West Bromwich Albion FC / Tyler Roberts
« on: October 31, 2013, 09:51:56 PM »
Those of us who watched tonight's Victory Shield match between Wales and Scotland must have been impressed with another Albion Academy prospect Tyler Roberts, who led the Welsh line. He often had to plough a lone furrow up front but did remarkably well throughout and got Wales' second goal in a 2-2 draw in front of the Sky cameras. The commentator mentioned that Roberts has been working this week with the legendry Ian Rush, who had been very impressed with the tall Albion lad. There's hope on the horizon...

West Bromwich Albion FC / BT Sport
« on: October 18, 2013, 11:35:48 AM »
The latest Premiership listings for BT Sport show that none of our matches are scheduled to be shown live between now and the end of the year. Newcastle, on the other hand, will have four of their fixtures shown live between now and December 7. Some questions need to be asked in high places.

West Bromwich Albion FC / George Thorne joins Derby County
« on: October 09, 2013, 08:25:14 AM »
Albion are to allow George Thorne to continue his recuperation by joining Watford on loan. A sensible move by player and club.

George Thorne is set to join Watford on loan later this week - with a view to remaining at Vicarage Road until the New Year.
The Albion midfielder has been recovering from a ruptured cruciate, sustained in the Baggies game at Everton way back in January.
He has been undergoing rehabilitation and, following Monday’s under-21 fixture against Reading and a series of practice games, is now nearing full-match fitness.
In-form Albion have plenty of experienced cover in midfield, with Chris Brunt, James Morrison and Graham Dorrans struggling to break into Steve Clarke's first XI.
With that in mind, Thorne will join Watford to enable him to fully recover his fitness. The deal should be finalised in the coming days.

West Bromwich Albion FC / Swansea match to be switched to September 1
« on: August 08, 2013, 08:40:19 PM »
Swansea's double-leg victory over Malmo, completed this evening, means that their match at The Hawthorns will be switched from August 31 to Sunday, September 1. This is because Swansea's next Europa League match will take place on August 29.

West Bromwich Albion FC / attracting new investors
« on: July 13, 2013, 09:57:51 AM »
I am not attempting to argue for or against the case for having a billionaire owner, but it is no secret that JP would happily sell if the right offer came along. Fulham have just attracted such a person 'out of the blue' so I was wondering why it is that a club such as Fulham, with a fortune needed to be spent on bring the stadium up to modern day standards, is a more attractive proposition than Albion which already has a stadium that doesn't need vast fortunes spent on it.

West Bromwich Albion FC / Steven Reid signs
« on: June 10, 2013, 02:31:37 PM »
Steven Reid is set to leave West Bromwich Albion after the two parties failed to reach an agreement over a new contract, Sky Sports is reporting.
The 32-year-old former Ireland international started 11 Premier League games for Steve Clarke's side last season and the two parties were in talks about extending his stay at the Hawthorns.
However, an agreement has not been reached and Reid is now set to officially leave on July 1 when his current contract is due to expire, although it is understood a host of clubs are already looking to hold talks with him.
Sky Sports understands that at least three Premier League clubs have expressed an interest in the former Millwall man, whilst a host of Championship clubs are also keen to take him.
Reid has been with West Brom for three years after joining from Blackburn.

With Billy Jones showing vastly improved form, I expect we will be looking for a younger understudy full back.

General Football & Sports / Man City losses
« on: December 14, 2012, 06:45:33 PM »
I've just read that Premier League champions Manchester City have announced losses of £97.9m for the 2011/12 season.Although the sum is still enormous, the figures represent a significant improvement from the previous season when they lost £197.5m. City reported turnover in the 2011/12 season of £231.1m - the highest in the club's history - up from £150m. Considering we were very unfortunate to lose to a last ditch goal against Man City a couple of months ago it puts our achievements this season on a considerably smaller budget and turnover into perspective. Money is important, but it isn't everything in football.

General Football & Sports / Richie Woodhall
« on: August 02, 2012, 03:36:04 PM »
The star commentator on the Olympics so far has, in my view, been Albion fan Richie Woodhall. His knowledge and expertise in the boxing bouts has been top drawer. What do others think?

West Bromwich Albion FC / Get on Hodgson
« on: April 22, 2012, 07:55:08 PM »
After Roy's superb winning performance today can I suggest that all Albion fans have a few bob tomorrow on a horse called Hodgson, which runs in the 7.45 at Ffos Las. It must win surely ;D ;D ;D ;D

The following article appears in today's Sun: It is an unsubstantiated allegation at this stage but extremely worrying nonetheless.

