Now that Bruce has seen this dross, will he change?

Change what though?  It's close to the team I would have chosen.  Molomby for Livermore is hardly and improvement and the only other option would be TGH for Reach.   Robbo or Grady or Grant are all much of a muchness at the moment.   Dara will come in for Semi.   What else??

It's over to Bruce to try and get the best out of this bunch.  And good luck to him.

Reach in CM, yeesh

Your alternatives are Molomby or TGH neither of home are creative.  It's the remaining weakness in the side. Reach has shown flashes of quality amongst the dross.

A tweet I saw sums it up pretty well in my opinion, he’s probably not the man we want but possibly the man we need. Appointing someone like Carrick would have been admitting promotion is out of the equation, Bruce is a safe option as he could potentially rejuvenate the squad and help get us promoted, if not then he’ll either get one more crack at it the year after or will go in the summer. I think our problems are much more than a manager at this point to be honest.

Probably my quote of the day. Experienced with a history of success in this division AND keeping teams up.in the top flight.   What's not to like.

Tended to play 4141 / 451 at Newcastle, can't see him playing 3 at the back, not in the long term anyway.

At this level a back four permed from Furlong, Kipre, Townsend, Reach, Bartley, Dara, Clarke and Semi should be more than adequate with a bit of protection in front.  No, it won't keep clean sheets like the back five Val had in place but we lost so much in attack from using that formation it should balance out.

Now I think VI's approach was largely to blame. He just didn't want us to play through midfield, look at his Barnsley team. Everything about his approach was built around kicking it long and pressing from there - % football it used to be called by Bassett and Gould. In this system a midfield is there to chase and harry more than it is to pass.

If we have three midfielders in there (one holding) and two linking up (Mowatt and TGH for eg), it could completely change the way we play and I think and Mowatt in partciular would come to life and we'd maybe even get a goal or two from midfield (I hope).

VI just made his and our life so difficult for 'ideological' reasons it was maddening. Bruce for all the criticism he's getting has had a long career by being pragmatic and working with what he has instead of 'template football'.

Totally agree here.   If you watched Mowatt from day one his first instinct was always just to get it forward, harry and press.  That was the job of the two and in that first month he also looked like a potential goalscorer from midlfield.  However, playing alongside Jake in a two meant he was having to cover a LOT of ground and i think it both frustrated and took the edge off him.   The Millwall game really highlighted this, Val said he had compromised and overcomplicated things, i took this as going back to his core principles, he did and it was horrible kick and rush football.

For me, if Jake has a role now it needs to be in a holding midfield position.   Cover the back four, and simple passes forward.   Then, lets see how good TGH is alongside Mowatt who can be the one breaking the lines.  We don't have a creative midfielder, but then MP's don't come around very often and we were lucky to have him get us over the line, so we are reliant on one of Grady, Phillips or Robbo to offer that bit of creativity or beat a man.  We know that Grady and Phillips at their best can beat an man, and we've seen Robbo pick some lovely passes through this season. What the new manager is inheriting in additiona is a potentially powerfull forward line.  I'd love to see Carroll and Grant play as a two up top whilst we await Dike's return.

So yes, its not the best midfield in the division, but when Val went through his "compromise" phase we did play some decent football on the deck.  The issue was that almost every move led out wide and the delivery and finishing just wasn't of the required quality.    Rinse and Repeat!!  Hopefully the new manager will have the coaching craft to mix it up a bit and i think the players will (initially) respond to having a bit more freedom.  I am confident that in the Summer the club will address the weakness in midfield ans its something Val was looking to address this window, but it was scuppered by the injury to Dike.

Is there a better candidate out there (realistically- no/minimum compo) than Brucey?

Nope.  But he's not young and upcoming (Val), sexy and foreign (Slav), or has a history at the club (Big Dave).

All he has is a wealth of experience, including multiple promotions and management of basket case clubs.

So booooo.  Brucey out.

That's it, isn't it? Short term, no interest in long term future of the club. Do you think Bruce is interested in WBA scouting? Anotehr journeyman off the carousel ready for his next paypacket. Then rinse and repeat.

Errmmmm. Val was completely invested in the long term future of the club.  Four years long term. Bruce's job will be to coach the team for a few months not build infrastructure.

