Not a penalty in a million years, awful decision. Wasn't a free kick either.
Regardless of whether it was deliberate or not, the defender affected the direction of the ball.

Doesn't matter. The rule clearly states that the hand ball must be deliberate which it clearly wasn't.

Regardless of whether it was deliberate or not, the defender affected the direction of the ball.

For clarity, Rule 12 “Fouls and Misconduct” regarding handball, whether inside the penalty box or outside it as I understand it, is laid out below.

No mention of affecting the direction of the ball

HANDLING THE BALL

Handling the ball involves a deliberate act of a player making contact with the ball with the hand or arm.

The following must be considered:
the movement of the hand towards the ball (not the ball towards the hand)
the distance between the opponent and the ball (unexpected ball)
the position of the hand does not necessarily mean that there is an offence
touching the ball with an object held in the hand (clothing, shinguard, etc.) is an offence
hitting the ball with a thrown object (boot, shinguard, etc.) is an offence
The goalkeeper has the same restrictions on handling the ball as any other player outside the penalty area. Inside their penalty area, the goalkeeper cannot be guilty of a handling offence incurring a direct free kick or any related sanction but can be guilty of handling offences that incur an indirect free kick.

Hand moved down to ball definate penalty so called correctly

Tbh, he's coming down from the air so his arm is reverting to a natural position - I don't know anybody who when their feet hits the ground following a jump still has their hands in the air

The player who flicks it on is right infront of him giving him no chance to move his arms accordingly

That the referee thinks that is a deliberate handball is quite frankly ridiculous

Regarding the penalty there's some massive points in my opinion.

1. Players are constantly defended when jumping and the ball hits their hand when it's raised. Rightly so as it's natural.

2. In this instance he has deliberately moved his arm to the ball. Actually bringing his left arm to the ball by his side. You notice the movement of his right arm, there was no movement.

3. That cross was going into a very dangerous area of the penalty box, whilst likely it would have been cleared by the next Croatian defender, anything can happen in those situations.

The movement of his let was totally unnatural if you look at the zero movement of his right.

If that was in the middle of the park it would be a free kick all day long. No arguments for me, penalty.

Acid test for me is whether I'd have thought it was a pen' were it against an Albion or England player.

Penalty.

Likewise I thought Antoine Griezmann should have been booked for 'manufacturing' the free kick which led to the French goal.

Croatia best footballing team in the competition. France deserved winners, strong throughout the team and with the pace x-factor of Mbappe.
