Title: Forum Issue
Post by: AlbionFan on July 07, 2018, 12:33:22 PM
Question for the Moderators

Is there an issue with the PRE-SEASON FRIENDLIES FORUM? I know it was recently moved.

I’ve tried reaching it on several occasions, but only get an error message

Problem is the hosting companys end, been happening since they did some maintenance a week or so ago, it is being monitored and if it continues we will be moving away from them.

Until very recently the reliability of the site has been excellent.

All down to hosting company issues, they assured us it was sorted but obviously not.

Can I just say to the person who posted elsewhere that we did not just lock the thread in the main board as you stated, the Admin who locked it explained why it was locked as there are already 2 threads in the announcements forum so please ensure correct details are posted elsewhere

Just to point out yet again it's out of our hands , we run / mod this site for somebody else.
To see something 100 % wrong about us written on another Albion website by a member from here ( plus another dig ) is annoying really especially as this member is a mod himself on that site although granted there appears to be 12 members in total.
If you're going to have a pop get your facts right.

This, without question and without fear of contradiction, is the premier West Bromwich Albion forum on the internet and has the best, fairest and hardworking mods.

And when you are the best, those that envy your success and standing will take pops at you, they hardly ever reach the target let alone hit it, pathetic behaviour.

Not trying to rude, honestly and I really don't mean to come across as anything other than genuinely having the site at heart but this seriously isn't good enough, neither are excuses. Needs sorting.

I understand that but that was days ago. There are 1,440 minutes in a day. How long does it take? The site is going to lose members if this carries on. A lot of people love westbrom.com but patience doesn't last forever. Albion is a community, this site is very much part of it. Transfer deadline coming up and site down YET AGAIN! Not good.

Mate, these guys provide us this wonderful website for free! They've said they're trying to deal with it. Moving servers isn't always an easy process if the hosts they're dealing with aren't doing there job properly - they can't just move. Very unreasonable response if you ask me.

I suggest if you have a problem then contact Glenn who along with the rest of us have jobs to do away from this forum as well as having lives.

As someone who was an admin on this site then I would have expected you to appreciate what goes on and how sometimes things are out of our control a bit more but I guess not.

Glad to see us back up and running...but if there something that can be done to prevent this from happening again? It has been fairly common over the past few months to see it go down. Perhaps make a drive for donations to purchase better hosting? I am sure that people would be willing to chip in.

Either way...Albion games cannot be taking place without this place to comment on them  :-X

For those of us who are not on Facebook/Twitter etc, you do not realise how much you miss this place until it is gone.
Title: Re: Forum Issue
Post by: NJS on November 11, 2019, 08:10:57 AM
Just a suggestion but would it not be a good idea to cease allowing members to be logged in "forever".  I would imagine there is some context memory taken up by every online but not actually active user.  If this memory is backed up on disc say in a database  then that too grows and grows in time.  I don't know whether this is the problem but I guess it's testament to the popularity of the site and of The Albion.

It isn't that much of a hardship to log back in.
Title: Re: Forum Issue
Post by: Adder on November 11, 2019, 08:41:22 AM
I work in a company which amongst other things hosts services for other companies. Two things spring to my mind...if we had one of the paying services off-line for such a long period we would be linched or in deep trouble anyway. Also, in some cases we would have to pay compensation to the affected companies. I don't know if this is the case for us, but any potential compensation could help finance a switch of hosts maybe. As someone else has said I'd be happy to contribute to any switch of provider costs.

Stress this is in no way a complaint towards the mods.

Apologies for the issues.

The issues was again at the end of the hosting company. The timing was not good as Glenn was just arriving in the US at the time and the hosting company are not the easiest to get through to given you have to get a ticket and wait for them so once it wqas reported it was a case of waiting for them to get back to us etc.

I apologise for not keeping people update on Twitter and in case of any future issues please check our Twitter page @westbromcom where I will update.

