We always seemed to beat the Toons if my memory serves!
Prefer them to Oxford who are an unknown quantity plus we often play badly against lesser teams

Sixth round here we come

First game I saw us lose was home to Newcastle in 5th round in 1974, 0-3. I was aged 7 and was devastated, and cried my eyes out, I didn’t realise that Albion could lose games, how wrong I was! 46000 there I think with about 20000 geordies at the game.

Could have been alot worse. Think Newcastle will make an open game of it which increases our chances.

I remember that game very well. We were in the Second Division and going nowhere under Don Howe; they had Malcolm MacDonald scoring for fun.

It was on Match of the Day and they tore us to shreds, but didn’t turn up when they eventually lost to Liverpool in the Final.

You can see the highlights on YouTube https://youtu.be/rzwTC00ByAI If we think some of our defending is bad now, take a look at what we did that day! Wile and Robertson at the back too.

42,747 officially - far, far more in reality. Largest away following ever at the Hawthorns.

The other time we met them in the 5th round had a happier ending and we went on to win the cup. 61,088 there with 20,000+ locked out.

This tie opens up a bit of a dilemma for me. Either Newcastle (who might rest players depending on their league position) or Oxford at our place would represent a grwat chance of reaching the quarter finals. Admittedly, this isn't the ideal year as there are still a ton of the top sides left, but it does feel like a good chance to go for it.

Then again, we do have some key games around thay period so I wouldn't blame Bilic for resting players and giving Krov/O'Shea/Edwards the start.

Oxford at home v Newcastle will fancy themselves. If we get a home tie we should be targeting the quarter finals

Hopefully by then the Cup team will feature Johnstone, Livermore, Kanu etc. Admittedly it'll reduce our chances of progressing but we should be clear at the top of the league...

Spot on. They didn’t turn up against Liverpool at Wembley, just as we didn’t against them.

It’s very much what I remember Stu. We were in the doldrums in Division Two playing in front of small crowds and it felt a big day with a packed Hawthorns with well over 40,000 inside.

From what I remember we were never really in it. A huge disappointment.

And the team that day included Wile, Robertson, Cantello, Willie Johnston and Tony Brown. More than enough quality to have given them a better game.

Pitch invasion from Newcastle fans wasn’t there? Think the match was ruled void even though Newcastle won and they had to play it again - went to three games in the end if I remember rightly.

It all kicks off around the 6 minute mark. Absolutely bonkers game.

Thanks for posting that. Even worse than I remembered, but you start to forget just what it was like with crowds back then.

They couldn’t complain about the Forest penalty - it’s hard to imagine a more obvious penalty. And they should really have been thrown out of the Cup after that rather than having a replay - I’m guessing they would be today.
