We always make too many changes for these games. I want to see Josh Griffiths. Hopefully Dike if he hasn't already figures and Pipa and Fellows from the start. Otherwise we should took play our full strength side and go for the cup. Our 2 best promotion campaigns megson and Mowbray we had great cup runs.

The club doesn't care anymore. From the moment Di Matteo played the second 11 in a League Cup quarter final at Ipswich, that's been clear to every Albion fan.

It's shameful for a club with our history in the cups to not have reached a final in so long. Not reached a semi-final in 15 years.

That will continue this year. The cups just get in the way of trying to stuff our snouts in the Premier League trough.

I think with the game being moved to 2:00 and on a Sunday they have got the ticket pricing all wrong … for a start why because I am over 40 do I have to pay more than someone in their 20s … prob because of the above I’ll give it a miss

Club has announced that they have given Aldershot the entire Smethwick end so should get over 10k attendance if they are up for it, which i guess they will be.

Me and the Mrs will be in Block F2 of the East Stand. The real pain was buying two tickets together before season ticket seats are freed up on December 28th. Still, it's all extra cash for the club and balance sheet.

For those believing in omens, there are a worrying few similarities between Aldershot and Woking. Both are medium sized towns on the Hampshire Surrey border, and being just 12 miles apart, are one anothers closest footballing neighbours.  It also appears that Woking on that inglorious day in 1991 were at a similar level of the football pyramid (Isthmian League Premier!)  as Aldershot are now, whilst we were then at second tier level as we are now. Surely history couldn't repeat itself, could it?  :o

Good morning Alex. Proper little ray of sunshine to brighten a damp morning you aren't ya? Feeling fully invigorated for the challenges the day ahead brings now. Cheers for that...... but just so you're aware I can only take so much positivity in one go  8) .

Coming from a village bang on the Hampshire-Surrey border, I was in a pub last week  when a group of cyclists entered wearing full Lycra fatigues whom I knew as parents of my lad.  They said that they were hiring a minibus to go up to the Hawthorns and watch the game.  It's not an especially football mad area (an atmosphere of condescension usually arises when I mention the Baggies).  However, Aldershot FC does raise some passion in parts especially when playing Woking so it's quite possible that their allocation will be taken up.

Yes Dan. I usually try to put a more positive spin on things. But this time sounding like one of those fans (and we have them here) who use being negative as a reverse psychology, so that when they always predict doom and gloom, they can never be too disappointed when we lose.
In all honesty, I don't think Corberan will allow them to mess up, even if we don't field our strongest eleven.

Griffiths

Pipa
Taylor
Pieters
Reach

Chalobah
Molumby

Sarmiento
Fellows
Swift/Mowatt - 45 mins each

Dike / Asante - 45 mins each

You’d hope that would be enough to win.

Just been to see Barnet today, they are 7 places above Aldershot in the league.

Based on what i saw today i would go:

                    Griffiths

Pipa          Taylor       Ajayi   Pieters/Reach

              Chalobah  Molumby

Sarmiento     Swift/Mowatt  ( 45 each)     Fellows/Reach

               BTA /DIke    (45 each)

Should blow them away as long as professional about it.

Carlos has said "2nd team for this" Ajayi is going to the African Nations

So expect this side

Griffiths, Pipa, Taylor, Pieters, Reach, Chalobah, Fellows, Molumby, Swift, Higgins, Dike

Subs: Wallace, Hollingshead, Swift, BTA, Bartley, Townsend, Whitwell, Heard, Love

CLeary is out till end of Feb.

I'm sticking with my original team but forgot Ajayi was off to AFCON so bring Pieters in to CB and have Reach at LB

                    Griffiths

Pipa          Taylor   Pieters      Reach

              Chalobah  Molumby

Swift/Wallace if fit   Mowatt  ( 45 each)     Fellows

               BTA /DIke    (45 each)

Instead of Swift/Wallace could try some young wingers instead as an alternative.

One thing is for certain we don't want to lose to Aldershot or have a replay.   A 4th round tie could be lucrative and fund a loan signing.

We need to go strong and try and get the game done first half.

                Griffiths

Pipa  Taylor  Pieters  Townsend

     Molumby  Chalobah   Reach

  Fellows                      Pipa

Agreed. That not withstanding I wouldn't be starting Molumby given it was reported that he needed a pain killing injection before the Swansea game. Or at least that's what I think I read. Much better to rest him up for this one if at all possible in my opinion.

