As the title says, why is it that players feel the need to spit. Its utterly disgusting and totally unnecessary. Do these people spit in the middle of Sainsburys or when they are playing with their children. It winds me up seeing them do it.

I dunno, when I was doing a lot of running I often found myself needing to spit when I got a bit breathless. Think it may have something to do with your lungs opening up.
Funny though you don’t see many athletes do it so maybe I’m just a weirdo

When I used to play, many, many years ago, all that running around for 90 minutes made my mouth feel "claggy", if that's the right description, and spitting helped clear it for the next lot  . I suppose your mouth dries out as your are sweating and losing fluid as you aren't taking liquids on board. So, I understand why.

However, last night I saw Slaven spit and I though he's not running around for 90+ minutes, but then I realised, he kicks ever ball, heads every ball, runs and covers every inch of the pitch during the game from the technical box and I thought, you know what, he's entitled to spit.

No problem with people spitting generally. Other than when it's a real snot suck from the back of the nose and upper lung tract, accompanied by a throat gurgled, hawked up greeny and a lip smack as somebody's internal sludge slaps across the pavement. Urgh.

One of the most bemusing 606 phone-ins comments I heard was when a Liverpool fan suggested that Suarez biting was no where near as bad as Popovic spitting in the direction of a player.
