It's a sad reflection of our academy that we have had no one good enough to step up to the first team for ages now in the striker role.

We have definitely got to find a goalscorer from somewhere. It is an acid test for our  recruitment department.

He’s a massive loss - he really is. The gulf in quality between Maja and Cole is enormous.

The player we least want to lose. We absolutely don't have anything close to a like for like replacement not just in terms of quality but the type of player he is. It requires a complete restructuring of the team just to get some of the attributes that he brings onto the pitch and ultimately no matter what we lose his goal scoring ability.

I don't want be overly gloomy but I fear that our play-off challenge will be over before we get him back on the pitch. This would be a tricky issue for any coach to address but even tougher for a guy just walking into the building or the relative rookies in the interim team.

It’s such a huge blow, it’s like like the third punch in a three punch combo and now the club need to come out swinging. We need a manager statement and to do something to replace the goals because it ain’t Cole and Grant won’t replace the link up play.

Like he Standaman says, we need a total restructure as what we’ve lost now through the middle is massive. An in-form Swift could replace some of his play around the middle of the pitch but he is incredibly out of form.

Maja being out raises a lot of questions. Tough gig for whoever comes in now.

I've liked Patel so far but I think he dropped the ball in the summer.

Maja was proven last season to be a little injury prone, so the reality of him doing Asante's roll as lone striker wasn't as realistic as Asante doing it. Yes, Maja is better in almost everyday, but he's clearly not as durable for a full season.

This begs the question why we bought in Cole who was clearly not good enough. We should have kept Weimann as the sub or even got in a similar Championship striker as opposed to Cole. It turns out Dike is also too injury prone, Wallace has fell off the pace and moving Grant there takes him away from his main position. It's not ideal.

Question 1. Let’s write off Maja now?
Question2. Can we sell him injured, with a specialist doctors report?
Question 3. Sell him for 15/20 million?

This would make sense to me but, would this sale clear our debt?
If so sell him.

This was the window where we had a chance of getting a good fee for him. He's injured now so that's not going to happen. He'll get fit again eventually and then leave on a free in the not too distant future. No chance anyone's going to give us £15 million for an injured player who in relative terms has not long come back from a long lay-off.

It's just not going to happen.

I know this will probably seem like a stupid question which I'm already regretting asking,  but you do realise Andy Weimann is an attacking midfielder and not a direct replacement for either Maja or Asante (who isn't a centre forward) any more than League One Devante Cole is don't you? Or maybe not.

Unfortunately, at the moment, he's unsaleable. A scenario we could've done without.

Yeah, I understand that. My point is, we effectively traded him for Cole this summer (presumably to save on wages) and it looks like Cole is surplus to requirements which may lead to a potential January emergency purchase/loan. Whereas I think it would have been better to keep Weimann as a replacement (even though it's not a direct replacement he would have been more useful off the bench as an option compared to Cole). As I also said, I'm sure there were similar veteran Championship strikers who could also have been used better than Cole who were available too.

Praise be  ;D ! I only say that as it seems not everyone does. That said he's played more as a goal poaching type front man for Blackburn due to their needs this season which does tie in with your response.

I've mentioned this previously (it's lost in my posting history somewhere) but I was told he'd had a pretty big fallout with Carlos over a lack of playing time a few weeks before the end of last season, hence why he wasn't involved at the back end.

Haha, well I never knew that about his fallout so it makes sense. I would potentially look at the Swedish league again though regarding new strikers due to Heggem doing so well. I believe Cardiff are signing a young striker from there. Anyway, whatever way you look at it, it's not good to see Maja injured.

Any one know what exactly this 'lower leg' injury is that requires surgery?
Hard to think of an injury between knee and ankle that requires surgery other than a proper old fashioned broken leg (Tibia and/or Fibula) or hamstring both of which would be a season ending injury I would guess

Could be some sort of cartilage thing? Or something to do with an attachment point between a tendon and bone?