It can't help the lad knowing if you start a game you will get hauled off after 60 mins no matter what or you are on the bench hoping to come on at 60 mins.

I don't think that should be an issue.  Just means you work your backside off whilst on the field.  He just looks like he's lost confidence in both his own ability and fitness    Needs to be given license to hug the touchline and beat a player without worrying too much about the other stuff.

I'm sure I'm repeating my opinion, but I reckon he feels lost - a London lad who was sold the three amigos mirage must wonder what the flip he is doing in Smethwick being a bit part player at an imploding club.  New bloke + a bit of TLC is what he needs.  He is a proper winger, he's not Willie or Laurie, but I still hope he can do great things soon.

I'm not that bleeding heart by the way, I know he has a well padded income above the dreams of most to soften any troubles he has.

But still a human being and a kid really.  Money doesn't stop you feeling like sh*t that your parent club ditched you, pulling your hammies on a regular basis and missing home if your a London lad.   I've wondered if a loan back to one of the London clubs might be an idea for next season.

However, ideally i hope he does some maturing over the next12 months, gets properly fit and happy with his body and flourishes under a new manager.

I rather like the idea of Grady supporting a front two of Dike and Carroll :)

It hasn’t all been the manager. This isn’t a good squad - no goal scorer, immobile midfield, defenders who lose markers and make basic mistakes. Several players who have consistently proved themselves inadequate yet are still here, while better ones have been sold /given away and replaced with inferior ones.

But VI has made a mediocre side stink the place out.

Good coaches make teams better; this one has made things much, much worse.

There has been no sign of improvement. No chinks of light. The trend line has been remorseless for months.

Down. And out.

I'm now here.  It feels like he is coaching them against there instincts and they hate it.   You can't do anything well if you hate doing it.    It won't get better.

The manager and board may believe it can be turned round, but the players and fans have lost ALL belief in this manager.  Shame.

It only works when we play with real intensity as we did first ten minutes.  Once that drops we just look like a pub team.   I've been behind him, given chances, but it's gone.

The owners are desperate for this to work, which is why I thought he would be given the season, but this just can't continue.

Excellent news. Don't suppose there's any chance of shifting the other lump or the one that's in the kennel?

Ken has zero interest in actually playing football from what I've seen.  He's happily working his way through Netflix box sets and watching his bank balance grow.  We really should be touting him around the continent, maybe somewhere close to a beach? Might provide some motivation to move.

That is excatly why people that genuinely hear things dont bother passing on information anymore as it's a thankless exercise.

Yep.  By all accounts Wilder's pen was almost touching the dotted line when Lai pulled the plug and gave Dowling the heave ho instead.  I have no doubt that the point where the info was passed on it was correct.

I'm personally gratefull for the little nuggets of ITK info, even if they are sometimes wide of the mark.  But then I'm bored working from home so anything to distract is very much appreciated.

I think you're referring to a member of this forum who was passing on something he'd been told by a (normally reliable) contact within the club.

IMO, he passed the information on in good faith, he has also passed on information which turned out to be correct.

I'm not sure that information passed on in good faith deserves a cynical response.

I think the contact within the club had been told that Val was being called into an extraordinary board meeting and may have jumped the gun a little.   The meeting part was undoubtedly correct but the outcome was plus one Andy Carroll rather than minus one Valerian Ismael.

Of course, there may have been a discussion over Val's future as well, but he came out on top.

I remember that game well. AC had no answer to Jonas.

Saying that he's scored more goals against us than anyone else apparently with 7 goals.

Jonas may not have been the complete footballer but he was 6"5 of utter Swedish shithousery and AC just had no idea how to get away from him.  He wont face many defenders of Jonas quality over the remainder of this season.

I haven't seen this reported anywhere. It was reported (?) that was what he was on at Reading, but he rejected staying with them.
I can guarantee it will still be a damn site less than Big Ken is getting for sitting in his pants at home.

He’ll be gone either way in a few weeks. Hope will return.

Dont kid yourself. He ay goooin nowear.   Just been given a new lump to play up front until Dike comes back.

If he was going would have been the morning after  the Preston  debacle.  Would appear the board has got his back for this year at least.

Seems odd that we'd stick with a 4 year plan now, even when it looks like it might mean a sustained stay in the Championship, yet we ditched Bilic pretty quickly and threw out his plan.