Liking the new forum. Just a small query though. The forum is in english but my user area is in Spanish (i think) when selecting the drop down menu. Any advice how to change it? TIA.

Should be sorted now

Hi people, great layout. However I only seem to be able to get it on data. When I’m on WiFi it just says can’t connect to server. This started yesterday morning, but the new screen on data only appeared about 2pm today, before then I was only getting the old screen with a few messages. Any ideas please?

Probably a bit late now but I’d suggest this was a DNS refreshing issue. I presume the site has moved to a new provider or address; some internet providers take a bit longer to update their records

I have to say, after a period of, annoyance (because of downtime), familiarisation and getting used to the new format, I really really like it.

Where did you say the donate button was?  ;D

Really like the new site, though tonight it popped up with a blocked message due to firewall. I had to do one of those captcha things, then toggle my airplane on and off and I seemed to gain access. This was on 4g. Anyone tell me why as I’ve never seen that message before

Why cant I find In Gamee Chat and After Match Debate

I have no idea why you can't find in/after game chat but I've copied the link below.

http://westbrom.com/forum/index.php?board=100.0

On another note am I the only person who can no longer see an option to view 'replies' to previous posts and 'posted since last visited'? I've only viewed/posted via phone since the site changed and the format may appear different via laptop.

Currently having to check through each separate forum for updates to posts which is providing quite time consuming. Other than that I'm very impressed with the painting and decorating that's been done. Cheers very much to whomever.

I've just noticed the 'new answers' fixture on the profile drop down.

Sorted  8) .

Yes. Thank you. I have.
My Saturday afternoons will be full again as I read the match on BBC/In Game Chat and watch the Horse Racing.

I don't get the '403 error' when using in built emojis. But there's been a few times when previewing posts that it's said the body of the post is empty (when it's not) or there are insufficient characters. Re emojis there have been times when they just don't show at all on preview but without the error message. When that's happened I've posted anyway, refreshed the page and edited emojis in without previewing the post. It's been fine then.

Have you tried more than one browser as sometimes sites work better on certain browsers ? I use Google Chrome mostly and haven't had any issues.

For the Mods, not an issue more of a suggestion / request, but rather than start another thread I thought I'd post here.

I do like the new layout of the site, particularly the new menu bar at the top of page. The calendar option interests me as it has a lot of potential and I was wondering if it would be possible to extend it to include match day dates, primarily for the first team and later for the juniors. I know you can upload some files to calendars that automatically populate the calendar, which would save you time and effort.

Additionally, could members suggest dates that they would like included in the calendar, relevant to the Albion of course. For instance and what made me think about this was today's Albion Foundation event that many may have wanted to attend but were unaware of.

And for future development of the calendar, perhaps we could have a pop up reminder a few days before an approved event is due in the calendar.

I know you are all busy getting on with your lives away from this board, but it's just a suggestion / request, Thank you for reading

Good afternoon Mod Team,

I have a query and was hoping you might find time to answer.

In the main menu at the top of the screen, second item from the left is the “Help” section, with hints and tips etc. Within that Help menu, there is reference to BBC (Bulletin Board Code) so Posts can be spiced up a little.

I started a Sacked in the Morning thread and thought I’d a use different colour text so that members viewing the thread, could quickly identify any changes to the thread following sackings or inclusion of a new manager.

After Michael O’Neils sacking I made a post using Blue Text, which was reset back to black text by a Mod. I though, I shouldn’t have used blue as it and red are used by the Mods. So I thought I’d use green text instead so as to make the post standout, but that was also reset back to black.

So, just for clarity and to save me from wasting Mods time in resetting the text colour, is the Colour Text facility within BBC unavailable to forum members in there posts?

From the Forum rules which are stickied on the main board and elsewhere:

"PLEASE DO NOT USE COLOURED TEXT IN POSTS, USE BLACK WRITING ONLY."

Yeah, that occurred last night but seems to have resolved for most users, although I have noticed that old posts have had their apostrophes replaced

'

&

Looks like it's not affecting new posts
