Touch, control, awareness all fantastic, even maradona had off days.

There's nothing technically brilliant about anyone in this league, the standard has never been so poor.

Swift is a slightly above average Championship player who is fine for a top 10 team which is all we are now.

Bruce won’t last long with his idiotic team selection.

It’s the clubs inability to offload players that’s as much a problem as anything. The entire back line needs binning off. Comments from Bruce at the end of last season suggested that was happening.

I think we should have kept hold of Sawyer's last summer then alternated the midfield between him, Livermore, Mulumby and Mowatt and TGH.

Has we done this we may have been in a better position to not automatically trigger options on Livermore and Mulumby's contracts as they could have all been used sparingly.  We could have then been in a position this summer to have room for 3 new midfielders.

As it stands if we keep Sawyers then there is no room for any new midfielders knowing full well we need more dynamic players in there.

How can 99% of the fan-base be agreed on a player and our football experts/business management team get it so wrong?  It's was criminal incompetence to extend his contract.

I know it will be difficult, but for me, he must be sold in the summer for free and we might have to also grease the wheels to encourage him to go. He'll do better elsewhere (for 6 months) and we can move on to mentally tougher and more consistent players.

Please Albion, stop wasting our money!

I doubt he will be sold, very few teams can pay transfer fees since Covid. I doubt anyone would match his salary either meaning we are lumbered with the wages.

It's probably a good job we aren't getting promoted this year as there would be a promotion bonus dished out as well.

Didn't suggest they would get promoted.  It just seems odd that so many of us are critical of the players and consider them mid-table quality that when we get a result against a team at the top of the table it's still full of anguish on here.  If we really did think that mid-table was about where we should be then we shouldn't be annoyed at results like this.  It's like slating the players for playing to their actual abilty.

Personally, I think the players are capable of much more which is why it's more frustration than anything.

With the exception of Fulham nobody in this league is really any good and they won’t survive in the Prem either.

Too many players running around in circles earning too much money and contributing nothing.

Diangana and Grant were signed in the hope that they would make a mark in the Prem, now they barely lay glove on anyone in this league either.

OK, we've got a new Manager.  So who in the squad will break out of their shackles and thrive under his coaching/management?

Diangana?

Mowatt?

Grant?

Would love to see a fit and flying Grady again.

Only Grant out of that lot.

Billic and Allardyce got nothing out of Diangana last season and Val got nothing out of him for half of this season.

1 thing to note. If Bruce does get us promoted he gets a lovely 2.7M bonus and triggers another 1 year deal on top of his 18 month contract. #WBA

Bruce and his 18 month contract.

There's a break clause in the deal when the season ends for us both to parts way's with no compensation needed to be paid to Bruce.
It's a win win for us, he does well then we'd keep him on.
If he underachieving we'd cancel his contract. #WBA

Is this essentially saying that it is a 6 month deal with a possible year option then?

If there is a break clause in the contract from either side then we will probably be in a similar position to last year when Allardyce didn't want to stay on. This was probably due to the transfer budget which will be the same issue this summer as well regardless of which league we end up in.

Unless I missed it the club didn't mention this at all.

Is anybody not expecting performances and results to pick up once we have Johnstone, O'Shea, Bartley, Mowatt, Dike starting alongside each other? Throw in Grady and TGH alongside that core and we should be a force. Seems pretty obvious to me that we are struggling with the omission of key players are the moment.

Our best team IMV:

Grant, Dike, Robinson
Reach, Mowatt, Molumby*, TGH, Furlong* (*with reluctance)
Clarke, Bartley, Dara
Johnstone

Reach and Molumby aren'''t good enough and Furlong is poor as well.  I wouldn't be expecting much from Diangana either he has been off form now for 2 years.

I'm not much for this manager but looking at the players available to him it`s no wonder the season is in danger of coming off the rails.

One thing I do blame him for is Matt Phillips new contract, we would have been in a position to offload him at the end of this season.

The club should have gone and got the manager they wanted in the summer instead of settling for 3rd or 4th choice and needlessly having to pay compensation in the procees.

I thought the referee gave Boro most things yesterday. Very poor and to only play 4 minutes stoppage time in the 2nd half was ridiculous with the amount of time wasted by their right back and substitutions. Should have been a minimum 7 minutes.at least.

Agreed he was poor but our own right back wasted about the same amount of time drying the ball with the towel.

Thats it exactly , there's a hint of rugby in these tactics . Its exactly what Barnsley did under Val .

Think this hits the nail on the head.

In this day and age, is there really any need to go out with such tedious tactics? It’s not as though we are playing top class opposition every week and for a club that’s just dropped out of the Prem we shouldn’t be adopting this approach.

Unfortunately the club seems to be stuck in a bit of a cross roads at the moment, the ultimate aim is promotion which is all well and good but what’s the point when we capitulate in that league? There needs to be a sense of enjoyment in football at some point otherwise for me as a supporter it’s just going through the motions.

One thing I will say in Val’s defence is that this is probably the poorest squad we have had since the Gary Megaon days. It comes to something when a free transfer from Barnsley is head and shoulders above anything else we have.

Hopefully in January we address the need for a centre forward and in the very near future Diangana improves.

I’m assuming his new contract is on massively reduced terms in line with what he produces on the pitch?

