West Bromwich Albion FC / 20 years already
« on: April 13, 2022, 07:42:11 AM »
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/eng_div_1/1923756.stm

20 years gone so quick and yet some may argue we’re no further forward than we were then.

One of the best moments in modern Albion history.

I’ve watched it a thousand times and still a little part of me expects him to miss.

Happy Balis day everyone!

I am sure I read that the club had opted out of iFollow and we'd have our own service should we get relegated.

Anyone heard anything about this at all? Any idea's on what platforms it'll be available on?

West Bromwich Albion FC / Psychology (fans and players)
« on: July 19, 2020, 09:07:34 AM »
Friday night hurt. It hurt because there was an apparent lack of effort from the players.

However at full time it was clear that some of the players also felt hurt.

Fast forward, and that hurt moved down to London and as if by magic Albion fans have gone from resigning themselves to playoff misery to potential party in 24 hours.

We all deal with disappointment in different ways and when it comes to Albion I try and find the funny side and make awful jokes. Friday night Bilic stated that he was concentrating on the play off and couldn’t see Brentford slipping.

Mind games, or just dealing with disappointment?

So what is the mindset of the players currently? Excited and grateful for another chance or whatever happens, happens?

Most fans I’ve spoken to appear to see this as a second chance and excited to give it another go.

Will we see a more relaxed display on Wednesday?

This psychology stuff is all very interesting.

General Football & Sports / The FA Cup set to be renamed

FA Cup set to be renamed in £30m Emirates sponsorship deal

The Football Association is believed to be on the verge of signing a £30m sponsorship deal that would mean its showpiece knockout competition being renamed the Emirates FA Cup.

Following a year without a sponsor, after Budweiser declined to renew its deal and talks with a replacement collapsed at the last minute, the deal would boost the FA’s revenues and leave its commercial team free to negotiate secondary deals.

No contract has yet been signed but discussions are believed to be at an advanced stage.

The deal is expected to be worth around £10m a year, compared with £9m a year for the Budweiser deal, and would justify the strategy of the FA commercial director, Stuart Turner, in holding out for a better deal. The FA’s new chief executive, the former United Biscuits chief Martin Glenn, arrives at Wembley next month.

But while the deal with Budweiser was styled as “in association with”, the new agreement will see the 144-year-old knockout competition rebranded as the Emirates FA Cup.

The FA is likely to point to the fact the competition was known as the Axa-sponsored FA Cup as a precedent.

Members of the FA’s commercial team are believed to have travelled to Dubai to finalise the deal.

The move may not prove popular with those who feel the competition has been devalued by shifting kick-off times and brand tie-ins, but commercial income is vital to the chairman Greg Dyke’s plan to refocus the FA’s purpose and invest more in grassroots football.

Budweiser was enthusiastic at the outset of its three-year deal but decided against renewing as a title sponsor, preferring instead to sign a lesser contract to become the official beer partner of the FA Cup until 2018.

Similar deals are in place with William Hill and Nike and the FA is targeting a total of six secondary partners.

An FA spokesman said on Tuesday night: “We remain in discussions with a number of parties regarding FA Cup partner opportunities.” The full FA board meets on Thursday, with the deal expected to be on the agenda.

The Emirates deal, which will run for three seasons from 2015-16, will ensure that the FA’s major broadcasting and sponsorship deals are largely tied up until 2018.

The broadcasting deal with the BBC and BT Sport, seen at Wembley as having helped increase the competition’s profile, also runs until the end of the 2017-18 season.

Emirates Airlines, which already sponsors Arsenal’s stadium and shirts as well as various other clubs around Europe including Paris Saint-Germain, recently decided against renewing its Fifa sponsorship. It is expected to be replaced as a top tier partner of the scandal-hit world governing body by Qatar Airways.

The Premier League is also looking for a new sponsor. Barclays is not expected to renew its £40m deal beyond the end of next season and talks with the Diageo-owned Guinness as a replacement were stymied by individual club sponsorship deals with rival beer brands.

West Bromwich Albion FC / Downing, Kiely & Kelly Released/ New Coaches
« on: January 02, 2015, 08:59:46 AM »
So over the last few weeks most fans have been dissecting the clubs structure and one topic that keeps coming up is Downing & Kiely.