AN ACADEMY boss at Premier League West Brom has been arrested over allegations of a sex attack on a young boy in the changing rooms.
Respected coach Mark O’Shea, 34, has worked with dozens of young prospects in nearly five years running the under-seven to under-11 groups at Albion’s academy.
But last night the club confirmed O’Shea had been arrested and interviewed after colleagues became “concerned” about his behaviour towards some schoolboys.
They tipped off senior club officials who suspended O’Shea and called in the cops.
It is believed some trainees were uncomfortable that O’Shea showered with them at the club’s Halfords Lane training complex, near the Hawthorns stadium.
O’Shea was arrested on March 31 and questioned about an alleged sexual assault on a boy under 13. O’Shea is on bail while inquiries continue. It is believed they may centre on complaints made by THREE schoolboys.
One furious dad turned up at the training ground asking to see O’Shea and threatening to “tear his f****** head off”.
A father with a boy at the academy said: “Everyone is in shock.
“Coaches at big academies can become Gods to these boys. This is a nightmare made flesh.”
West Midlands Police confirmed: “A 34-year-old man from Sutton Coldfield has been arrested on suspicion of sexual assault on a child under 13 and bailed while further enquiries take place.” O’Shea said last night: “I have no comment to make.”

West Bromwich Albion FC / We've got a new Chairman!!!
« on: December 03, 2011, 03:58:42 AM »
The Sun is notorious for getting things wrong about West Brom, but this morning's edition takes the biscuit. They have named Dan Ashworth as Chairman ;D ;D ;D ;D

ROY HODGSON has thrashed out his plans for the January sales after a meeting with the West Brom board.
Boss Hodgson has been given his budget and is set to target Manchester City defender Nedum Onuoha on loan.
Onuoha, 25, almost joined the Baggies in the summer but Hodgson is poised to return with a bid to take him for the rest of the season.
And Hodgson, who takes his troops to QPR today, has admitted he may look to trim his squad by offloading fringe players as he attempts to guide Albion to safety for the second season running.
He said: "I've had a meeting with the chairman Dan Ashworth to discuss what we will do in January.
"I'm pretty sure the club will do its best and if there's any players we do need we'll be able to do it within the parameters we work with.
"We won't be putting in a bid for Sergio Aguero though, that's for sure!
"All clubs in January will have something of a change-around. There are players who start the season looking to get into the team and when they don't they get a bit disenchanted and want to move on.
"If that happens to us we will be looking to replace them. For the last few weeks we've had as many as 25 players training and you could argue we don't need that size of squad."

West Bromwich Albion FC / Football academies in India
« on: August 24, 2011, 03:07:39 PM »
I note from the BBC website that Liverpool are planning to open football academies in India in a bid to reach out to fans in Asia and beyond. In view of the large population from Asia resident with a short distance of West Bromwich I hope JP is looking at something similar. Who knows, we may also be able to find an important financial benefactor from that part of the world.

West Bromwich Albion FC / Venables' prediction
« on: August 13, 2011, 02:06:00 AM »
Ex England boss Terry Venables is today predicting that we will finish EIGHTH in the Premier League this season. That really would be a WOW if the prediction comes true. He gives his assessment in the Sun.

WEST BROM

ROY HODGSON showed what an excellent coach he is by shrugging off his ill-fated spell at Liverpool to lead Albion away from danger and into 11th spot last season.
I expect him to continue his good work at the Hawthorns in the coming months. He could do with another striker to share the burden with Peter Odemwingie. But the arrival of Birmingham's Ben Foster more than makes up for Scott Carson's departure to Bursaspor in Turkey. EIGHTH

West Bromwich Albion FC / Roy fancies the England job
« on: August 12, 2011, 03:09:54 AM »
The Guardian is reporting a fascinating interview with Roy Hodgson who admits that he fancies taking over the England job after Capello. If he has a half decent season this season then he would undoubtedly be amongst the front runners. DA, start looking for a successor!!