We could have been in a position to let him leave on a free next summer so it’s a shame really.

Ismael seems to really like him but for me this is his first massive mistake.  If we get promoted we are left in a situation where we have a player who isn’t good enough for the Prem.

I’m assuming we aren’t going to be doing the same with Livermore?

Last time we were in this league we had Austin and Kanu who weighed in with goals and neither have been replaced. Admittedly we didn’t have Grant then but still massively short up top. Someone on Twitter asked Luke Hatfield from the Star and he said there was no indication of that in their interviews so hopefully a false alarm.

I would imagine Kieran Gibbs wages alone cover what we are paying out to Mowett and Adam Reach not to mention everyone else who has been released.

From the 2nd half onwards it was nothing but torture. Does it need to be torture? Grealish not on until extra time, Sancho and Rashford only on for pens. Saka with the way he played tonight on the 5th penalty? It was painful to watch. First half and the other games great but when it really mattered, everything went wrong, so many poor decisions.

Agreed.

My overall view on the tournament is that with the exception of Germany we beat teams who we should be beating on paper.

I don’t think we will ever have a better chance of winning a tournament. All but one game was played at Wembley and we should have taken advantage of that last night, a second goal before half time would have killed Italy off, instead we handed the initiative back to them.

There’s your market folks. £30m for Buendia

I think some are going to need to realign their figures based on that

We will get an opening offer for about half of that and it will drag on all summer.

We should have accepted relegation and not bothered with the investment. It would have put us in much better place for the coming season.

Nigel Pearson was available at that point as well, could have offered him the job with one eye on the new season.

Surprised that Derby are not back in for Lampard, as there is no way they were ever going to sack him. They were a work in progress under him and only going to get better. Its just a pity we can't profit from that and allow him to take us forward as a club instead. Agreed that the move to Chelsea with the big egos there came too early in his career.  I'm sure the football would have been good to watch (I believe he's a 4-3-3 man), there would have been room for flair player(s) and we would have taken the game to the opposition, which ought to be the case for an Albion team in the Championship.

Derby face a possible points deduction next season and also have no money so Lampard won’t fancy that I wouldn’t think.

Anyone know when we can expect the white smoke out of The Hawthorns?  ;D

Transfer deadline day  :P

In all seriousness though I think Nigel Pearson who have been ideal. I wanted him before we got Allardyce.

There are so many variables when it comes to valuing a player like Pereira, it's just not linear comparing him to others. Once you get to a price bracket over £25m, it really is a case of which clubs have a need for thst type of player. Throw in CoVID and how that changes the market and I just can't guess. I think we would be stupid to release him for less than £25m-£30m baring in mind his last couple of months but there will be some difficult decisions for the club.

I mentioned in the last few days the twitter account "the other 14" (a stats based account for the clubs in the Prem outside the big 6).

Outside of the big 6, Pereira has created the 4th most chances of any player. Only Grealish, Gross and Neto have created more.

Remarkable for a team that creates so little.

I’m not sure what the variables are these days though. Wolves apparently
still value Adama Traore in the £60 million bracket despite the fact that he has had an awful season, and Sander Berge from Sheffield Utd is supposedly valued at £35 million but again not sure what that is based on as it’s not shown in their performances,

Personally I think between £30-£35 million is what we should be getting for Pereira although I fear we will receive an opening bid in the region of about £17 million which will eventually go to about £22 million. It will then turn into a transfer saga over the summer but hopefully not in the same way the Berahino saga played out.

West Bromwich Albion FC / Re: Mbaye Diagne
« on: May 04, 2021, 06:58:20 PM »
£8m isn't much, and Diagne has already showed that he can score goals in the premiership, let alone the championship, I wouldn't describe that as an anchor. Allardyce had already made it clear that he will only stay if the board back him, if they try to do it on the cheap he's off. I don't blame him one bit either.

There is better value out there to find a championship goal scorer.

The fee and the wages would be better spent elsewhere.

I’m hoping post covid that the days of big fees and wages are a thing of the past for clubs like us. I think there will be a massive pool of players available to us from the prem that clubs will try to offload and I think players will have to accept that big wages aren’t going to be on offer anymore.

I am puzzled as to why anyone would think that Johnstone would be a sufficient  upgrade on their current incumbent as spend £20m on him when he would be a free agent next year

We won’t get anywhere near that amount for someone who will only be second choice at another club.

I’d love to know the clubs valuation of Pereira if this is anything to go by.

West Bromwich Albion FC / Re: Hal Robson-Kanu
« on: March 04, 2021, 11:12:23 PM »
All about opinions I guess. I see nothing wrong with the Robinson signing, can't see that was an absolute joke.
If we had missed out on promotion then Robinson would have been an adequate signing but certainly not for this league.

He’s had about as much impact as Oliver Burke has at Sheffield Utd.

West Bromwich Albion FC / Re: Grady Diangana
« on: February 03, 2021, 09:04:58 AM »
We certainly won’t make a profit on him based on this seasons efforts and West Ham have a sell on fee as well.

I thought he was going to be our version of Harvey Barnes but it hasn’t worked out for him.  I wouldn’t be surprised if he pushes for a move back to London in the summer with a number of our other players.
