Ain't he one of Homer's distant relatives, I believe Old grandpa Simpson was over here during WW2, and had a bike.  Still just as long as Jezza boy don't revert to his family colouring when it comes to favouring us in the key decisions.

One of his assistant refs obviously sucks, the other's a chicken stealer, and the fourth official you can never be sure of. We got no chance with this bunch unless we use our billions in spare cash to pay em off.

Not going to be easy in a local derby, so I hope we do not play him. Maybe give him the last 15 mins just to keep his hand in so to speak, or if, God forbid, we need a goal and he might make the difference. After 2 meaningless internationals, and the travelling, his body needs a little rest  even if he is feeling 100% mentally. Think he is the sort to come back stronger if held on the rein a bit.

One never knows: and I understand that we should perhaps look out for the Tamworth and Gloucester old spot aerobatic teams, Hugill, Grant and/or Grady, or whoever IV puts in might just do a job. It doesn't matter so much how, as how many points we can accrue at the moment.

I have never been a fan of SJ, but his recent levels of performance have begun to win me round to the extent that I would prefer him to sign a new contract and stay for another couple of years. But maybe we should start to get used to the idea of him not being here after his contract or even after January, and start thinking about giving his replacement a fair chance. Whoever that replacement might be.  I believe finding an instant improvement on his present form will be very difficult.

Shepherd, just my opinion, but are you having a laugh. Shepherd couldn’t lace SJ boots. He was an awful keeper.

it is all about options isn't it? I think Shepherd like SJ liked the odd photo opportunity save, and like all players could make a mistake or two. He was possibly no more than a little better than average for his time, certainly not the best. But on the stuff that really counts he was a vastly better goalkeeper than SJ. Shepherd's Communication, with his defenders, His Command of his area, and his Catching from crosses and shots were all far superior to what Sam has shown. For instance that catch and throw out from Sam for England, was just about par for most decent goalkeepers in Shepherd's time. Shepherd and company could also punch a ball out properly without flapping it into a danger area unlike your beloved Sam. Lace Sams boots? Shepherd would show Sam how to do it properly my friend.

Certainly through a mist of time and nostalgia, I would  go for Osborne, Shepherd, Godden Miller Hoult and Foster over SJ. However having said that, I also think that SJ has shown some improvement this season. Trouble is his only real consistency is having a couple of 'dodgy moments in most matches. Possibly not all entirely of his own making but poor nonetheless.

Sam is not likely to be our player next season anyway, he wants to leave and does not appear to be interested in signing any sort of contract with us. We should try our best to get a decent fee as soon as we can whilst his stock is so high nationally, and say thanks and goodbye, and wish him all the best for a good future at a wealthier club.

Bit of an interim team, covid affected run up etc, very very surprised if we get anything at all from this series, certainly not The Ashes. But you never know, and can live in hope at least until the first ball is bowled.

He can only play what is put in front of him, but yep if he did it every week or even just most weeks there would never have been any criticism from me. Unfortunately......... he doesn't do it very often at all. Just hoping we can get a good fee in January, he goes to a real premier club and we can say good bye and good luck.

Top goalkeeping from SJ. The catch was just the sort of command a lot of his critics on here want him to exhibit. His reading of the game, his awareness, and the execution of the pass for his 'assist'  to the cheat's first England goal was. even more than I would have expected from a world class keeper. SJ is not world class - yet, and will probably have to sign for Tottenham even to get to be England first choice, but at the moment he is still Albion. Kin well done Sam.

Agreed re Townsend, and as I said I also think SJ is mostly ok as well, or at least improving. it is sadly the case that the slightest misjudgement by a keeper resulting in a goal will often be over analysed and criticised. Few of the goals we have conceded; and that is not too many at all so far, have been entirely one player's fault, but have been the result of a combination of errors, from a combination of players. But it's not about individuals it's about a defensive unit that is a little short on talent and confidence in each other, especially centrally when playing the high line. I think it can and will improve, with the right players in the right positions and as they get used to the new system.

