I like Hegazi but is he going to solve all of our problems? For me no. He's been part of a defence that has shipped goals for fun over the last 2 seasons. A new keeper would see a vast improvement IMO.

Agreed. He's had Dawson, Bartley, Johnstone among his back line. Egypt in ACON conceded one goal I think. Hegazi is class but he's not god he needs quality around him like anyone else. While we have Bartley and Johnstone as regular starters we will always concede more goals than ideal.

Isn't there also a new unknown to add to this equation? We are clearly working on a new midfield strategy which will hopefully make opposition midfields have to do a greater defensive job themselves and so prevent them landing on our back four in waves as they seemed to do for most of last season

That's so true.  I think it was Johan Cruyff who said the opposition can't scoe if you're in possession of the ball.

I have to keep remembering when you say centre half you mean central defence.

In Oz, a centre half has always been in midfield.

Maybe that’s why we’re so far behind you guys.  :D

Yes this as well mate. Last season we didn't have the legs in midfield AND we couldn't keep possession of the ball for long periods. Put these two issues together and you've no way of being solid unless as a team you defend the edge of your box and put everybody behind the ball.

Whilst it is fantastic news that he is back, I don't believe it's the be all and end all solution that some are hoping for. Yes he is a fantastic defender and will make a massive difference, I'm just not sure he's that vocal in terms of commanding those around him, which is what we need, given the lack of experience we have at present.
I would still like to see a better, more confident keeper in there as well.

I’d really like an absolute backside like catermole/yacob in our midfield

This might explain it....

#WestBrom are understood to have rejected a £3.4m offer from Saudi Arabian side Al-Ittihad for Ahmed Hegazi. #Wba

If we have rejected it I don’t see why he wouldn’t be in the squad though?

Maybe player “not in the right frame of mind”?   I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see him sold.  Very unfortunate to get injured and then lose his place to an exceptional pairing.   Worth more than £3.4m though.

https://www.birminghammail.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/west-brom-bilic-hegazi-transfer-17458942

Hegazi is believed to have been the subject of a rejected bid from Saudi Arabian side Al-Ittihad - Bilic’s former club - ahead of the opening of the January transfer window, and the Croat confirmed that that played a part in said incident.

The 28-year-old was reportedly valued at £3.4m by the Saudi club.

“It has something to do with that,” Bilic revealed. “Something happened yesterday on the training ground. It is not something I want to share or discuss with the media

That doesn't sound good at all. Let's hope it gets sorted i think he's a key player for us. He is better than Bartley.