I would put quite a strong team out, I feel like Yokuslu and Kipre are too important to our team for us to be without but obviously I am not privy to fitness concerns. I'd like us to start strong, I think it is important. I have Palmer in ahead of Griffiths as I think it sends a message that we are taking the game seriously but have no real issue with Griffiths starting.

Palmer

Kipre
Taylor
Pieters

Pipa
Yokuslu
Chalobah
Reach

Fellows
Malcolm
Thomas-Assante/Swift - depending on fitness

I think Griffiths would be expecting to play in the Cups as it would give him much needed game time which he otherwise isn't going to get unless Palmer gets injured or sent off.
It's also a good opportunity to see how he performs in a real match setting as he won't have played since Stoke in the Carabao Cup back in August.

I'd assumed he would make changes, most managers do for the Cups and he made 9 for the Carabao Cup.
Our "2nd team" should still have enough to beat Aldershot. It's definitely a "banana skin" game.

The issue is the same as last season at Chesterfield where we had a collection of players that don't play together not gelling against a side that have more cohesion.

I'd prefer us to play a strong side like we did against Gateshead but, with our injury list, common sense would say give players a rest and don't risk unnecessary injury.

If we are not in the hat for the 4th Round, that would surely give the possibility of the EFL re-arranging a league fixture.  If the League is our priority, we don't really need any extra games now given the injury/AFCON situation. i.e. we need to win on Sunday.

I don’t think there’s any need to go to mad with the selection let’s get the game won we don’t play for 6 days after this
Griffiths,Pipa,Taylor, chalobah,Reach and Pieters should all start which is a solid base
The rest will depend who’s fit or not carrying niggles
We struggled past chesterfield last year and looking at the league table these are slightly inferior but please don’t underestimate them it’s their cup final

We should be temporarily forgetting all aspirations about play-offs and concentrate on sending Aldershot packing.
Given the desperate financial status of the club, we need to get through and hope for a very attractive game in the next round.
I went and witnessed a dire performance last season at Chesterfield, resulting in a totally unwanted replay.
No more of that nonsense please

You can bet your bottom dollar that every Aldershot player will be giving it 100%. That's their only chance.  If we lose, it will be because some of our players (maybe some who don't think they need to prove anything), take it a bit easier. The other thing is, I don't know how CC views the FA Cup.

Be too late now I expect.

Thought the original comment about wanting us to sign him was a little odd for a national league player so googled him. Incredible record for a 19 year old  in what seems to be his first year in men’s football.

Without seeing him, that data does suggest it could be a shrewd, low risk move. Norwich are rumoured to be in for him.

Lewis because has said Alershot have sold just over 5000 so far so should be some good noise from the away end.
I'm parked at the station and seen a very lot if Aldershotians streaming out towards the away end. Not terribly noisy about it yet though

Griffifths
Pipa
Bartley
Taylor
Pieters
Chalobah
Mowatt
Heard
Fellows
Dike
Malcolm

Not sure why we're risking Bartley when Ajayi is off to Afcon but he's made him captain so clearly wants the experience in there

It’s a tricky balance - selecting a team that will be good enough to hold off highly motivated opposition, without risking more damage to a thin squad.

Delighted to see Dike back in. On paper that group of professionals should be more than good enough to see off a team in the middle of the National League.

And we have players in there with points to prove.

We’d hope.

Sometimes you just want I player to score for more than just football. Not quite the same as these but I remember Becks pen against Argentina and Lampard having a pen after his mum died and beyond the specifics of that game you just hope they score.

Longer term, he’s missed a couple of headers today but it’s abundantly clear Dike gives us something BTA cant (and vice versa)

Well whilst we are cruising Nottingham Forest are losing 2-0 to Blackpool. And The Original Aldershot this was founded in 1992/94 beat Wolves in the first play Off in 1987 over two legs. Malcolm suffers the first Non League Tackle

I was praying he scored and i'm not religious. I can forgive him some rusty errors, i just want him to get through the 45 ok so he can build back to 100% over the next few weeks.

he’s starting to flag a little bit, 45 mins will do him no harm and these defenders will struggle with BTA in behind as they tire. Then there’s Love who is decent in his own right.