At the Stoke game Downing in particular came in for some stick and the general feeling was that these two were part of the problem and not part of the solution.

End of last season Downing & Kiely were credited with keeping us up as Pepe Mel was left out to dry by the club.

So where do these two sit? Were they/are they part of the problem?

Can we see them staying on under Pulis?

Personally I think a clean sweep is needed but not confident that will happen.

West Bromwich Albion FC / The club structure
« on: December 29, 2014, 10:33:09 AM »
Why is JP so loyal to this structure at the club?

He loves his head's of departments and I am not sure why.

Is it because it removes him from direct blame?

Or did the Megson era scare him so much that he wants to make sure that any manager isn't too big that it questions his position?

Is the structure working, has it worked or have we been lucky?

Any thoughts?

West Bromwich Albion FC / We know what we are!
« on: February 02, 2014, 12:02:31 PM »
Relegated!  ;)

Seriously though I think a small section of our 'fans' set us all up for a fall 18month ago with this song.

We were punching well above our weight while Villa were below where they should be.

The positions we are in now is probably a true reflection of where both teams should be.

The only concern for me is the fact we are on a downward spiral with players who seem (on previous results) to lack any bottle.

Do we have the type of players for a relegation scrap? I don't think we do.

As I say we are where we should be given our spending power (or lack of) but given the circumstances I do think we may struggle.

I can't help but feel we're repeating the great surrender season.

General Football & Sports / Artificial Atmosphere
« on: October 22, 2013, 04:47:41 PM »
I have heard today that Utd have installed microphones in there 'home end' and will pipe the 'noise' into other area's of the ground in way of improving the 'Atmosphere' during home games.

I can't confirm that this is 100% true (as i have only heard it from a season ticket holder) but it does seem something that they would do there.

I'm all for creating an atmosphere but an artifical one like that, i don't agree with.

How far do you think is reasonable to help with an atmosphere at football game?

West Bromwich Albion FC / And so it begins......
« on: August 09, 2013, 03:29:04 PM »
So it seems the keyboard warriors are out in force today (sign it's the school holidays) and are planning 'protests' against our chairman.

What these 'protests' entail is anyones guess!

We've just finished 8th in a league in which as a kid I never thought we'd ever be in let alone compete yet it ain't good enough for some is it?

No wonder JP describes us as a mid table Championship clubs with 'fans' like these.

Charlton fans started similar things to 'push on' and look where they are now.

All I say to these people is be careful what you wish for!

I refrained from posting about this the other day as It got my goat.

After our last home game the bunch of clowns at WM tried to blame the fans for the Odemwingie situation. They were also saying that it was 'small time' for us to have a banner in honour of Wolves relegation. They went on to criticise the Albion fans for lack of class due to the fact we were 'singing about them all game'.

I know they do it to get a reaction but how do the BBC get away with such bias towards one team?

I remember when we were relegated to the Championship and they dropped our games quicker than you could say 'dingle'.

This time they will 'continue to support' the Wolves through league one.

The only good thing about that station is that guy Ritchie who is actually fair and consistant with his questions to fans and doesn't seem to let his loyalties to Albion get in the way too much, although I did have to laugh the other week when he was outside Villa park (when it looked like they could be going down).

As for the other stations that are 'on offer' it seems there is a real lack of quality for decent, fair and impartial local football coverage in this area.

I enjoy listening to phone-ins and the Tom Ross one is ok, except that it isn't in FM and the adverts wind me up something rotten, hence why I listen to the WM ones.

Is there a market these days for decent radio coverage?

General Football & Sports / Sky & BT sport for next season
« on: May 10, 2013, 09:04:28 AM »
Not sure if this is the right place so if not please feel free to move it :)

I noticed yesterday that BT are offering BT sports 1 & 2 and ESPN free to all there broadband customers for free.

Having looked at it in more detail you do require BT vision which is an extra £5 a month for their standard service.

So next year BT sports 1 & 2 will offer 38 Premier League games, while ESPN will continue their FA Cup coverage and their american sports coverage.

