West Bromwich Albion FC / Josh Griffiths
« on: February 04, 2023, 07:29:45 PM »
Not sure why he was brought back from playing weekly and getting invaluable experience. With Palmer out I would give him a chance as the number 1 to see what he is all about, otherwise pointless bringing him back.

West Bromwich Albion FC / Favourite West Brom Shirt
« on: April 21, 2022, 08:25:41 PM »
Whats your favourite West Brom shirt. My top three would probably be the 3. Cyan away from a couple of years back (I know its strange but there is just something about it for me) 2. 1984 Home and 1. 78/79 Home. Just a bit of fun really.

Really enjoying the content so far, the docu-series, classic matches and full match replays are a genuine benefit. Anyway just about to watch the 20 years on from the first PL promotion.

West Bromwich Albion FC / So Happy
« on: May 09, 2021, 09:14:31 PM »
Didn't want to go up (I realise financially we needed to), hated being in this bent league and desperately wanted to get out of this disease of a league so I am over the moon tonight.

Looking forward massively to next season with the return of us fans and a level playing field  :D

Breakaway looks nailed on now, good or bad for us?

West Bromwich Albion FC / Diagne & Okay
« on: February 20, 2021, 08:03:07 PM »
I dont think they will be interested in playing in the Champ but if there was a slight chance we have to throw the kitchen sink at it. Apart from Bartley I would get rid of all the others who their contract expires in the summer to free up wages for them.

Also I would be willing to sell most of our fringe players if possible to get the money for the transfer fees, they would absolutely boss the championship and along with Bartley would give us a proper spine that we have been missing for many years.

As I said I dont think they would be interested but we should throw everything at them to make it happen.

West Bromwich Albion FC / Bit Of Help
« on: May 01, 2020, 09:34:07 PM »
My little man is really getting into his football and everything is all about the Baggies. I am trying to get him a new shirt for his birthday as his current one is nearly worn to death. The official site and clubshop are sold out and I need a bit of help tracking one down, does anyone know of anywhere reliable that I might be able to get one from.

Thanks in advance!

Admin/Mods please feel free to delete or move if not suitable.

West Bromwich Albion FC / Jan 2020 Transfer Window
« on: January 31, 2020, 11:30:07 PM »
I think for a window that usually provides little we have done fairly well. Diangana extending is great, Grosicki is a brilliant player at this level and at a great price. Peltier as well is a very astute piece of business who is great at this level, a leader and cost nothing. Robinson also add to our attacking threat in all forward areas.

The obvious downside is the Ferguson deal breaking down as this will cost us lost transfer fees as well as us having a potential problem player after the breakdown of the move.

I think in general a good but not great window.

West Bromwich Albion FC / Pre Season Positives
« on: July 26, 2019, 10:05:57 PM »
From what I have seen there are positives that we can work on. Dara looks to me like he can make the step up, Leko looks more intelligent, Furlong looks decent, Semi is raw but promising, Kricko is obvious quality and if Field cant get a game I give up

West Bromwich Albion FC / Judging New Loan Signings
« on: February 14, 2019, 11:48:38 PM »
My initial opinion was that all would benefit the squad and I still believe they will. None of them have been great but they are very very clearly not match fit and I think it is unfair to judge them until they are 100% match fit.

More worringly why are they being played when unfit? My Forest mate asked why is he playing Johansen and Murphy when they were both blowing after 20 mins?

I think they will improve especially Johansen but dont hang them out to dry.

West Bromwich Albion FC / Keeping Unhappy Players
« on: August 06, 2018, 10:01:06 AM »
I hope that we have learnt our lesson and decided that turning down bids and keeping unhappy players does not work for the club. I want Nyom, Dawson, Hegazy, Gibbs, Barry, Rodriguez and Rondon gone asap as they will make this group rotten to the core if they stay.

The club have replacements lined up who actually want to play for the club so get it done and stop bickering over small margins on prices and loan fees.

Rant over!!

West Bromwich Albion FC / Crop Of Youngsters 2018
« on: July 15, 2018, 08:42:29 PM »
It seems that the promising youth teams we have are starting to supply players that can challenge for squad places or better.

The obvious ones are the likes of Field, Harper and Leko but it seems now that we have a good crop coming through behind them as well.

Palmer, Wilkins, Melbourne, Fitzwater, Tulloch, Edwards, Jameson, Dyce all look capable and could possibly feature at some point if needed. I have probably missed a few but you get the idea.

It just makes me feel positive that the academy is proving its worth and working well.

