West Bromwich Albion FC / New spine
« on: December 28, 2013, 06:54:10 PM »
Ok, I think a large reason we are struggling is that we no longer have a solid spine throughout the team. Players that used to be Old Reliables are wobbling and up top we have had a void this season.

How do you see our best 'spine' as things stand now and for the rest of the season? Whichever combination I try there is always something problematic. For example:

Berahino (F)

Gera (CAM)

Mulumbu (DM)

Olsson (CB)

Foster (G)

Berahino is a youngster breaking through, Gera can't play 90 mins game after game, Mulumbu is so sloppy/slow with the ball, Olsson is a bit up and down atm, Foster likewise.

WBA unaffected by saga - Reid

http://www.teamtalk.com/west-bromwich-albion/8471235/WBA-unaffected-by-saga-Reid

Steven Reid says the Peter Odemwingie saga has not affected West Brom, but admits he would not have behaved in the same manner as the forward.

Odemwingie was given time off over the weekend and missed Sunday's 1-0 home defeat to Tottenham, the Baggies fifth loss in their last six Barclays Premier League matches.

The 31-year-old is expected to return to training at some stage this week after driving to Loftus Road without permission on transfer deadline day in the hope a move to QPR would go through.

That followed a series of Twitter rants against the club after a transfer request was rejected.

But when asked how the situation had affected the dressing room, Reid said: "Not a great deal to be honest. We've got a strong group with a lot of leaders in the dressing room who have good, strong characters.

"It's a matter that the club are dealing with now and I'm not sure what the outcome will be. It's up to them how they deal with that.

"There's enough characters and leaders in the dressing room to get through it.

"Maybe that group wasn't as strong when I first joined but it is now and maybe that's why we're in the position we are in in the league.

"It (Odemwingie's behaviour) is not the way I'd go about doing things and I'm sure it's not the way a lot of other lads would, but these things happen in football."

Reid admitted Odemwingie could have some role to play in the future as West Brom try to halt their current slump.

He said: "Will we welcome him back? We'll have to see and it's up to the club how they deal with it.

"But if it does happen I'm sure we'll get on with it and there might come a point in the campaign when he's needed.

"It's up to the club and I'm not going to get involved in team selection. It's also up to the fans how they deal with it."

Reid believes Albion need to "stop shooting ourselves in the foot" and admits the players felt let down by left-back Goran Popov's red card for spitting at Spurs defender Kyle Walker.

Head coach Steve Clarke confirmed Popov will face disciplinary action in addition to the three-match ban he must now serve.

West Brom had to play the last 42 minutes with 10 men and they eventually succumbed to Gareth Bale's superb strike.

Reid said: "In recent weeks we've been shooting ourselves in the foot and at the start of the second half Goran has let us down with the red card.

"He's obviously given the referee the opportunity to show the red card and, when you go down to 10 men against a team with the quality of Tottenham, it's always going to be difficult.

"Goran's English is spot on to be honest, he doesn't need to say anything because we've had words in the dressing room and we've now got to regroup and go again."

Time for the 'strong characters' to show some strong character and get the season going again.

ALBION’S FA Cup third-round replay with QPR at The Hawthorns has been rearranged for Tuesday, January 15 (ko 8pm) at the request of both clubs.

Ticket prices for the replay have been reduced to £15 adults, £10 seniors (over 60s)/students/under 21s, and £5 under 17s.

They will go on general sale in person and buy phone at the East Stand box office from tomorrow (Tuesday) and online from Wednesday (with no booking fee).

All unclaimed seats will be freed up to go on general sale at this point.

Just wanted to say it was good to see Big Ish score a trademark goal in the friendly against Peterborough. For those of you that haven't seen it on Albion Player, he recieved the ball in our own half by the center circle and proceeded to turn their defender and run the length of the pitch before finishing clinically.

Let's get Ishmael a full pre-season and see where he is at, hopefully he can find the power and speed that made him a PL level forward and earned him his new contract. It looks as if he is well on his way.

in the PL with Norwich. This naturally gives rise to the obligatory question... Do we have a Ka-ching! moment here with triggered transfer fee clauses? From my understanding we were not supposed to get a great return on our initial investment but maybe it is better than hoped for now  8)

• Squad break-up inevitable if Premier League status is lost
• 'There would be a £40m hole in our cash flow,' says Sullivan

http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2011/apr/29/west-ham-united-relegation

...
Asked how nervous he is regarding the challenge of staying up Grant says: "It's money time now. We need to be at our best. This is the money time." David Sullivan, the co-owner, is clear about the financial consequences if his club sink. He says: "There would be a £40m hole in our cash flow which would have to be met by myself and [co-owner] David Gold."
...

"The ramifications of relegation don't bear thinking about," Cottee says. "They're £80m in debt [and] they pay a fortune to the players in wages. The top ones would leave, the younger players would be vulnerable to the bigger clubs: exactly what happened in 2003 when the club was relegated. And, they move to the new stadium in 2014."

-------

Some serious pressure on West Ham to turn their season around. Not that I really care tbh, I just want us to win against Villa and Wolves and ensure our PL survival. Come on lads, fight like men possessed tomorrow.
