My mom and dad gave up their season tickets after 20 years after the whole carry on with business loans, mis-management etc. It also doesn't help that we keep playing midweek, late or all the changed dates we had for TV when my dad needed to get up at 6 the next day for work and they live a fair bit away from the ground. 7:45 games were ok as they could be home for 10:30ish.
For many the cost just isn't justified, it's a rubbish product at times and the cost of a full day out (home or away) whether you're frugal or not is costing upward of £30, for those who like a beer, a bit of food, maybe are catching the train it starts adding up to be an expensive day. I'm not in that camp by the way, i live 200 miles away and Pulis killed my travelling to the ground off unless I'm in Brum for the weekend.
For £30 if i had a choice I'd go and see a band these days, if you'd have asked me 10 years ago i would say football every time, when you break the cycle of not going to games it's easy to stay out of it as well, i had a season ticket from about the age of 8 until i was 28, if i wasn't at the game (away, i didn't miss home games) i would be all consumed by the game on my phone, the radio or dodgy stream, i would have that game day anxiety from the minute i woke up and it would ruin my day if we lost, these days i just check the score after the game when i remember and it doesn't affect me mentally if we lose, it's a nice place to be.
Knowing some people who were hardcore footie fans in the 70's and 80's who stopped going late 90's having kids, the cost, the time it takes out of your weekend (households and men/ women balance in the relationship seems to be a big factor as well, get misses, misses only sees you at the weekend, if you're out at an away game or out all day at the footie once a wee k it doesn't tend to work) the seating and the death of atmosphere killed it for a lot as well.
If you've made it this far well done.
We also have been serving a rubbish product up, we don't have the draw the big clubs do, Liverpool will sell out because demand is higher than supply and the product is still good, United don't always sell out now as their product isn't what it was. You can say the same around London, but they have the added advantage of tourist support.
