Albion players before your time you wish you had seen.
« on: June 10, 2015, 05:16:09 PM »
My Grandad used to go in the twenties and thirties, and he always said WG Richardson was better than Astle and Allen, so i would have loved to have seen him play.

I did see Allen and Barlow play but was too young to remember.

Who do you wish you had seen in the stripes?

Ted Sandford, he told me some stories about when he was a player in the 30's when he had his café on The Birmingham Road.

Cunningham looked like a player.... was years before his time.

Osbourne for his antics with the brolly and cigarette

Willie Johnston- again another fast tricky wideman

Bomber - because he's a legend.

In fact, pretty much the who team under Atkinson's first reign

Astle, Bomber and Cunningham.

To be honest, I would do anything to go back in time and watch one game from the 1978 season.

I saw Laurie Cunningham once in the 70's when my Uncle Cyrille took me to The Shrine for the first time. Sadly I was too young to appreciate him. But I'm glad Cyrille did. He moved to Austrailia from Smethwick soon after, leaving me the only Baggie in the Family. Sadly passing a few years back, I'd hope Cyrille would be proud of what we are Today. Forgive an old fool reminicsing about his family but both are linked for me and I miss them both and I'll always remember them fondly

same here, best season ever for me and only lost 7 matches all season and only four of those away from home. just the uefa cup night matches alone were fantastic and not forgetting the thrashing of man utd away.

Billy Bassett weaving his magic v Preston in the cup final.
John "Baldy" Reynolds because he had a great name
WG Richardson - Goal scoring legend
The 1954 team that just missed out on the double. They were something special.

I'm kidding I did see him play, 1996 was my first season and my first Albion hero was Alan Miller. I was a goalie at the time for my under 7s team and loved him. Apparently when I was a kid Paul Crichton spoke to me at some Albion event and gave me goalkeeping tips. I moved to centre half not long after!

I'd love to have seen the usual legends spoken about here as that's a given, but if I could pick someone JUST out of my reach it'd be Ally Robertson purely because I'm named after him

Wee Willie and Cunningham - i love wingers and I would love to have seen them play.

Bobby Hope - my dad (sadly departed) even as a Wolf supporter used to go to the Albion to watch Bobby Hope because he loved his passing so much and always said he was the bext passer of the ball he ever saw and he was brought up on the very successful Wolves teams....
Nice one Cyrille, nice one son

Ray Barlow had a Brunt-like left foot but was a much better all round player. I had a friend, sadly no longer with us, who watched the great Blackpool side of the 1950s, with players like Matthews, Mudie and Mortensen. He reckoned Ray Barlow was the best midfielder of his generation by a country mile.

Heard it all now, Crichton giving goalkeeping tips its no wonder Blackpool got relegated he's their goalkeeping coach.
Ally was a mean tight fisted jock, when I was young we used to do penny for the guy outside The Four In Hand pub where all the Albion players drank, they all gave generously except Ally, he threw our Guy Fawke on the roof.
