West Bromwich Albion FC / Re: Play The Youngsters

I think we have to play our best eleven until its mathematically impossible to make the play offs. Just imagine Coventry and Bristol drop points, whilst we drop points because we`re treating the games as practice matches.

When he's moved into a midfield position, he's always been effective, turned quickly with the ball and made a good proportion of forward passes.
From what I`ve seen, his passing is no better than the present incumbents, in fact its quite sloppy at times. I think he is more of a ball winner, but what we need, certainly in the advanced position, is someone who can help set up chances and get on the scoresheet himself.

The main criticism from yesterday is that he was slow to bring on Diakitie, but other than that, what other choices did he have? At half time it was obvious changes  were needed to get a grip in midfield, as it was there we were losing the match. The only other unused subs were Holgate, Wallace, Cole and Wildsmith, and as it was midfield which needed strengthening, he had to bring midfielders on. I would argue we were slightly more dangerous second half, but even so, our midfield wasn`t a match for Coventry`s who by then had the game under control.

Me and you wouldn’t be very happy having to play out of position and still cover for players that aren’t bothered/can’t run.
What is his position then?  If it`s supposed to be midfield, what specific skills does he bring for that position?

Honestly I'd sell him for 10m. He is a one trick pony if it doesn't work he is pony. Too lightweight, doesn't score enough either. He is an average winger likely can be replaced for half that fee.
He`s actually the last player we should sell. Seeing as we don`t have a midfield that can provide assists, we are heavily dependant on his crosses and superb cut back passes for a large proportion of our goals. Also he`s `still young, so only going to get better.

It was going to be WLWLW.  It turns out to be LLLWL.
You need to start with a system when your squad is so-so (6-10th) and then elaborate when you've steadied the ship.  If Corberan had had Lankshear and maybe Armstrong maybe there wouldn't have been all those draws.

We didn't have Molumby today and Coventry dominated midfield.  Every team needs a Molumby
I think Molumby is well overrated by many of our fans. Yes, you need to win the ball, but then you need to use it constructively. A lot of the time he lunges in and the ball goes anywhere. How often does Molumby put a player through into a goalscoring position? Coventry showed how a good midfield is able to pass and move, but I don`t think he`d make it into Coventry`s midfield.

Trying to be objective, I thought Coventry played the ball around well and their passing was that bit more accurate than ours. That helped them to dominate the midfield, especially first half, which gave their forwards proper support .Some credit must be given to Lampard. I know a lot of fans think its all about effort and passion, but too many of our players can´t pass accurately, and too many cases where the passing player was on a different wavelength to the receiving player. Unfortunately that happens all the time with Grant, but he`s not the only one. Coventry also worked the offside trap better than we did.

Thought he was our best player today, though that`s not saying alot. Hardly put a foot wrong.

He doesn´t look fit to me. Needs too much time on the ball. That said, we were playing badly long before he came on.

Owner was at the game today, so he will have picked up the mood from the fans.

Thoroughly beaten even if Coventry have probably one of the 2 best sides in the division, we made it easy for them.  We haven`t enough players who are able to pass the ball around accurately.

Watching the goal again.  Price and Furlong don't shut out the wide player.  Mowatt is wrong footed.  Bartley is just ball watching.  It's only Heggem (as usual) who is alert to any danger to try and stop it.
Thought Mowatt could have done better to block the cross.

Coventry are a good side. Very comfortable on the ball and passing it accurately around. We are not controlling midfield so forwards not having any support. Only  Johnston looking capable for us.

Luton win 1-0 at Derby to draw level with them.

We have a pretty good record at Coventry´s existing stadium, won 5 drawn 2 and lost one. Including home games, we`ve won our last 4 games against them.

A draw isn’t terrible depending on Middlesbrough’s result. We would still be three points behind Coventry but with three winnable games to go. I would argue it’s a must not lose.
The three winnable games are against teams fighting for their survival in the division.

Just as well the boss followed my advice and started with Fellows. ;D Seriously, he has a hand in virtually all our dangerous moves. And Johnston another player who runs at defenders. Lankshear gives us something different up front, but strikers in the end need to get on the scoresheet.

Lankshear excellent and lot of involvement
He has given us something different up front, but not getting any help from ref.

Mowbray did the right thing starting with Fellows. Brilliant cut back for Grant, who timed his run into space right for once.

Since we scored, Watford on top. This is far from over. They are winning nearly all the individual duels.

Plus one to more game time for this lad. Appears to have a lot of potential and dare I say it....... lovely soft feet. On that last count alone I'm surprised we haven't seen more of him already given Mogga's liking for technical players.
How many times did Mogga use the phrase "lovely soft feet"? Once? This phrase seems to be thrown back at him virtually every time there´s a discussion about his player selections. Becoming more famous for it than some of Churchill´s or other famous historical quotes.

« on: April 10, 2025, 11:07:00 AM »
I think Grant's best skill is his powerful low right foot shot. He scored several goals with it after cutting in from the left in his first season, but I can`t remember the last time I saw it. He obviously does a lot of work tracking back and covering the left back position, but that´s not his primary task. He needs to set up others with chances and/or get into shooting positions himself. That´s his most important job.

The only explanation I can think of for Mowbray hooking him, is that he wanted to go for it with more attacking players. There again, Mowatt had just got forward into a very attacking position and scored. Funny old game!

First name on the team sheet for me has to be Fellows, with Johnston preferably the second. Certainly not Armstrong in a wide position. Also, Griffiths needs a run in the team to see if he can bounce back from Tuesday. I fear this season has now probably gone, unless more than one team above us has a chronic loss of form.

His comments are baffling. Said we'll win today after Saturday. Constantly talked about us being better than every team etc etc

Strange fellow
I think we were the better team after he made his subs, and abandoned the plan of Armstrong and Grant up top.  We had a much stronger grip in midfield. Then it went pear-shaped for the last few minutes  after Molumbys moment of madness. -