Some really interesting thoughts/ITK posted in this thread earlier today on why Slav was jettisoned so quickly.

It genuinely felt like it might happen today after the fans reaction last night. But FWIW once Massi confirmed Val was taking the press conference tomorrow my gut feeling said here for the season!

Probably cheaper to chuck another striker at the problem than pay him and his team off.   The fact there is only one home game in the next month might have also been a consideration.

All well and good but it's a different ball game compared to last season. I am starting to wonder how much the lack of a crowd and five subs helped him. There's even a few in that thread saying they got well and truly found out in the POs.

As for the comments about being top six not bottom six... anything lower than 4th would be our lowest league finish for over 20 years. No one is too good to slide down the leagues but we rightly should expect better.

I watched the play offs and although I was initially taken aback by the intensity at which Barnsley played I do remember thinking that Swansea managed them pretty well and came out easy winners even though it was only by the odd goal.

I guess the presumption was that Barnsley fell down at the semi final hurdle due to that lack in quality, which the Albion would have.  Maybe they actually got to the play offs because they didn't have supposed quality players but instead players who were willing to follow orders and buy into the vision for a chance at success.

Who is Faal, one of the subs?

Closest to a number 9 we have in the 23's but very young (18) and raw indeed.

Perhaps we should all respect each other’s opinions a little more. Because that’s all they are - opinions.

We all want our club to do well. I’ve had almost 50 years of (mostly) disappointment but I keep coming back for more.

I’ve gradually shifted from being optimistic about Ismael to the opposite, mainly because of results and performances over the last several months. I’m afraid that view hasn’t shifted with three late goals at home to Peterborough. That’s my honest opinion, and it has built up over time rather than through the odd result here and there.

What will start to shift it positively is if the team follows up with some more positive results and performances. This was Ismael’s third win in almost three months - 3 wins in 11 games isn’t great, and we’ve failed to score in 5 of them.

I think he has the worst squad we’ve fielded for 20 years, and that’s not his fault. I cut him slack for that - I don’t think we have any right to expect automatic promotion, but we are better than the poor results and performances have been since he had such a good start in the first ten games.

So it’s about trends for me. If his next three or four results are as poor as the last three or four before today, that keeps the trend line going down. We won’t stay in the top six with the results he’s achieved over the past four months and good coaches don’t tend to make teams worse.

If he starts to get top 6 results over the next few weeks (and he needs to if we’re to stay in the top 6 for much longer), then he’ll start to restore some of my confidence.

But I’m afraid three late goals against probably the league’s worst team - welcome though it is - is not enough to persuade me that Ismael has turned the corner. It took quite a lot of poor results to turn me negative on Ismael, and likewise it’ll take quite a few positive ones to restore my belief.

That’s an honest opinion. I entirely respect that other people may see it differently. But one result isn’t enough to swing the pendulum either way on its own for me.

Pleased with the result, but not anything more than that for now.

Shockingly balanced and sensible post.  I would look forward to seeing your opinion more over the next few months.

Reach and Mulumby were bought in by Val.
Bought in whilst he was manager.   They both scream of Albion recruitment team options.  Do you really think he arrived at the ground with their names scribbled on a bit of paper?   These are the ones I want!!!  Both were cheap and available, I'm sure Reach has been linked with us before.  It wouldn't surprise me if Molomby only came to the club's attention whilst arranging the Clarke deal.

Gayle's a pure finisher , through balls are his game . Not lofted punts or long throws to be brutally honest .

We have got a LOT of crosses into the box with no one making runs.   Gayle would make more of those runs.

And I really don't think lofted punts is representative of the way we've played the last few months. That has become an oft repeated but not necessarily accurate narrative.

Only J Rod would sort of fit now , agreed on Dike .
Feel for him already to be honest , huge pressure.

I'm with Dave, all three would fit very nicely thankyou.  Barnes with his pace and power, JRod as the focal point and Gayle coming in from wide, like Robbo but a more natural finisher.

Tbf Barnes was head and shoulders above anyone else I saw in the division that year.  Formation irrelevant, just get the ball to him.   I thought he was an England regular in waiting, suprised he hasn't had more opportunity, but I digress.
