Does anyone know when we started called them dingles ?  The dingles appeared in Emmerdale in the mid 90's, I'm pretty sure we spotted the likeness straight away and its been in use since then.  A Dingle mate of mine suggests we stole the term from Blackburn, who call Burnley fans Dingles ... I think more likely both clubs saw the likeness in their less developed neighbours as soon as Zak appeared in the Woolpack and began using it independently, rather than one copying the other.

Also, they have a riposte to being called a dingle which goes 'i'd rather be a dingle than a ****'; to my mind the two are not mutually exclusive , and in fact many dingles are also ****s simultaneously

Yep, remember some of the unclean chanting that on the metro a few years ago and weren't too pleased when we responded with "you're both!" after.

Indeed taken from Emmerdale to mean inbred. The Lancastrians adopted it also, no copying each other to my knowledge just the TV programme.

As I recall we started to call them "Dingles" in retaliation to them calling us "Bennies" after Benny in Crossroads

Other way around from my memory.

Strangely enough when I was at primary school in the 70's we used to call Blue Noses Bennies, as did a couple of Vilers.

Ed: further to the above I was referring to the sequence of accusation and counter accusation, not that the Dingle family in Emmerdale came before Benny in Crossroads.

Similarly the Addams family came before both programmes but I think our song for them may have started last out of the three.

Confusing myself a bit now so I'll leave it there.

It doesn't matter how many resources you have.
If you don't know how to use them, they will never be enough.
Oh, and always remember to defecate on those Vile chaps in claret and spew.

The best part is Don Goodman's commentary.

" Yet another deflection how unlucky is that " Every time we scored

When Wolves scored "Wonderful Goal!"

Both our clubs aspiring to mid table mediocrity I see.

I don't half the players who play for the dingles these days.

Agreed, it just looks like kids and players from the lower leagues, shows how they've fallen from just 3 seasons back, love it.

I must admit I get fed up when I see Dingles win a couple and look like they might make a play off position.
But then they screw up again and it makes me smile inwardly, Even more so when I think how the inverse is true for the knuckle draggers that follow them.

As often said its the hope (however small that kills you, so them hoping for anything and not getting it however small is great in my book.