We would all like to see improvements throughout the club, but some of the overly critical analysis of the team and individual players over every goal against us is well and truly OTT. Sometimes an opponent is going to score, sometimes an opponent plays better, than we do. It does not make us or any of our players worthy of being dismissed as  sh*te. It is football ffs we will drop some points and lose some matches against teams we might be expected to beat. So will most other teams in this league. We have been watching it long enough to get this surely.

Cost us 3 points we never looked like scoring last night so i don't know how you worked that one out?

Read my post again maybe you will realise  perhaps that I was not apportioning particular blame to SJ merely trying to point out that as a goalkeeper you can have a great game yet still get blamed for a loss of points. OK I maybe should have said one and not three, a mere slip of phrase.

If you insist on pedantry

Fact: SJ has more than once cost us 3 points.

Conjecture: That we would not score.

Conjecture: That had SJ not been again caught in no mans land they would not have scored and we might then have gone on to score and win the match.

So how do you work out that had they not scored then the general run of the game might have changed and we might just have got something right in their half of the field? Unlikely but stranger things have happened.

All ifs and buts, and almost certainly nonsense, but no more nonsense than taking a single part of a post out of context, and using it to making a critical comment about the team and the poster. Had you nothing more constructive to offer in trying to defend an inconsistent goalkeeper?

Hold on people are slagging of keeper who made some cracking saves and kept out penalty effort, lads you need to let go of his vile connection. Sam has been instructed to be a sweeper keeper by Val,Mom for us as he kept the score down.

Hold on yourself. Some posters do seem to have an issue with some particular players, and some do seem to prefer slagging off players to actually making observational criticism.  But most are simply posting about a poor team performance, (some admittedly do not post at all when we play well) and commenting on what they saw. The majority are fair and honest appraisals of the team and individuals.

With regard to SJ; I have never been a fan, but will freely admit he has improved, and is trying quite well at the sweeping role. Even on the back of this poor team performance he made some good saves, including the one from the harshly awarded penalty against him. Unfortunately for a goalkeeper though, no amount of excellent saves during a game can make up for a single error that ends up costing the three points. It was not the first time either was it?

Somebody like Yokuslu with the experience to know where to go to receive a pass to help out defenders under pressure, and cover opponents runs, cuts down the number of attacking options for the opponent. Add to this the ability to carry or pass, or hoof the ball, and to make the right decision more often than not to get us back up the pitch, and give attackers a better chance, all improves the team defence. Defending is a team effort, as is attacking. We are weak in the spine of the team and so far have  just about managed to get by at this level, Ok we could welcome better players in most positions and CF CH may be a priority along with a goalkeeper, but Centre Mid has been a priority for a number of seasons, and Yokuslu despite age concerns for the longer term, is one of the best options we have tried and might possibly  be available to us.

Back on topic: SJ is not doing too badly with his efforts as a sweeper keeper, but is still prone to the same slight misjudgements of bounce, pace and positioning and lack of confident ball handling that has dogged his career with us. Certainly with top central defenders in front of him these would be less catastrophic and he could learn to be a very good keeper.

Unfortunately we will have to develop these defenders because we cannot afford to buy them. SJ does not help his defence to improve, and our present defence does little for SJ's improvement. Catch 22, but with a couple more like Dara O'Shea coming through, and a good experienced keeper to give them confidence we might just get there over time. This of course does not take into account any management and coaching team inputs, which will no doubt be significant.

No-one has ever said Johnstone is perfect.  This criticism/frustration goes back to last season.  There were people jumping on Johnstone when we had the following results: WBA 0 AV 3 / WBA 0 Leeds 4 / WBA 0 Arsenal 5.

Never mind the fact these teams just walked through our midfield!

We did the right thing in getting shut of Austin & HRK, as they weren't good enough.  However, Hugill is not the answer.

In summary, IMO the biggest barrier to promotion is we are 1 good midfielder short.  We should go all out for the non-playing Yokuslu in Jan 22.  Surely he can "tolerate" the Championship for a few weeks until May 22?

