not least as the club were 16th in the table at the time.

The Baggies replaced Di Matteo with Roy Hodgson and finished the season in mid-table.

But the 41-year-old feels that he would have transformed Albion’s fortunes had Jeremy Peace and the club’s board kept faith in him.

Di Matteo had taken Albion up in his first season in charge - with a record number of points (91) - before guiding them to memorable wins at Arsenal and Everton last term.

Even so, he has good memories of his time at B71 and is looking forward to seeing ‘old friends’ this Saturday.

“I had two very good and happy seasons at the club and I still regard myself as a friend of West Bromwich Albion,” Di Matteo told the Birmingham Mail.

“I still have many friends there and felt very close to the club and those who work there - it was a good relationship overall.

My family moved up to Warwickshire and I bought into what the club wanted to do.

“Promotion was expected of us.

“The team had come down with some good players, we strengthened the squad and it would have been a bigger surprise had we failed to go up that year. Our target was promotion and it was achieved.

“Last season, I always felt that we would stay up.

"I never felt that we weren't going to survive. We were on course for it.

"I was always confident, but that’s football.

“So, yes, I was very shocked when I found out I was no longer wanted.

“I had a very good and close relationship with so many of my players.

“Clubs make decision and you have to take these things philosophically.

“I look back on my time at West Brom as a very successful part of my professional life and I always look for their results and keep an eye on their progress.

“I feel I left the club in a better shape to when I joined.

“Personally the experience improved me as a man and as a coach.”

When asked about Jeremy Peace, Di Matteo added: “I’ve spoken to the chairman since then.

“There is no bad feeling. These decisions are made. You don’t always agree with them but you move on as people.

“Roy Hodgson is a very good manager and a good man. He has moved the club on.”

ALBION'S five-star Black Country derby win at Wolves on Sunday has scooped the F&C Thames River Performance of the Week Award.

The League Managers Association five-man Performance of the Week panel, comprising LMA Chairman Howard Wilkinson, Sir Alex Ferguson, Joe Royle, Dave Bassett and Barry Fry, were in agreement the accolade should this week go to the Baggies for their sensational 5-1 win at Molineux.

Hawthorns boss Roy Hodgson will receive a specially engraved crystal football in a presentation to be screened on Sky Soccer Saturday this weekend.

The victory came courtesy of a four-goal second-half display following the hammer blow of an undeserved Steven Fletcher equaliser for Wanderers on the stroke of half-time.

Peter Odemwingie fired his first Barclays Premier League hat-trick and goals from Jonas Olsson and debutant Keith Andrews completed the rout.

After the match, Hodgson said: "It's certainly up there with the best performances we've had while I've been here.

"There have been some good ones during that time.

"We've put a few bad records, which have seemed to dog us for years and years, to bed - like the wins at Villa and Stoke.

"There have been lots of good occasions but it was good to win in an important derby game.

"It was also good to play well.

"Their goalkeeper, Wayne Hennessey, was probably an outstanding Wolves player, which says everything about our performance."
