Coronavirus Thread / Re: Coronavirus

My main point is that having a coalition government has made it less of a political football for them than over here.  But you're right about the German health system. Its well resourced. One statistic I remember from the start of this is they had 28,000 intensive care beds, which compared to about 4,000 here.

You're right that our more adversarial system makes it more difficult to build the consensus needed for long-term healthcare planning. Yet ultimately, I think our travails owe less to our politicians than to the general public. The truth is we put our leaders in an impossible position. They have known for decades, indeed since its very inception, that the NHS model has major flaws, flaws that have become increasingly exposed as the population has grown and aged. They essentially have two options:

A) Change the model (i.e to something more like the German system)
B) Soldier on with the NHS model and make it more sustainable financially (through major tax rises, focused more on wealth than income)

Our politicians are powerless as plumbing for either spells electoral evisceration. So all they can do is squabble over the size of sticking plasters and the precise configuration of deckchairs on the Titanic.

I get German TV, and look in daily to their Corona news. I also get the impression  that PPE has also been a big problem there. They have only just brought in face masks for the general public in shops and public transport, because there were shortages for the medical staff. Funny how its just become a necessity for the public now that there have been large deliveries from Asia.
That said, I've been impressed with how their politicians speak. There are no wild promises about targets being met, or the great German this or that. Its careful planning, one step at a time. There is a coalition government so the parties are not trying to point score off one another. In fact you wouldn't know who was representing which party.

In fairness to our lot, German politicians have it far easier when it comes to healthcare matters. Not only is their system better but you can also constructively criticise without fear of being burnt at the stake as a heretic. It helps that for Germans their health system is just a health system as opposed to an ersatz religion.

Well you said 'It's in the Guardian, not worth the paper it's written on when appraising a conservative government'.
We all know how it works with newspapers and political stances. The Guardian is outnumbered by the more right leaning press. We have over 20k hospital deaths to date and God knows how many others in care homes and in the community, it's reasonable that someone asks questions.

There are undoubtedly serious questions to be asked regarding the government's response but the Guardian's coverage has been borderline disgraceful. Most of the opinion pieces read like a Poundland Roland Freisler / Andrey Vyshinsky tribute act and the comment section is just a bilious bog populated by bloated toads, bitterly squelching away in their own feculent narcissism.

Would have to agree has Charlie scored more at a highr level
Same has Brown v Bull, the Tatter scored more goals but mainly in lower div Than Bomber

I actually really admired Steve Bull as a player (he should have been our hero) but he couldn't hold a candle to Bomber, who wasn't even a striker.

It's a difficult subject, but the less generous way of looking at it is, that someone needs care, and if they have assets that could pay for it why shouldn't they use it?  The assets belong to the person, not to their children.  Would the same argument be made if it was a fifty year old millionaire who needed round the clock care suddenly?

You could argue that by putting the tax increase on everyone else, and in those kind of circumstances, it is basically just a way to help someone's children get the inheritance they think they're due.

Maybe there should be more contributions than being hit for the full whack or something, or looking into why care home care is so high.  £4000 a month would get you a full time live in carer with money left over.

Using the same logic, should we be dispensing with the NHS model?  ;)

No you are not, I agree, we are in for a rough ride all round, the "old" system was broken by the financial crash, this is ripping off the bandages, and there's still the consequences of the other matter that shall not be mentioned to factor in for good or bad.

This crisis makes the 'matter-that-shall-not-be-named' look pretty irrelevant. If you think it's going to be grim here - it is - just imagine what it's going to be like on the other side of the Channel. Carnage.

LMAO. I'd love to see someone dream up that collapse.

I think it's an every day waking nightmare for Spurs fans.

When it comes to Question 4 I think the answer probably has more to do with the fact that society judges lesbianism and male homosexuality quite differently (and always has done). You're not really comparing like with like.

That’s correct most contracts do include a force majeure clause, however given the amount of time that has elapsed since the initial outbreak and the hard evidence of other countries who are further down the line with the effects of the virus it’s hard to see how it could be considered an unforeseen act of god.

The devil is in the drafting but I suspect that Covid-19 and our government's response to it would constitute a force majeure event. Of course that doesn't in itself necessarily guarantee protection from liability for failing to perform or for delay in performance.

What will be interesting is what happens with contracts lacking a force majeure clause (you'd be amazed how many there are). Showing that a contract has been 'frustrated' is difficult at the best of times and the fact that there have been two other pandemics in the last 15 years puts you on a sticky wicket. You'd be left arguing that the extent of the global government enforced shutdowns was unforeseeable. It'll be a feeding frenzy for the lawyers.

That was awful to watch tonight. I’m sat in the Woodman Corner and the atmosphere in the ground was rubbish. The Geordies tonight embarrassed us, both on and off the pitch. The hone form continues to trouble me.

I don't think it was awful to watch at all. Two horrific errors aside we actually gave a fairly decent account of ourselves. From my perch standing at the back of the Brummie, I thought the Geordies were bang average on, and to my surprise, off the pitch (the super turnout notwithstanding). Sadly, even their support seems, just like ours, to have been thoroughly defanged by modern football.

I keep reading about this 10,000 waiting list for season tickets, those of you living in the Black Country, are there more of them about now? I always thought our support was fairly similar.

Our support has always been similar even if they have a larger potential pool to draw from. They're just all coming out of the woodwork now they're enjoying relative success; just like our lot would.

Can't be overly down as we were so superior to Forest. Krovinovic and Robinson were particularly good. Keep up that level of performance and we'll cruise to promotion.
