Albion can confirm winger Jonathan Leko has today joined Birmingham City for an undisclosed fee.

Leko has been with the Baggies since the age of 11 and was given the opportunity to make his first impression in the senior side under former boss Tony Pulis towards the end of the 2015/16 Premier League campaign.

Jonathan’s debut was a historic one as he became the first player born in the year 1999 to feature in a top-flight game and as a reward for his positive displays, the youngster was offered his first professional contract at The Hawthorns in 2016.

Performances in the following campaign secured Leko Albion’s Young Player of the Season award. In total the 21-year-old made 23 appearances and scored one goal for the Baggies before spending the 2019/20 season on loan at Charlton, where he managed 21 Sky Bet Championship appearances, scoring five times, only for an ACL injury to cut his spell short.

We would like to thank Jonathan for his efforts and wish him all the best for the future.

Absolute steal for the Blues if he stays relatively injury free.

Good luck to the lad. I doubt he was going to get much of a look-in with us in the Premier League (for now) so it's good he's got a chance to progress somewhere else. Hopefully we've got a decent sell-on fee if he moves on to better things from Blues.

Thank you for your service and the manner in which you have conducted yourself during your time at the Albion.

I hope you becoming the best player that you can and you have a successful career. I hope the club built caveats into the contact, particularly a buy back clause

Very good luck for the future young man.

Shame he hasnt made it as I really like him as a player and still think he will make it somewhere. We did include a sell on clause as well so even if he goes elsewhere after Blues we would profit to some extent.

Not good enough for us might be a good move for him going to Blues could be a good fit.

Seems like a really nice kid. Hope things work out well for him.

Disappointing to lose one from our Academy, a local lad as well. Still think £1 million is a steal, which we may come to regret when we get priced out of another transfer in this window.
However, I'm pleased its Blues he's chosen.

Good luck mate, think he will thrive with the blues with a full season under his belt. Not only do I hope we have a sell on but also buy back clause.

Did Leko transform into Sadio Mane during his injury lay off?  :o

Not good enough unfortunately. Good luck to him.

Good luck to him and I hope we have a healthy sell on like we did with Roofe.

Unfortunate that we could not offer him and Kyle Edwards to qpr as part of a deal for Eze.

I think QPR needed cash only.

I heard different and that they were one of the clubs after Leko.

It’s a good move for him personally.

He’s a likeable lad but there just hasn’t been the improvement I expected to see.

Might see him come good in a few years or find his level

I hope this works for Leko.  I have to say, this does seem a little on the cheap side, and a good bit of business for the blues. However, this probably reflects the times we are in where wage rates and fees in the championship will both be falling like a stone.

If that's true then i'm pretty comfortable. £1m with no sell on would be very short sighted but £1m with say a 20% sell on clause would be a mutually beneficial deal for both clubs.

He will need a manager who can really coach him in the same way Nuno or Wilder manage to do, but if he could harness his raw talent then there is an exciting footballer there.

Jonathan not in the Blues squad today. Does anyone know if he's injured or not fit etc.?

Still recovering from the ACL injury he suffered at the end of December. Doubt he’ll figure until next month at the earliest.
