West Bromwich who?
« on: February 06, 2019, 03:51:18 PM »
Bit of a pointless discussion but I'm a thinker and this subject has crossed my mind more than once!

It's not very common amongst 'big' clubs but the smaller non-league clubs go out of business quite often and then often re-brand as something else.

If we were to follow that unfortunate path what would your choice of new club name be?

It would have to be Strollers. History is important, and in that scenario, would be all we had.

Albion FC if we really had to.
Strollers belongs to a bygone era.
The name Sandwell has always grated with me.

West Bromwich Albion is beautiful name.

"Strollers". Has history and was the name of the supporters club team we had in the day.

Can’t remember, where, but I read once that there were moves in the 60s to change our name to Albion FC, as it was felt it would help to expand  our supporter base further across the West Midlands and into Worcestershire.

Probably an urban myth; but similar to what I heard around the early 70s. Don Howe was pushing for that so it would give us a mental advantage; as we would start the season top of the league.

I would prefer us to be called simply "Albion"

I don't have an problem with West Bromwich Albion, but it's a bit of a mouthful, and I hate the way it's always shortened to "West Brom"

The other annoying thing is if you put "west" into Google the first thing it comes up with is "Ham"
Vorwärts die Breiten Hosen !

Surely we would just come back as West Bromwich Albion, like Rangers did? That way we could be a new club and still hang on to our history and past glories.

I actually wrote to Jeremy Peace years back suggesting that we should be called Albion in that we might be drawing support from all the way down the M5 as far as Hereford since the first match my father took me to there was a supporter from Hereford next to us.  (For the record we beat Nottingham Forest 3-2 that day under Vic Buckingham)

Probably completely unrelated is that the badge was updated soon after to one that had "Albion" in larger letters the "West Bromwich"

Wasn't that tried in the early 70's ? Didn't take off though. I do think you need an identity of an area personally.

I think it was big Ron's idea to call us Albion, because we would be first on the results programs before Arsenal.

Has to be West Bromwich Strollers.

You are defined by your history. And that for me is the perfect choice.

I personally hate the made up name of Sandwell.
