Let's face facts: our defence was the worst in the league last season, and our most error prone defender in a very error prone defence was probably Tamas. It's understandable that not many people are keen on him being one of our two first choice centre backs, especially when we have a player who never put a foot wrong for us last season and has a CV with accolades including 30 odd Spain caps not getting a look in . He was OK in the Man U game (a bit shaky but he didn't do anything wrong) and it sounds like he played well in the Chelsea game (didn't see the match myself but everyone seems to be praising him), so you can't really fault his efforts so far this season. However we're only two games in, there's 36 more to go. I'm not sure he's a good enough player to be consistently good all season, he had some good games last season as well to be fair to him but we all remember how error prone he was. I can see this being another Meite situation in that he'll have a bit of a renaissance, he'll have a few games where he looks great and makes everyone who said he's not good enough look like fools, but then he'll make a few horrendous mistakes and then he looks like a bad player again. Hope I'm wrong but that's what I can see happening, deja vu. Regardless of how good Tamas keeps playing I think we definitely need a new centre back, especially since Ibanez isn't going to be given a go.
The criticism Morrison is getting is more than just. The couple of wonder goals and the occasional good assists masked what was very poor season from him last season. He just doesn't do enough, in most matches you wouldn't know he was playing if you hadn't seen the teamsheet. If you're a defender or a keeper or holding midfielder then 'not being noticeable' is usually a good thing, but if you're a winger or an attacking midfielder then you can't get away with it because it's you're job to try and make things happen. The likes of Tchoyi, Dorrans, Odemwingie, Thomas, Brunt may not always get it right but you always notice them when they're playing. He was anonymous against Man U and it sounds like he his performance against Chelsea was similar, how long can he stay in the team playing mediocre? One thing in Morrison's defence is that I think he should be playing on the right, not in the centre or on the left, he was very good there during the Mowbray Premiership season.
