Here's the blurb

Albion have completed the signing of experienced defender Erik Pieters on a one-year contract.

The 34-year-old, who represented the Netherlands on 18 occasions earlier in his career, has enjoyed club spells at Utrecht, PSV Eindhoven, Stoke City, Amiens and most recently Burnley, who he left at the end of the 2021/22 campaign.

Pieters has played in the Champions League and the Premier League and boss Steve Bruce believes his experience will be crucial both on and off the pitch this season.

He said: “Erik has trained with us for six weeks or so and has proven a high level of fitness and clearly remains a very good footballer.

“He has been a top-flight player for a long time and we’re confident he will be a good addition who can offer us further depth in more than one defensive position.

“The fact he is up to speed and has put in so much hard work behind the scenes over the past few weeks will benefit all involved, and he is ready to play as soon as we need him.”

Pieters added: “It means to a lot to have signed here. Everyone knows I have been a free agent for a little while, so I have been working really hard at home to keep myself in shape.

“I now want to prove myself and show what I still have in me. It’s down to me to prove that I’m worthy of being signed here and that I still have what it takes to play at this level of football. I’m confident I can do that.

“I’ve really enjoyed being here. From the first day I walked in the lads have been great with me and I’ve had a really good relationship with the manager. I feel really at home here.

“I still love the game. When my body is telling me that it can’t handle it anymore then that’s when I’ll have to think about what the future holds, but I still feel great. I’m ready to go.”

Interesting that he been training with us for 6 weeks. Not impressive enough for us to tie him down earlier, or a sign of thorough due diligence…. ?

This hopefully!  Means he's fit and good to go and we don't have to pay him for weeks and weeks for no reason.

A sensible deal!

If it means Townsend being eased out of the side then it is a good move.

Starting to look stronger on paper with Kelly and Pieters at full back and Rogic into the midfield.

Might as well ship Ashworth out now if possible. No point him playing another U23s season.

If I had been asked at the start of the transfer window If I would have been happy having Kelly and Pieters in on short term deals at their age to play as back ups I'd have probably said no. My preference would have been to give the likes of Ashworth and TGH minutes and this business does look like blocking their development - a bit Lee Peltier/Tyrone Mearsesque.

Understand why Bruce has done it with the shallow squad as it is, but I'd have preffered just the 1 really - probably Kelly - as the average age of our summer signings is now 28/29.

Pleased to hear Bruce say this is the end of our business until January. We are better to reassess then and keep a bit of money back.

If it either gets Townsend to perform better happy days. I think if memeory serves he scored a belter v us for stoke?

1 year is sensible. I hope the club in summer make the right calls on some of the old boys whose deals expire.

Welcome Erik. Good luck

I think that is some part of the thinking behind the signing.

He did, a last minute smash from outside the box. Gayle got both our goals.

Agree a 1 year deal is sensible.

Or he was training with us so we could assess him with a view to signing him if our number one left back target fell through? Not in the know.

Has Champions League experience with PSV Eindhoven, where he was always a more solid defender than one showing much attacking flair. Remember him playing against us, when he wasn't shy about sticking his boot in,  which I think has earned him his share of cards over the years.  Just hope his legs haven't gone.

Leave Bartley at home, start with 10 and we have a better chance of winning..

I’m sure Bartley wasn’t in Ladbroke this afternoon…but

Thought he looked solid and his passing was good. He should be nailed on to start at Norwich.
