Worst thugs/ dirtty teams you have seen.
« on: February 02, 2018, 01:37:40 PM »
This has come to mind because of the pathetic bunch at Man City who have never seen a real tackle.
No doubt football has got softer with the passage of time, the worst display i ever saw was Red Star against Cyrille and co we all felt sick when they knocked us out but the manner in which we lost left a bitter taste.
Over the years the worst side consistently has to be Stoke who had a team who played football for about two years in the 70s.
We all know the names from the 70s Chopper Harris , bite yeah legs Hunter every team had a minder so who do you remember?

Tommy Smith, Jim Holton (more so when he was at Man Utd) Ally Robertson, although not a dirty player loved a hard tackle.

The thing is when the above were all playing you could tackle from behind, go through players etc as long as you played the ball.

Watch footage of the Uruguay v Holland match or even the Brazil v Holland semi-final to see some brutality (both from the 74 World Cup).

They seemed well capable of dishing it out. Just not quite as spectacular as Phillips effort but just as dangerous. Two players went off due to City tackles and one due to a West Brom one.
When I started following footie; Vinnie Jones would have been the number one thug; although I think it was enhanced by his desire to accept that image. Had a VHS of his dirty football players too.

:D Vinnie Jones. Your confusing hard with stupid.
Hard players were Johnny Giles, Billy Bremner, Norman (bites yeah leg) Hunter Graham Souness, Jimmy Case, Tommy Smith, Ron Harris, Terry Payne etc etc.
This lot that play now couldn't even spell hard

I'd have to go with Don Revies leeds Utd

Paul Reaney in particular but ably assisted by
Terry Yorath / Johnny Giles / Billy Bremner / Jack Charlton / Norman Hunter / Peter Lorimer / Paul Madeley  - Horrible Horrible team!

Beat me to it! I think fans of all other teams hated that Leeds team; Horrible Horrible team! is bang on and vile horrible supporters to go with them. Still hate them today and always glad to see them lose.
(Still we did get Johnny Giles from them and we do have an awful lot to thank him for!)

For me the worst thug was Kevin Muscat of the dingles. Lots of sly off the ball incidents leading to him clutching his face in feigned injury and his victim getting punished. Nasty slimy barsteward.

Surprise, surprise - his profile says he lives in London  ???

I'd add Michael Brown to the mix - often went under the radar because he was never a high profile player, but he always had some nasty tackles in him. Surprising to think that he managed to play 50 times for Spurs too, shows how times have changed.

'Starred' for Sheffield United during the Battle of Bramall Lane too  ;) .

Yeah, that is the single worst challenge I have ever seen. Absolutely disgraceful.

Ever I agree that overall Kevin Muscat was the dirtiest.