Whilst I completely agree with most of your post Greg, and also like the idea of a Yokuslu in the team, my criticism of SJ goes back right to his first season with us. He has never seemed to be in charge of his domain on the pitch. Looks like he is too pleasant a bloke to shift his defenders around and make them know that he is in charge. Crosses, and shots from distance have also resulted in goals that might well have been saved. Sam just does not appear to have the judgement and spatial awareness of the better keepers. One old guy who was in a works team I played for a couple of times used to always finish the managers pre match stuff with 'And just remember if you hear me shout KEEPER  get out of the ******* way or I WILL smash ya". Doubt if he got much more than six inches off the ground when he jumped, but I don't remember him ever missing many crosses. (Which was just as well because in spite of me being a shade over 6ft and taller than a lot, I was utterly useless in the air.) ::)

SJ has improved with us and despite some really bad errors has also had some superb performances, and made some great saves, but despite his actual age is still a bit' young' in goalkeeping terms. He will eventually make an excellent keeper in a decent team, but I don't think it's fair to expect him to prop up such an uncertain defence as ours. Our defence would benefit from an older more experienced and assertive goalkeeper behind them. Although some less accident-prone defenders might help a bit as well ;D

The only way is up for Molumby you'd have to hope. He's been hopeless so far but on very limitted evidence.

Jake is Jake you get what you get he's not going to progress at his age. Generally he's OK at this level, falls well short in the Premier League.

Absolutely. Molumby cannot be judged on a few minutes in a couple of games, but no doubt some have made up their minds already. Jake's errors  seem to be highlighted whilst the odd bit of good play gets overlooked he is, for me, generally ok, not good but ok at this level as Atomic says. However more performances from the team like last nights and Premier League is not going to be something we need worry about. It was truly abysmal and whilst Hugill was not too much worse than the rest, he was indeed one of the worst whilst  I thought Livermore was one of the better ones.

Nothing like a disgrace, just a poor performance that a team desperate to prove something against their superiors sometimes can take advantage of.

Stoke deserved it we were awful. We were weak physically and except for Livermore were bullied too easily off and on the ball. We were slow of thought and action as a team. The lesser players were not helped by each of our better players having a nightmare. Nothing we did was good enough. Nothing we tried came off. Matches like this happen - learn from it and move on - win the next few games and forget this one until we play them at our place.

It had to happen sometime, pity it was against these, but thankfully the 'unbeaten' tag is now cleared, and our faults and deficiencies can be addressed and rectified over the next weeks. We need to work out how to get around big lumps who physically can dominate us and shove us around. Thought their penalty was a lot softer than our free kick by the way, but depends on how well you can fake a fall I suppose.

Sorry for our loss but will get over it.

Easy decision for the ref who called correctly. Had it been the other way round decision would still have been correct. The problem is the stuff that is not called foul, stuff off the ball, blocking runs without the ball, jumping into a player about to head it etc.  - then diving forwards as if shoved in the back.  Ref got this one right but has given Stoke the benefit more often than not.

We need sharper thought and movement. Changes required. Can still win this, we have improvements off the bench. COYB

You make a particularly good point about the DAB access mate so will defer to your opinion on that, I can be a bit blinkered at times.

On a slightly different tack, if I cannot get to or watch the game then Bombers input is the next best thing for me, so worth listening on WM just for that.

Agree entirely about the judgement calls on who they cover as the bigger or most important
games, it seems that vile and dingle games usually tend to get the call, although that also may just be my imagination.

What Mowatt has done on the pitch is of course excellent, but also the way he has slotted into an existing team, which often as a 'managers man', who followed his boss from their previous club might be difficult. It says something about him and our team/club that it has worked so seamlessly. Also the Manager who has got the individuals working for each other and the TEAM. This is often the most difficult aspect and I think it should be recognised how all the professionals are trying to pull together. Hopefully the crowd all the way around the pitch at the games can now see their way to joining them, and try to lift and encourage when it does not always work as well as we all would wish.

WM is a BBC station. BBC budget. Money will talk. What bugs me most is when they cover most of the local games and keep interrupting our commentary to tell us what's happening at the seal park or the mixing bowl. Doubt very much anybody listening to THE Albion game, has the slightest interest in these inferior if more expensive clubs until half-time or post match. And which of us gives a dog turd about lahnon or mancky sides whilst listening to Albion games?