The West Bromwich Albion manager, Roy Hodgson, feels that the next England manager should be English.
Roy Hodgson has said he would like to manage England when Fabio Capello steps down after Euro 2012 but he would need to have the backing of supporters and the media.
The West Bromwich Albion manager agrees with the Football Association that Capello's successor ought to be English and, as one of only seven Englishmen managing in the Premier League, he would, almost automatically, feature on a shortlist. Indeed he could be expected to do so prominently.
Hodgson, though, knows how difficult it can be in a top job if there is the general perception that you are not the right man for it. He took over at Liverpool last summer when Kenny Dalglish was the popular choice and, after a difficult five months, he was sacked and replaced by the Scot.
"I would rather hope that, if I was ever going to be offered the England job, it would be with the backing of the important people," Hodgson said. "That would be the media, who represent the fans and, of course, the fans. Otherwise it's very difficult for anyone who takes the job because, even if you've got the competence and you are maybe the 'right person', you need to be perceived as the right person. And the perception of my Liverpool appointment was not right and, as a result, you end up paying for it.
"It [the England job] is not something I go around thinking about. If I get the question, I try to deal with it. I'm perfectly happy working as a club coach in the Premier League. If the day arrives when I do get invited to talk to the FA, I will see what happens then."
Hodgson enjoys international management and he has previously taken charge of Switzerland, the United Arab Emirates and Finland. "I don't think that, as someone who's managed three nations as a foreigner, I should say: 'It's got to be an Englishman [after Capello],'" Hodgson said.
"But it would be naive of me, having been back here for four years, working and following the debates and getting a feel for the country ... to some extent, it would be very unwise of the FA to go down another route because I'm pretty sure that the country now is in the mood for an Englishman managing their national team.
"I've said that I'm English [and] a great admirer of the English national team. I think it's the most important job in the country for English football. If I can give it serious thought, I would be happy."
Hodgson admitted that he had gone to Liverpool "on the back foot", having not been "the fans' choice". But he was reluctant to row over an old story and his focus is on the new season at West Brom.
Hodgson said the club had proposed a contract to the midfielder Owen Hargreaves, having met him on Tuesday and had their doctor, Mark Gillett, examine his suspect knee, the state of which led to Manchester United releasing him at the end of last season.
"We made it clear, 'Look, we've done the test and we agree with you that the knee is OK and you can play football,'" Hodgson said. "And, of course, if you'd like to come and play for us, that would be lovely. Whether or not our offer is going to be interesting to him, that's what I don't know. I think he'll play for someone."

West Bromwich Albion FC / Only one keeper
« on: July 11, 2011, 02:05:40 PM »
I notice from the 26 man squad named on the OS for the three games in the USA that there is only one keeper - Myhill. I thought it would have been prudent at this stage of the season when injuries can occur unexpectedly that we should have taken Luke Daniels as well. Could it be that we will be flying over a new signing this week?

West Bromwich Albion FC / Youngster signs
« on: June 16, 2011, 10:00:59 AM »
IT has been quite a week for Danny Barrow after completing his move from Plymouth Argyle to West Bromwich Albion.
The teenager from Braunton is used to international football having played for Wales under-17s in the European Championships.
Next month his passport will be needed again as West Brom start pre-season with a youth tournament in Hungary.
Barrow, who attends Braunton Community College, is the latest young sports star to receive a grant from the North Devon Sports Foundation.
Here, the 15-year-old tells of his his pride in wearing the Wales shirt and his hopes of emulating another left-footed Welshman.
What have been your main sporting achievements so far?
Being called up for Wales under-17s by Brian Flynn at the age of 14. I'll always give 110 per cent for my country.
What is your most memorable sporting moment and why?
Representing Wales against England in the Victory Shield at my family's home town of Haverfordwest.
We beat England 4-0 in front over nearly 3,000 fans and it was live on Sky Sports.
What is your ultimate aim in sport?
To follow in the footsteps of Gareth Bale, playing for Wales and playing in the Champions League.
What sport clubs do you represent? West Bromwich Albion. Previously Plymouth Argyle, Chivenor Soccer School and Braunton FC.
Do you take part in any other sports?
Athletics, 100 metres.
What do you plan to use the North Devon Sports Foundation funding for?
It will help pay for kit and travelling to matches
Who is your sporting hero and why? Gareth Bale is the player I look up to mostly because he's Welsh, he's a really good player and I'm left-footed the same as he is.
He can defend, he can attack, he can finish and he can cross a ball. He's got everything.

West Bromwich Albion FC / Europa place for Albion?
« on: May 16, 2011, 09:27:04 AM »
EUFA have awarded the Premier League an extra Europa League place. It means that if we finish in eighth position, which is a possibility if we win at Newcastle, then we could be playing in Europe next season. Amazing...