West Bromwich Albion FC / West Bromwich Albion Soccer Towns
« on: July 03, 2017, 04:38:07 PM »
I feel this has gone under the radar a bit but this could potentially be one of the most important decisions the club have made. If just a small percentage of fans decided to follow us because of this initiative due to the sheer number of people in China our support base and commercial opportunities could be dramatically improved.

Another good move by the owners I feel.

ALBION have strengthened their links with China with news of two ground-breaking ventures for the Club.

The Baggies have signed one of the nation's brightest young football prospects, Yuning Zhang, in a "development project" that they hope could one day see him make a Premier League breakthrough.

This follows confirmation from Palm, the Club's principal sponsors and the company closely associated with controlling shareholder Guochuan Lai, of the new phase of their Eco town building plan which will see as many as six new centres developed in the Club's name.

Both ventures will continue the growth of Albion's profile in one of world football's boom markets – something the Baggies will discover for themselves when they compete in the Premier League Asia Trophy in Hong Kong later this month.

Albion fans will have to be patient to see Zhang in action for the Club as he has been immediately loaned to Bundesliga outfit Werder Bremen to continue his development.

But this news follows confirmation of Palm's plans to construct new "football towns" bearing the Club's name across China.

Albion's Academy expertise will be a key feature of the projects which will be undertaken by the Palm Eco-Town Development Company.

Li Piyue, Gouchuan Lai's representative on Albion's board, said: "When we announced the change of ownership last year, this was clearly stated as a key part of our business strategy.

"We have made it clear from the outset that the growth of Albion's and Palm's profile in this area would reap mutual benefits and that is still our intention."

The first of the "West Bromwich Albion Soccer Towns" will be built in the south west of China in the city of Guiyang, which is the capital of the Zhou province.

Albion Chairman John Williams welcomed the news saying: “We’re now beginning to see Palm’s strategy for the Club emerge through their expertise and knowledge of the market in China.

“While the board of the Club remains firmly focused on achieving success on the pitch, it is very encouraging to see the development of our profile in China as Guochuan Lai envisaged from the outset.”

Zhang's signing is subject to international clearance.

West Bromwich Albion FC / Definate Backbone Staters
« on: October 15, 2016, 10:37:36 PM »
Who is our backbone currently and going forward?

I would say the essential players are:

Foster
Evans
Dawson
Yacob
Chadli
Rondon

Not a bad spine but could do with some improving around them.

What a refreshing difference from a young player and also a potential new fan base if things go well.

West Bromwich Albion FC / Too many right wingers?
« on: August 21, 2015, 07:09:55 PM »
We already have Macca, Gnabry, Gardner and Morrison who can play there, why do we need another RW in Phillips when we could be spending it on an attacking midfielder or full backs? We need other positions strengthening before overloading with right wingers.

West Bromwich Albion FC / Your Favourite Ever Season

What is your personal favourite ever season?

It has to be the first promotion to the Premiership for me, it was just full of unforgettable moments. Forest, Sheffield United, Bradford & Palace to name but a few!

Also the '93 Ozzie Season was amazing for me.

West Bromwich Albion FC / VVV Venlo
« on: March 09, 2015, 07:45:19 PM »
I was not aware of this:

http://www.birminghammail.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/west-brom-blog-unlikely-friendship-8805548

They’re a second tier club from the South-Eastern province of Limburg in the Netherlands, 356 miles away from West Bromwich , so what has VVV Venlo got to do with the Baggies?

It’s the pre-season tour in the summer of 2010 and Albion are preparing for their first season back in the big time.

It was a summer where we fans decided that we were going to finally establish ourselves as a Premier League side under the stewardship of Roberto Di Matteo.

And after a resounding 3-0 win at Aggborough over Kidderminster Harriers, the Italian’s team were off for a training camp in the Netherlands to get ready for the upcoming season.

Whilst in the Netherlands, West Brom had a pre-season fixture against the then top-flight side VVV Venlo at the De Koel stadium.

VVV Venlo were founded in 1903, and are one of the oldest clubs in the Netherlands.

They are known as the Good Old or Pride of the South to their supporters who watch their team at De Koel stadium, an 8,000 capacity stadium which is also known as the Seacon Stadium.

Around 400 Baggies fans made their way to De Koel in anticipation of getting to see more of the attractive football Di Matteo had them drooling over the season before.

However, what they got out of the trip was much more than seeing their team win.

West Bromwich Albion Fans . West Bromwich Albion fans: tend to have a good away following during pre-season

Albion won the game 2-1, Ishmael Miller opening the scoring and new signing Gabriel Tamas got his first goal for the club, but what was more fascinating than the result is the bond that was created between both sets of supporters during the game.

Di Matteo even pointed out that it was a great occasion for everyone who had made it to the game and praised the travelling supporters for their behaviour: “The fans have been unbelievable today. There was so many here it felt like we were back home,” he said.