BTA would run them ragged with his work rate.

I would like to see more younger players brought on around the 60 minute mark personally if we are still in control

We played well first half and ‘Dickie’ Dike tried hard and took his goal very well.
Although two yellow cards I don’t think Shots are dirty, just a lot slower than higher league football hence they are late in the tackle.  Fellows been excellent so far.

Me too. Apart from a yellow card (we could do without collecting those when we’re 3-0 up against a non-league side) that was the perfect half.

Early goals to knock the enthusiasm out of them, a goal for Dike and valuable minutes for him and some of the other lads.

If the game is totally safe I’d give some of the younger ones a run for 15/20 mins.
Title: Re: In Game Chat
Post by: Baggies on January 07, 2024, 03:04:15 PM
A very professional performance and impressed that the youngsters have fitted in so well.

With Dike now going off I'd like him to gamble and give Love time up front rather, allowing BTA some rest. I'd imagine it will however be BTA, in the hope he gets a goal and some confidence.

Hopefully all kids on the bench we can get on at some point. Why not?

Good win, some good performances from the youngsters especially Heard and Fellows who was Man of the Match for me.

That miss from Layton Love will probably haunt him but he'll probably learn from it.

Great performance.  Very professional all round - although it felt like the 2nd half we were just a touch too casual.

Really liked the mix of youth and experience we went for.  Fellows was outstanding - man of the match for me.  Get him on a contract as he'll only be getting better.

Thought Dike did well on his return and Heard was very tidy.

One thing that frustrates about our play, and it was especially so in the first half, is how often when the ball gets to Bartley\Pieters (and sometimes Chalaboah\Mowatt) our play completely stalls.  Even when there's space in front of them to attack they stand still with the ball looking for a pass that isn't there and won't be there, then ends up having to play it sideways.  Would just like to seem them attack the space a bit more or use the ball more quickly.  They also tend to hit underhit passes out wide giving the opposition time to get back.

The result was clear cut . Thought Jovan Malcolm looked good on the left in the first half . Fellows looks like an established starter now . Thought Challobah gave a good all round performance.

Agreed, CC got the balance just right, and excellent to give minutes to so many youngsters.

Some look more promising than others, with Heard showing the most promise today. Hopefully he can develop physically.

Great for Aldershot to get their goal but Griffiths wrists don't look to have strengthened.

Senior pros were all solid/a class above, apart from Pieters who looked a bit shaky including for their goal. Rusty or legs gone?

Fantastic from Fellows, all the Young Lads played well. Credit to Aldershot, they had moments there fans were class had good banter never stopped singing and they got the goal they wanted. Good luck to them for the rest of the reason. Unless we get Wolves, Villa or Blues although if we get Brentford or Hull whoever wins that replay same team. If it is one of our rivals strongest team possible for obvious reasons. We have some cracking talent. Let's hope we Don't sell like we did to Rogers, Barry and the others.

A decent job and avoided a banana skin.

Thoroughly professional performance. Got the job done in the first half hour.
Really glad Dike and Fellows got their goals but all the goals were well taken.
Heard, Taylor and Fellows were very impressive. Good to see then tryjng through balls which didn't always come off but at least the idea was there.
Higgins was pretty anonymous and Love should have done better but they are both young and will improve I'm sure.
Whitwell was okay, played some decent balls and Shaw wasn't really on long enough to form an opinion.
Anyway onto the next round. Ball 9 I think.

Easy as they come. I saw the standard of the league they play in a few weeks back. Our b team would be far too much for them as long as we remained professional and we did.

Fellows MOTM, Heard looked good. Pleased for Dike.

Onto the next one

Banana skin avoided. Attitude spot on , early goal settled it all down and we were in cruise control after half an hour. Individually Fellows , Chalobah and Heard were excellent , Mowatt kept things ticking over whilst he was on . Good to see plenty of the youth getting a chance.
In truth we weren’t really ever in much trouble .

Enjoyed the game today.

It was a good team selection from Carlos, and it was great to see Daryl Dike making his comeback. The second half wasn't so good, but I think thats because the game was won and we brought on the young lads for a run out.

I’m thrilled for Dike.

