West Bromwich Albion FC / Re: Tony Mowbray appointed as Head Coach

Has he?

Zuvi, Martis, Pele, Barnett, Valero and on and on...

His record was average at best.

There is a lot of distorted nostalgia regarding Mowbray.

He's teams' could not defend then and they can't defend now.

I didn't want him, but I was willing to give him a chance as he had given youth a chance at Blackburn and Sunderland, but I am losing the little faith I had in game after game.

His undying love of Wallace and Swift is perplexing. A dead Tom Fellows is better than Wallace and a dead fish better than swift.

Playing your most potent striker on the left is shocking and bringing Swift on yesterday instead of Price, who has much better dead ball delivery, is tragic.

Like I said before, I am not saying sack him now, but if he fails to get top 6 after getting arguably the best striker in the championship in January, he really has no excuses as it will his lifelong achilles heel of not being able to defend will again be his undoing and I know where my "soft" foot would be going.

Valero was capped for Spain and had a fantastic career. Regarding recruitment, it's unrealistic to think a manager is primarily responsible these days. Price and Bany were clearly scouted before Mowbray arrived—if they succeed, are those his achievements?

Swift has barely played recently, and Mowbray had to give everyone a fair chance. Wallace hasn’t been as bad as some suggest. Fellows was anonymous against Millwall, he touched the ball 3 times and struggled against Blackburn, but that doesn’t mean he’s not a good player—everyone has off days.

Armstrong likely wouldn’t even be here without Mowbray, and if anyone knows how to utilize him, it’s Mowbray.

As for bringing up the past, it’s been 17 years since he managed us. It’s no longer relevant, and it’s time to move on from it

It would have been irrelevant if somebody wanted him as he couldn’t have started work any earlier on health grounds !

In the lengthy interview I watched at his home, he made it clear that several clubs had approached him about the possibility of returning. However, he declined, as he was waiting for the all-clear.

After every game, fans seem to collectively acknowledge that our squad isn’t great – an undeniable truth. Yet, many fail to connect this to the real reason behind our struggles. Middlesbrough are also facing significant challenges, despite arguably having a stronger team.

The constant comparison to CC is tiresome. CC was poached by a bigger club in a superior league; he wasn’t sacked and replaced by TM. This narrative persists only because some fans expected CC to have us at the top of the league. At no point did the owners imply we were underperforming or that CC’s job was at risk.

TM was the best available manager at the time, he's not a miracle worker. Yes we could be doing better, but he's only been in charge 6 games. We have an average unbalanced squad due to years of poor recruitment and ownership. This can't all be corrected in a couple of transfer windows. We still are in with a chance of the play offs and even if we do miss out, I believe TM and the owners vision align and hopefully we can be far more successful next year. The only thing you can do as fans is support him, he's signed a 2.5 year contract, he's not going anywhere anytime soon. Some of the comments about him have been completely over the top.

               Wildmsith
         Ajayi Holgate Heggem
 Fellows                           Styles
             Price Mowatt
    Diangana              Johnston
               Armstrong

Doubtful we'd play this, however we will dominate the ball against Oxford so I'd have wingbacks keeping the width and wingers who will cut in. Every team knows we want to get it down the wings so they double up on the wingers and cut off the supply, this gives us another dimension as we don't have a proper 10 available yet. Price and Mowatt are probably our best technical footballers so I'd play them in the middle as we'll dominate the ball. Big centre backs as they like to play long balls. If we're winning we can bring on Diakite and Molumby to add a bit of bite and presence in the middle.

I like that but would like to see Styles as a 10 to see if he can link the play, my suspicion is that he would do a good job of it

From a left back to a 10 is certainly interesting  :o

Styles career will probably end with everyone still wondering where his best position was. It's a shame as he's a decent footballer.

He will contribute nothing to help us achieve a play off spot and he won't be here next season. There's no point him being here.

I understand the financial arguement, it just irks me when people pretend we've had an amazing transfer window when we've sold our first choice keeper.

