23,654 was the official figure and I can't remember the stadium ever looking so threadbare, certainly for an opening game of a premier league season.
I confess that I didn't go. I thought about going. I even pulled on my baggies shirt and got into my car. I sat there on my drive, contemplating whether to do it or not.
My heart telling me that I might see some good football and a win.... My head suggesting that I'll end up spending the best part of £100 for the privilege of being bored, disappointed and then ultimately angry whilst sat in traffic listening to other fans bitching and moaning on radio WM.
Thankfully, this time, my head won.
But my question is this... What can we do to get more people to the ground?
Granted, there is very little that we can do that would affect the style of football but what about improving the atmosphere in the ground. Surely if the overall experience is better then more would go?
Standing sections?
Singing sections?
Song sheets being handed out?
Live band?
Half time Elvis impersonator?!?
I just feel that we need to inject some entertainment ourselves. Thoughts & ideas?