“I think the beer helped them enjoy the occasion. I’m sure the bars inside the ground had a high turnover,” he added.

After many drinks, plus some routine photos and singing, the Dutch and the Englishmen swapped contact details and Albion fans invited their hosts to come to watch West Brom at the Hawthorns.

To this day Venlo supporters make the 712 mile round trip to cheer on the Baggies.

They also bring banners to their home games sporting the blue and white stripes and ‘WBA’ graffiti can be found around the Dutch city.

Daniel van den Berg, who runs a Venlo supporters site, thinks that the culture of football in both England and the Netherlands is key to the friendship: “The club cultures from VVV and WBA are very similar and that is why, I think, the friendship is very close,” he said.

It will be five years this summer since the friendly and van den Berg would like to see the two sides commemorate that anniversary: “All of the VVV fans hope that there will be a friendly in the future.

“Actually last summer we hoped that they arranged it, but West Brom went to the USA to have a campaign abroad. We hope that it can be arranged next summer for the fifth anniversary,” he said.

Later that season a group of Venlo supporters came to watch the Black Country derby at the Hawthorns to see Roy Hodgson’s first game in charge and they weren’t disappointed thanks to loan-signing Carlos Vela scoring a late equaliser to silence the away support.

And yes, they did ‘boing boing’.

Carlos Vela Carlos Vela celebrating THAT Black Country Derby goal

After that game Albion only went on to lose two more games that season and achieve their then-highest finish in the Premier League in 11th place and, well, you know the rest.

However Venlo suffered a different fate and that season the Good Old diced with relegation, but ultimately earned survival in the Eredivisie by winning the relegation play-off.

They were, however, eventually relegated back to the second tier of the Dutch league pyramid, known as the Jupiler League, in 2013 after losing a relegation play-off to Go Ahead Eagles.

Albion and VVV fans continued to visit each other’s games.

Most recently the supporters of Venlo witnessed Craig Gardner’s winning goal against Aston Villa in December.

As well as the similarities of English and Dutch football, Van den Berg also spoke of the differences: “The atmosphere is very good over there, especially in derbies, and it’s a beautiful stadium [The Hawthorns].

West Bromwich Albion's Craig Gardner scores against Aston Villa West Bromwich Albion's Craig Gardner scores against Aston Villa

“The only thing that they didn’t like is the fact there aren’t any grandstands where you can stand, there are only seats.

“Also in matches you cannot drink a pint! In our stadium you can stand where ever you like and drink a couple of beers if you want,” he added.

He also managed to get the club the play the Liquidator before home games at De Koel, something which is starting to creep back in to the Hawthorns every week.

Collaborations between two sets of supporters aren’t uncommon in the Netherlands, as well as other European countries.

Juventus and ADO Den Haag fans share a similar friendship.

Supporters of Polish club Legia Warsaw and Belgian fans of Club Brugge do too, but these alliances aren’t publicised too often, which is why I only found out about this last week and I presume that most of you are finding this out just now.

It’s a great thing when two sets of fans come together in unity for their love of football.

The closest thing we have to it here in England is when there’s a mutual hate towards rival clubs, but even then there’s still rivalry during games and all friendship and allegiances go out of the window.

Personally, I’ll always be looking out for the VVV results from now on, hoping they make their way back into the top flight of the Eredivisie and establish themselves as a top club, just like when we began in 2010.

Chairman addresses fans
JEREMY Peace today issues a New Year message to all Albion fans with the promise: "We are going back to basics."

The Albion Chairman, speaking before the appointment of new head coach Tony Pulis, makes it clear the club is determined to get the fundamentals right once more to get the Baggies back on an upward curve.

In a strident address delivered in today's Albion News, Peace lays out his immediate aims with a simple but robust message while expressing his annoyance at an unfair perception of the club's working structure.

He tells fans: "It has been a poor couple of years and we should not hide from that criticism. Five wins from the last 33 home league games since March 2013 tells its own story. That is simply not good enough and will have tried the patience of all our fans – I get that and offer a genuine ‘thank you’ for your continued backing."

He continues: "To change that path, we have to go back to basics with a Head Coach who possesses a proven track record, someone to keep us in the Premier League and build again for the future. He will inherit a well-coached, well-organised team but I hope bring with him the ability to compete more successfully in and around those extremely fine margins.

"We are reviewing and will be streamlining our recruitment department because we know we simply have not done well enough in this area. That has to improve. Most importantly, the new Head Coach will inherit a club with its structures in place, robust and unchanged. Let me make that clear – there is a perpetual irritation within the club about how its mode of operation is continually misrepresented and mis-interpreted across the media."
