West Bromwich Albion FC / Re: Action For Albion/ Potential Takeover
« on: February 12, 2024, 06:34:45 AM »
All this Farnell/Hearn stuff seems to be mainly coming from themselves, typical self-aggrandising tyre-kicking fantasist behaviour. It would be really interesting if there was any word from the Albion side of things as to the validity of what the Farnell group are coming out with, personally I really doubt it.

Hearn was never mentioned with Farnell at the start of all this, it was purely Farnell and the alleged Egyptian businessman. For my money Farnell has got wind of the Hearn/Warmfront link and attached himself to that to add some kind of tenuous connection to the club to make his "group" seems more legitimate.

I just hope all this doesn't distract from real buyers.

I'd urge everyone to have a read of this:

https://thecharltondossier.com/chris-farnell/

This isn't somebody I want associated with the club, the only relief comes from the fact I doubt very much they would pass the owners & directors test

As a counterpoint to all the negativity (and personally I'm not particularly inspired by this appointment), a good friend of mine worked for a key supplier of the Albion for a few years and had a lot of dealings with Mr Miles.

He has always spoken very highly of him and found him to be well respected within the club. When he heard the news he was pleased and feels it's a good appointment.

Given this is the first time he's played at this level in his career I think he's doing pretty well. One thing I like about him is he seems vocal and to command his box much better than previous incumbents.

« on: December 09, 2022, 10:44:31 AM »
It's not the end of the world I don't think, he is a perfectly decent championship defender IF he's used in the correct way, our problem is a succession of coaches that just haven't done that, and Bartley isn't the only one to suffer for it. I trust corberan to use him correctly.

The only problem will come when corberan is poached by someone else and we get in another boring journeyman manager who starts Bartley every game because of his "experience at this level" but we'll worry about that when we come to it  :D

(Villa get a Manager in three days FFS!)

Thats because they actually planned ahead and decided Gerrard was going sooner than later..........we on the other hand  "ok Steve lets see how its goes for the next few games then again after the next few games!!"
and months later here we are still in the mire

They also have significantly more money than us and are not shy about throwing it at whatever problem they think they have. It'll be interesting to see if it works this time!

I'm struggling to see the advantage of appointing Schumacher rather than continuing with Beale for the time being. Beale is the "tracksuit coach" most people seem to want, he knows the players, I know it's at u23 level but he has actually achieved something with them winning the cup last season. He seems keen to utilise and develop our youth within the first team. What can Schumacher offer over that? Some short term success with a League 1 side?

« on: October 08, 2022, 06:51:07 PM »
The reason he is still here is very simple - we don't have the money to pay him off. He will remain in place until we reach the rumoured break clause in Jan (I really hope that clause is in place).

Ron is probably glad the atmosphere around the cub is horrifically toxic as it might force Bruce to walk.

« on: July 26, 2022, 03:11:57 PM »
I do like Robinson and he's contributed way more than flipping Burke would have over the same time period!

However, I can't work out his best position.

He's not a striker, doesn't have the right skill set at all for me, can't hold the ball up, not a finisher.

He's not a winger, his crosses aren't great and he's not great at dribbling or beating his man.

He's not a number 10, passing is not good enough.

Also he can't take corners or free kicks.

So where do you play him?? We've not got much better players in every possible position and he's too soft/inconsistent to be an impact sub or cover.

« on: March 14, 2022, 10:42:05 AM »
I really don't see the point in playing Johnstone anymore, it's clear he doesn't want to be here next season and is phoning in his performances. I would much rather us give Button a good long run in the team to assess whether he's worth offering a contract to.

We need to start preparing for next season, playing Johnstone doesn't help us do that.

To be honest I've written off this season, really not bothered if we go up or not so I'd be happy with morrison until the end of the season just to steady the ship while we sort out the structure above Head Coach.

Then you watch Mozza get us up via the playoffs, abliging us to make him permanent and then crash and burn in the prem AGAIN lol!

I flipping love Val, to turn us around in such a short space of time after the misery of last season and the general malaise about the place takes something special.

We actually have an identity, we attack teams, we impose our style on them, we try to score goals! Love it. It looks like the players love it too.

West Bromwich Albion FC / Re: Karlan Grant
« on: August 24, 2021, 08:45:13 AM »
I wanted to give a mention to Karlan on his showings this season. After the dabacle of last season I feel like he's really hit the ground running and taken to Valball really well. Couple of assists and a goal already, I know it's the championship but it highlights to me the fact that I think he was used wrong last season. Just looking back through this thread the coments on him being best on the left and not an out and out centre forward really ring true.