I remember that special night against Rotherham in 1977 when Cyrille Regis made his debut. The crowd loved him from the very start, chanting “give it to Cyrille” when we won a penalty. Even if Ronnie Allen later berated Willie Johnston for letting him take it.

I think the support the crowd gave Cyrille that night helped his career into lift-off - and everyone who was there will remember his fantastic goal against Middlesbrough in the First Division on the Saturday. One of my favourite memories of all time.

I wouldn’t for one minute want to saddle Dike with a Regis mantle, but we’ve needed a hero for a very long time. Every good team needs one.

I really hope that the crowd get behind Dike. He strikes me as someone who could do a great job for us with added confidence and belief.

That’s what we gave Cyrille all those years ago. And how he repaid us!

Nathanial Chalaboh has been mentioned several times on this post match article as having a good game although has often criticised in the past.
He took the opening goal well which settled us down and I think there is a good player in there especially if he plays a more forward role rather than as defensive ball holder in midfield often coming on as a substitute for Okay - well done Nathanial.

Have just watched the goals.

The ball through from Whitwell for Fellows goal, plus the way Fellows took the goal were both equally sensational.

Echo what most others are saying: nice blend of experience and youth, Fellows, Mowatt and Heard were very good with good performances from our other experienced players such as Chalobah. Liked what I saw from Taylor, think he has a chance to be a big player for us although I can see why he is just behind the others in the pecking order. Delighted for Dike too who looked rusty, as expected, but his physicality was a notch or two above anything Aldershot had in their side.

Just a note on the setup today; we played our 343 shape today but in a way on the ball that I haven't seen us utilise before, with a midfield diamond. Mowatt was at the base pulling the strings, Heard at the tip with Chalobah right and Pipa left. This gave Fellows free reign from Right wing back to get beyond the front line and generally worked really well offensively I thought. It certainly gave Aldershot something to think about, often they had defenders pulled in to midfield which allowed Dike, Fellows and Malcom space in behind. The last thing you want to do in a game like this is labour for the first goal and give them a chance off a set-piece or something, so to cook something up to hurt them early was good to see.

He is a decent player for sure. Maybe has an attitude problem on occasions? But he can play. The last couple of cameos in the league from him have been okay too.

In the hat. Dike gets 45 minutes unscathed and scores takes pressure off himself. Fellows 90 mins goal and assist. Caleb Taylor looks quite useful also and young lad who played cm Fenton hear look good also needs a loan to get minutes. Other senior pros Bartley pieters and chalobah all did well to hold all that youth together

For anyone who was at the game or watched it how did Taylor do?
Does he look able to make the step up next season?
We have Kipre,Bartley,Pieters out of contract at the end of the season where would Taylor fit into the equation?

Wasn’t really tested. He’s already proven to be a top League 1 centre back so I don’t think we really learnt much today. He looks decent enough on the ball and is always a threat from set pieces. If we’re in the Championship next season then he needs to be starting or first choice rotation, otherwise he needs a new contract and a Championship loan.

My view was you can see how he could be a commanding centre half at championship level (possibly above) but does have things to learn.

He's very, very good in the air and decent on the ball. He's very comfortable on the ball, albeit he did try and carry the ball out at one point, got caught in possession and Bartley bollocked him.

His style is similar to Bartley in the sense he's no-nonsense, aerially strong and seems very much to prefer to play on the right - played right of a back three today which made him almost look like a right back at times. So would be the natural replacement in that sense. Can't really see him fulfilling any other role.

Harry Whitwell seen it on Match Of The Day that was a ball Jed would be proud of. Perfectly weighted, well timed
I know it was against Aldershot but Fellows look some talent. Some of our youngsters look quality get them signed long term loan em out we could have some Gems and it's about time. They put a smile on my face with how well they played. I think Whitwell and Taylor need to be brought on more. Fellows hopefully has confidence as he might be the answer to Wallace and Grady being out. I know he is considered to be and had shown the quality, but hopefully he know has a lot more confidence to try a bit more when he has the first teak around him. A lot of the youngsters did positive things. Dike looks good to. Overall really positive our future talents look good

Professional performance - good to see some of our academy graduates make first team appearances.

Second half was a bit of a none event as I thought we were too casual.

Impressive performances from Heard, Fellows and Chalobah who controlled the game.

Credit to Aldershot who I thought came across very well. Very much insistent on trying to get the ball down and work through the pitch.
