February "what a month, how many points will we get?"
« on: January 02, 2019, 10:04:21 AM »
(I put the Leeds one in as its as big, if not bigger then the others & only a couple days out)

West Bromwich Albion   - Middlesbrough               H Sat Feb 02 2019 15:00

Stoke City                    - West Bromwich Albion    A Sat Feb 09 2019 17:30

West Bromwich Albion   - Nottingham Forest         H Tue Feb 12 2019 20:00

Aston Villa                    - West Bromwich Albion    A Sat Feb 16 2019 15:00

West Bromwich Albion   - Sheffield United             H Sat Feb 23 2019 15:00

Leeds United                 - West Bromwich Albion   A Sat Mar 02 2019 15:00

I can't remember a month of matches with so much make or break, 1 big local derby & a couple of localish derbies but all 6 games that could directly affect the top 2 & play off places.

It'll be tough but I can't wait, bring it on.

I think we will come out of it with between 10-12 points (that prediction may change as we get towards the end of January  ;) )

I'd expect a couple of those to be re-scheduled for TV

I was always hoping we could get through the holiday period without losing any ground on Leeds and Norwich. We've done that even though we've taken only one point out of six. We've had a particularly gruelling time with Sky messing us about and a hectic Christmas / new year period on top of that and as we all know we do not have a young squad.

From now on the schedule shouldn't be quite as tough and I expect to see us kick on. In some respects the season really starts against Norwich, now is when we have to perform.

Livermore missing is a blow but we should have Hegazi back and hopefully Gayle. Hegazi is IMO (I know some will ridicule me but I'm ready for that) the best central defender in the Championship and when he doesn't play it hits us hard (1-4 v Derby, 1-1 Sheff Wed, 1-2 v Blackburn).

Mason Holgate arriving is huge for us if he plays at right back because he improves the team going forwards as well as defensively and takes the strain off Phillips a bit down the right hand side of the pitch. Holgate may not be Gibbs but he's much better on the ball than Tosin and I expect to see him get forward more often. Tosin is better suited at centre back and I'd rather have him as first cover for Dawson and Hegazi rather than the hapless Bartley.

Gayle, as everyone knows, gives us goals.

I'd still like to see a permanent right back come in during this window and an attack minded midfielder.

Yes it is, if we get past Wigan, the 4th round is the same weekend as we should play at QPR so having a good cup run will mean a backlog of games that have to be shoehorned in near the end of the season.

West Bromwich Albion   - Middlesbrough               W -- All out attack

Stoke City                    - West Bromwich Albion    L  -- New manager will sort this lot out

West Bromwich Albion   - Nottingham Forest         D -- Must win our home games but i think we will have one eye on the villa

Aston Villa                    - West Bromwich Albion    W -- No way would I think anything other than this

West Bromwich Albion   - Sheffield United             W -- Another full house and the ground will be buoyant after beating the villa

Leeds United                 - West Bromwich Albion   L -- Pay back and the crowd will be up for it at Elland Road

10 points. However I think we have an easier run-in compered to those around us.

I would revise those forecasts now, with Barnes gone.

We need 9/10 points really from that lot.
Whether we get that depends how we deal with losing barnes

Losing Barnes will affect us badly as we have very little creativity when he's not in the team.

I'm feeling pessimistic tonight. I think we'll get one win (Forest) and draws against Sheff and Stoke. I think we'll bottle the villa game, Leeds and Boro will both sneak a win.

Looking at things now, I'll be happy if we stay in touching distance of the top two places by the end of Feb, we have a decent looking run in (tempting fate, I know, the way things go we could beat Leeds 4-1 again and then lose at home to Hull/Rotherham etc)

Agree, a tough run coming up. As long as we have lost no more ground following the next 7 matches I will be satisfied, though perhaps we can do better than that.

I think we will win 3, draw 3 and lose 1 for a 12 point return. That will keep us well in touch with a run of relatively easier matches afterwards to push for a top 2 finish.

QPR was moved to Feb after this thread was started, as will the vile be if we beat Brighton next week.

Sorry - it wasn't meant as a criticism but more to highlight the critical run of games which you had done anyway. Lets hope for lots of points and if we are still in the mix after that we will be well set up.

No worries chap  8) I think you're right, Feb will be a massive month, those set of fixtures could literally make or break our season but with the new signings, we've got to push on & hopefully make a big statement of intent on the pitch this month, starting with battering pulis tomorrow.

Who knows, the weather might intervene, as it did in season 1975-76, but only this time to our advantage. Fingers crossed if it does

Gutted with the result today. Individual errors cost us as we got Pulised. We could all see it coming a mile off.

With the QPR game we've still got 6 games in the next 28 days (excl Brighton). For my money we need to be looking at 4 wins to keep pace with Leeds and Norwich. We've got a favourable run in and I back us to pick up a lot of points in those remaining games.

The worry is that if the gap is 7/8+ points it'll be too much of an ask to catch them for automatic. Next couple of games against Stoke and Forest are big but I quite fancy us - both have new managers and neither have hit the ground running. Great opportunity to take some momentum into the Villa game in 2 weeks.

We now need to show we've got Barnes, Boro and Brighton right of our systems and play sound positive football the next five games (including Leeds) on Mar1. We won't win them all, but if we can keep in 3rd or 4th with a couple of wins and a couple of draws, we will be in fair shape for the final run in.

Yeah I agree, I think we need 8/9 points from the remaining 4 games this month to stay in touch with the top 2, back to back wins on Tuesday will set us up to go & get a result at the vile.
