De Zerbi said when he loaned to us that he wanted Sarmiento to play a certain amount of minutes and games.
he wasn't getting that with us

could be out the rest of the season from last night as Cardiff rumours were a hamstring rupture which classes as a grade 3

Even if (Big IF) we wanted to bring back Grant we cannot, as its classed as an overseas loan and has to be for the full season.

not sure on that one as they are in the same league. the lines of what classes as 'overseas' are blurred.

if he was on loan to a team in the welsh league then that is overseas.

Apparently Wallace was much better when played in his best position out on the right yesterday. Let's keep him there please CC

he was but i would say some of it was highlighted by how narrow norwich defended the whole game, they had a left back who liked to go wandering as well so Wallace was always left in a lot of space.

some of the crosses he was putting into the box were brilliant however. a proper striker in the mould of a super Kev or even a Shane Long type would have easily had a hat trick in the first half alone.

does make me think what Dike could have got in that team on Tuesday

I don't want to move this conversation too far away from Conor, but I was looking back through our full backs from recent seasons, and there aren't many good ones, or least, few that have universally been appreciated.

Before Townsend and Furlong we had:

Gibbs - some would say lightweight in the tackle and injury prone
Ferguson - generally well rated, but left under a cloud
O'Shea - out of position and didn't offer much going forward
Holgate - generally well rated
Nyom - very up and down
Tosin Adarabiyo - out of position and not rated
Dawson - played out of position by Pulis, not good going forward
Brunt - played of position by Pulis, not enough pace
Gamboa - not played a lot
Pocognoli - not played a lot
Lescott - out of position by Pulis, a lot of ups and downs
Ridgewell - very up and down

Going back further you have the likes.of Billy Jones who people used to criticise for being a poor defender

I suppose the point is, either we have had fairly poor full backs for a long time, or, fans expect too much from full backs, including the likes of Townsend.

for me i think it's an issue with the direction the club has been going in the last 10 years.

when we signed Townsend, he was a backup option. general feeling was he wasn't good enough for our team.
6 years on from that signing he's now our recognised left back.

same season we signed Bartley, we all know how that rollercoaster has gone. but it's at the point now our defence is better with him in it.

4 of our 5 main defensive options have been at the club 5 or more years.

if Kipre doesn't play it's the same back 4 we had under Bilic in 2019/20.

we are 12 points better off compared to last season and 18 or 19 places higher in the league.
an argument for us doing this with a weaker squad as well.
Carlos is working some magic here

or certain players have a physical make-up which makes them more prone to certain types of injury.

like Dike

i think this is where sports science needs to be looked at.

player x has same type of injury around same time of year most years. why ?

is it the training they do, is it a reaction to the climate/temperatures

I was told today by someone who is well connected in the game that a Nigerian billionaire is one of the parties looking at us. Apparently he has been sniffing around to buy a club for a while and has been advised that we would be one of the better bets. He could well be the other party that Lepkowski and Goldberg were referring to as a tyre kicker and it has echoes of a plot out of Ted Lasso but just thought I'd share what I'd been told.

True but to be expected as all come down after multiple seasons in PL.

Rest of EFL getting worse and worse

also look at the bottom 3 in the prem, the gap is getting bigger between the leagues

he needs a break, but he's not going to get one for a few more weeks by the looks of it.

still works hard which is good to see but his touch has been lacking a lot lately more than usual and is getting muscled off far too easy.

type of spell where he just needs one to go in the net off his backside

For anyone who doesn't know and wants to we're currently 20th in the xg f/a table and not 7th as in the real one. Southampton are currently top with 'Valerian Ismael's Watford' in second.

https://footystats.org/england/championship/xg

yet we've scored 1 less than Southampton, our 9 to their 10.
we've also scored 5 more than Watford.

xG isn't always a correct reflection of a team.

what is clear is Lai doesn't understand what a loan is as he doesn't seem to pay anything back on any of them.

Could be an interesting season for them. Pau Torres isn't a like-for-like replacement for Ming's. They don't have that aerial presence without him

commentator was saying something about how they view him playing in the space between left back and left centre back. might leave an even bigger hole in defence if he plays there

they had 24 shots in the game with 13 on target.

however i think you need to look at the opposition, QPR are on a massive slide under Ainsworth

so Palmer stays with us between the sticks, but also Blackburn's number 1 is now gone before our game with them tomorrow

Swift created the most chances of any player in the league (99).  Wallace created 65 chances which was the 7th highest in the league. They didn't do as badly as being made out. It's not their fault the chances they created weren't converted.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/championship/top-scorers/assists

I'd actually forgotten about Rogic...he was terrible, but he made sense as cover for Swift. We also needed to get a winger/wide midfielder be able to cover for Wallace/Phillips/Diangana so Albrighton made sense in that context. The injuries to Phillips and Diangana meant Albrighton played a lot more than was ideal.

if we had players that had the instincts of a striker (touch and hit almost) we would convert a hell of a lot more chances.

one of the most frustrating things about our game is the amunt of touches players take and the slowing down to check back inside on to another foot. watch the players that score a lot they have minimal touches of the ball.