Positives:-
- We got a draw at a place we generally struggle
- Ajayi is back and played well after a shaky start
- Dike getting minutes
- Diakite played well
- Bartley is only suspended for 1 more game
- We're somehow still in the playoffs
Negatives:-
- We looked ragged for a lot of the game and were fortunate to get a point
- Swift continuing to come on and stink out the place
- 11 games without a clean sheet
- We haven't won away from home since the Hull game in November

We have a week now until our next game and it's crucial. We have to start demonstrating some improvement. TM has a full week to get his idea across with most of the squad available now, it's another massive game that we have to win.

I thought Diakite was our best player second half.

He should not play another minute for us between now and when his contract is terminated at the end of the season. He was woeful yet again in his cameo today, has no heart or desire, I wish we could get rid of him now.

Bristol concede late on to draw against Cardiff. They would have leapfrogged us if they had won.

Be interesting to see how this works.

We deserved to lose against Blackburn, we needed a shake up and that's what we have.

Hopefully it works.

Great to see Dike back in the squad.

Like Corberan he has a very average squad to work with, that's just a fact, I think people need to lessen their expectations.

We're in a transitional phase and this squad feels like it needs another few transfer windows to get where it needs, there's no quick fixes. Hopefully TM can steer us into the playoffs. I still believe that's possible, although it won't be easy. We should have the firepower in the team to accomplish this now, with a reasonable enough defence, we just need to strike the right balance.

All is not lost, but no doubt tonight was very disappointing.

I just listened to Mowbrays post match interview on WM.

He spoke about the disappointment about conceding from a set piece as we don't do that often. We were a bit fortunate they didn't have a pen before hand so I'm not too reassured by this,  however he's right that we are usually strong from them. We have lost the commanding presence of Bartley and Palmer now so that's possibly a contributing factor. Mowbray said Bartley would have been ideal up against their striker and emphasized how much we missed him making first contact in the.box as well as his leadership. I can't disagree, shows how brain-dead Bartley was getting himself sent off.

Gave a lot of credit to Blackburn for doing a job on us, which in fairness they did.

He spoke about passing it through the lines faster. We certainly were too slow in the first half, we didn't look like creating anything.

Pretty honest assessment, can't find much fault in it.

We seriously need to improve, we won't have Bartley for another 2 games and Ajayi only played 45 mins the other day so he won't be back soon - what are the solutions? How do we get the right balance in this midfield. A lot for Mowbray to fix.

I do think he was poor tonight. We know how good he can be, but we seem I'm unable to find the right balance in our midfield.

Sell your best keeper on the cheap and stick the back up in who couldn't get near him. It never sounded like a good plan to me, but everyone else seemed to think it was.

Anyone who stayed until the end tonight deserves a medal.

The temptation to leave at HT was immense.

Embarrassing performance.

Blackburn deserved the win.

Maybe selling Palmer wasn't a great idea.

FT tonight.

Watford 0-4 Leeds
Norwich 0-1 Preston
Coventry 1-0 QPR.

A shame Coventry won it in the 95th minute, otherwise a perfect set of results for us really .

Scored tonight against Tamworth, although unfortunately for Hartlepool they have gone 2-1 down just before HT.

Anyone know how many games he has to play to activate an extension of his contract?

I hope it's not close so we can finally learn to live without him.

Not sure what the terms of his contract are.

If I had a choice between extending his contract or Ajayi's, I'd choose Bartley. Having said that, at his age and the fact he's probably on a decent wage, will we finally let him go?

The centre back situation is interesting with 3 centre backs all out of contract at the end of the season and the other unsure if he's a left back or centre back. You'd assume we may give Taylor a chance, however we will need recruitment here. Definitely could do with a quicker centre back and one more comfortable on the ball.

Puts our result down there into some perspective!

At least we managed to score and the handball in ours was more contentious  :P

We scored from a corner. Heggem had a forced a good save from one, Grant had a reasonable chance from one.

Molumby had a decent chance from a smart free kick. I think our set pieces improved yesterday, we seemed to have enough of them.

Price was responsible for some of that, but no harm in having a bit of variety. Our team is quite small now so we need to be smart.

Against Wolves in the cup today there were only 3 names who started the QER game last Tuesday- so expect a well-rested line-up on Wednesday.  Good job Fellows and Johnson had an easy day yesterday.

Dennis looked quick and dangerous today, Holgate may be better suited to play against him.

Bartley and Heggem are better against strikers who are big lumps.