I think he's going to be a big player for us this year, probably won't be our top scorer but he'll be important no doubt.

I've got mine today, in t shirts I'm usually somewhere between a medium and large, I've ordered a large shirt and it fits me well. I'd say if you are usually a large it would be too snug and probably go a size up. Not sure if that helps!

Just a thought: could any muslim player wear a shirt with an old testament psalm written on it?  What are they thinking!

Not an expert by any means but I always thought there was a lot of crossover with the abrahamic religions i.e. Judaism, Christianity, Islam. Jesus is acknowledged in Islam and regarded as a prophet though not as important as Muhammad.

Bhuddists might be a bit non plussed mind.

It should really be more offensive to me as an atheist but I just take it as a tradition of the club rather than having any religious intent in this context.

I'm really pleased with this appointment, it makes a nice change to actually go for someone on the upwards curve of their career rather than the downwards!

A big bug bear of mine over the team for a good few seasons now has been the apparent lack of fight in the players. Too often in big must win matches they just don't have the fight in them to get a result and the opposition always look like they want it more. I can forgive a lack of technical skill but a lacklustre attitude is just so poor in a professional sportsman.

I have high hopes Valerien can turn this around, even if it takes a bit of time. I think we have a very interesting season ahead of us!

SKY have ruined football in this country. It doesn't matter how much money they plow into the game, as most ends up in the hands of the players and their agents. At the end of the day, having the extra millions doesn't buy you better players, as the market reflects the amount of money washing around. You just pay even more for an average player. I read the other day that Leicester pulled out of a loan deal because the player wanted 300k a week. It's utter madness. Look at Villa last season - Where did spending 100m get them?? It's all relative. We spend 75m, Man City spend 500m. The gap will never close now we have mega rich billionaires on the scene. It's no longer a sport in the purist form. It's who's got the cash to splash. And whats the point of having League 1 & 2 - What do they aspire to?? I couldn't really care less about football anymore - having it rammed down my throat almost every night. And to be brutally honest im not too fussed about how WBA get on, because whats the point? All SKY do is promote the top 5 or 6 clubs. The rest are literally just making up the numbers.

Totally agree with all of this. Absolutely no interest in football outside of Albion and that's more tradition than any enjoyment I get out of it (except beating the dingles constantly - Ha!).

As for our current state, to be honest we still have some way to go to approach the absolute nadir of my Albion days which is Alan Buckley buying Grimsby's worst players and delivering an astonishing 11 straight defeats. My first season was 93/94 so I missed the drop to the 3rd tier.

As useless as Lai is I wouldn't swap him for Tony Hale or the state we were in then. At least we have a training ground!

I just find it interesting reading about how terrible the club is and it's such a low point, and this mythical "Albion way" of playing.

Having started following Albion in 1993 we are a long LONG way from Alan flipping Buckley buying all the worst players from Grimsby and that record losing run, or Brian Little's frankly abject reign. How about selling Kilbane from under the managers' nose, he was much more of a key player and first teamed than hegazi.

Sir Gary Megson is still lauded for his achievements and rightly so, he will always be a hero to me but I don't remember much of the "Albion way" the season we went up.

Owners come and go (not as often as we would like) managers come and go, players come and go but WE are Albion.

For the record I liked Slav a great deal and I was desperate for him to make something click, but it's clear that wasn't going to happen.

I'm not particularly a fan of Sam but I'm prepared to give him a chance and see what he can do. Personally I don't think our squad is as bad as people (including Slav) made out so I'm hopeful of some improvement.

Can anyone remember us binning a manager and announcing the replacement on the same day before?

One thing you you can say about this is at least they haven't dithered about for weeks with a hapless caretaker. Still I guess some will still complain but hey ho, might as well make the best of it. I'm no huge fan but it really could have been worse.

Well in that case let’s look at him if we return to the Championship. At the moment we are Premier League and Allardyce is the best person available to keep us there.

I don't disagree, I'm not as averse to Allardyce as some are. I'm just tired of the same old names going round and round.

Utlimately football is broken at a fundamental level and this merry go round will continue every year or so. Ho hum.

Regardless of the wisdom of sacking Bilic if we need a new manager then it's Paul Cook for me. Not sure he or anyone would keep us up but we know he can do well in the championship.
