England players have struggled for decades against the top nations, usually down to a lack of variety in the players we produce. I'm not sure if you can honestly say that with this squad though, there are several players now who look comfortable in possession and we have strong options in most positions. The fact we are still losing more than we win vs the top nations may well be on the manager this time. If we don't win the Euro's, or at the very least make the final having beaten top opposition, then I hope we say thank you and goodbye to Southgate.

This is an incredible generation of players with more still coming through, it would be a massive shame to waste it on a manager who isn't quite amongst the elite.

I keep hearing Southgate England teams have been / are the best ever in terms of talent. I agree it has depth and players are probably better on the ball on average, but best 11? I’m not sure. Maybe in a few years it will be but Take the 2004 team

James
Cole, Terry, Ferdinand
Gerrard, Rooney

That’s 6 who I think all definitely play in this 11. Rooney perhaps in a different way to how he did because of Kane but I think he gets worked in somehow. Then you’ve got players like Beckham, Scholes and Lampard, at least one more of which would probably forced their way in in the past (Southgate loved Mount so would have loved Lampard and I think in this Era becks plays centrally all his career and he was better than Henderson).

So 6 minimum and as many as 8 at times from 2004 would have been playing for Southgate in his 11 over his tenure.

Southgate is still managing them poorly though. He’s benefitted from a kind era where France have been the only nation not going through a transition of sorts, couple that with incredibly kind tournament draws and he’s failed every test he’s faced.  Said it before but 02/04/06/10 teams that beat us in tournaments all would have sent Southgate’s sides home. Does the 04 side win one of Southgate’s tournaments. I honestly think it does the final vs Italy.

Harrison has been left what 4 years or so ? If they are now filching 16/ 17 year olds and younger I can’t see that leaving to work with him is a direct result of how good he is/was there has to be more in play I.e agents , accountants with brown envelopes for Daddy etc.

Hopcroft was usually the one pictured with 8/9/10 year old's signing, so players he signed could still be as young as 12/13. Money will still be the big draw though I would have thought.  I think there is at least one more who will be going to Villa, which will at least in part be due to Hopcroft. I won't name him but I think he is 16 now and if its going to happen it'll be in the next 12 months.

The amount they spend is inconsequential and the potential rewards from poaching from us are high but when you consider Philogene, Chukwuemeka, both Ramseys and Archer (just of the top of my head) they’ve done far better out their own than they’ve got from us. Maybe we should try and get who Hopcroft and Harrison replaced.

Sadly it isn’t

Technically I think it could be agreed and sealed. He just couldn't be officially signed or be registered but that wouldnt matter since he's on loan.

I Fritzl, I dont think he is prem quality and think he would be found out. However that doesnt mean a prem club wouldnt take a chance based on his form with us. I'd expect both championship promoted sides, and relegated prem sides to now have an interest in him for the summer but his price is rising.

A million or perhaps even less probably would have done it in Jan IMO. It is significantly more now but I think it is nailed on he leaves Celtic this summer.

Grady Diangana is superb with the fans after the game...you can see he loves the club so much...always the last off applauding the fans.

Noticed this in particular this season. Some rumours over the years he didn’t want to be here and was unhappy which seemed likely to be true with his big drop off. However he seems much happier now even if his form hasn’t quite clicked. I’m hoping it will but who knows.

It’s a terrible game. Imagine most neutrals will have turned it off

Yep, no favours today. Norwich were a banker but I thought we’d maybe get one kind result. Big game tomorrow against another much improved side down the bottom

Another great goal. He has Moments of brillance but seems to fade dramatically as games go on.

His goals might tempt a prem club, but he won’t play at that level.   Almost certain he will be sold this summer though, probably in to the championship but the price rises with every goal

Probably because he’s Spanish but their manager seems very corberan-esq

Don’t know his background but if I were a qpr fan I’d be excited by him based on his time with them so far.

He’s young and still under developed physically in my opinion, I can see why he’s pulled.

Itlll be interesting to see what fellows comes back in July.

We were poor before the changes tonight

Agreed. Tonight was arguably the time sweeping changes made sense

Be livid as a qpr fan. Countless corners, blatant handball on line, missed pen. Probably didn’t test palmer enough but dominated 95 minutes. Nobody else  has controlled 99% of the game against us this season

Great point, completely undeserved. If we’d won that it would have been the biggest robbery i could have remembered for a while. What odds to lay QPR being relegated because they absolutely will not be.

We have to be better but we won’t play many more teams as good as qpr were tonight. Mad to say that considering try are where they are

Still less than QPR deserve at the minute . We have been terrible and will be lucky to get out of this with a point

Ainsworth must be as bad as Bruce. We haven’t helped ourselves but no idea how QPR are where they are

Like Goodman I honestly thought he was going to blast that pen, and put it over the bar.

That’s an amazing save from palmer for that header, scratch that think Kipre has saved it with his hand lol

To many sloppy passes.

We can’t sit back and allow them momentum, they are far better going forward than they are defensively. CC isn’t particularly cut throat and that usually works for him / us but I don’t think we can just concede the ball and possession in this one

Like baggie79 has said, left side of defensive is immobile too. Ajayi for peters would be sensible  iMO

QPR had looked a reallly decent side.  Key is obviously to get on the front foot.

« on: March 06, 2024, 04:42:56 PM »
I work for a global insurance broker, we have a division that does professional sport insurance and I know who heads it, we work with some of the same insurers and I’ve been at corporate events with him.

Players can buy their own policies to protect their own interest but clubs will often cover the cost this type of policy, basically as an employee benefits.

Clubs can also buy policies to protect their interest but it won’t be on market value, it will be fixed benefits  (market value is too uncertain, insurers like to know their potential liability). It’ll include things like death, permanent disablement (from being a pro) and temporary disablement, which will be a normal injury.

Long deferment periods are normal, 3-6 months, as niggles and smaller injuries are inherent risks of the game and foreseeable. Limits and scope / breadth of cover depend on what a club is prepared to pay.

Cardiff sued their insurance broker for £10m alleging professional negligence after the Emiliano Sala tragedy (a joke IMO since Cardiffs first defence was he wasn’t signed and it’s likely the policy would have excluded flying other than in fixed wing multi engined aircraft and I believe Sala flew in a single engine plane) but it was settled before the court needed to rule.

I don’t know why Dike is thrown in the equation. I can’t see how he can go anywhere. Injured until the end of the year, two years left and probably uninsurable for any new club. We would have to give him away and pay him up