BT sports + ESPN is available on BT vision (obviously) on Sky (around £12 for Standard and £15 for HD to be paid seperate to your sky bill). However, no agreement has been made to show it via Virgin Media (yet).

Does anyone think this is good for football or is it business as usual?

With the next lot of contracts for games to be up for grabs in 2015 do you think BT will be able to obtain more games?

West Bromwich Albion FC / The great Jeff Astle

11 years on Saturday since his passing.

Don't want to get into all the politics of the club and what they do or don't do for there past greats but thought it nice to have a place to share memories of astle.

I'm not old enough to remember him play but I remember him doing fantasy football with skinner. He came across as a genuine guy who liked to show off in front of an audience.

I also have the memories of my late dad who spoke of him fondly and the living room recreations of some of his goals.

There is only one king of the brummie!

West Bromwich Albion FC / What a day that was (DVD)
« on: January 09, 2013, 11:00:07 AM »
Back in 2002 I bought the above titled VHS tape from the club shop. It was extended highlights from the Crystal Palace game and also Bradford Away.

It had various interviews etc and some dressing room footage aswell.

I think there was a small sketch from Aynuk and Ayli on there too.

Does anyone know where I can get hold of a copy on DVD?

The clubshop don't sell it so wondered if anyone had an old copy knocking around or knew of a shop selling them.

That's assuming it was released on DVD of course.

General Football & Sports / Rangers
« on: February 13, 2012, 04:03:24 PM »
http://news.stv.tv/scotland/west-central/297387-rangers-to-go-into-administration/

Rangers have filed court papers signalling their intention to go into administration.

STV can exclusively reveal the Ibrox club lodged the notice at the Court of Session in Edinburgh at lunchtime on Monday.

It is understood the papers are the first step in any formal administration process. They now have ten days in which to declare administrators have taken over the running of the Glasgow-based club.

STV understands owner Craig Whyte, director of operations Ali Russell and board member Andrew Ellis had a meeting with manager Ally McCoist on Monday to inform him of the news.

HM Revenue and Customs guidelines state: "The appointment of the administrator will take effect within ten business days of the date the notice of intention is filed."

This period allows the company to speak to creditors to see if they reach an agreement. If they enter administration the Scottish Premier League champions will automatically be docked ten points.

Rangers FC are currently awaiting the result of a £49m tax case with HM Revenue and Customs in relation to the club's use of an Employee Benefits Trust to pay players and staff. It is thought the decision to lodge court papers means the result of this tax case is likely to be known imminently.

The First Tier Tax Tribunal confirmed the decision in the case against Rangers has not been published, although it could not confirm whether or not the club had learnt of it ahead of it being released publicly.

The Court of Session confirmed to STV that papers signalling the intention to appoint administrators had been received from the club's solicitors acting on behalf of their directors.

Rangers are expected to make a statement to London-based Plus Stock Exchange about their intention to go into administration on Monday.

The club was suspended from trading shares on the stock exchange after failing to file audited accounts on time earlier this year.

Last week former chairman called for the Insolvency Service to investigate the financial arrangements at the club following Mr Whyte's takeover last May.

Mr Whyte confirmed recently that he had used four years future season ticket sales to secure a £20m loan from London-company Ticketus.

The 19th of this month will mark the ten year anniversary of the passing of the King.

During his ten years at the Albion he made 292 apperances scoring 137 times (Wikipedia).

Although he is not Albion's all time leading goalscorer his goalscoring record was first class and scored some of Albion most memorable goals. The biggest one being the FA Cup final in 1968, in which he was the first player to have scored in every round of the cup.

I never got to see Astle play but have fond memories of him with Skinner on Fantasy Football League recreating (Phoenix from the Flames) that famous goal against Leeds as well has his many singing attempts.

I thought it would be fitting if we post memories of the King here as I am sure everyone would love to read about them.

This bloke was a real gem and will be missed greatly by fans of all ages.

I am sure he is up there now having a kick around with my old man and many others we have lost over the years.

The Hawthorns will be singing his name this weekend I am sure.

RIP The King

General Football & Sports / Landlady vs Sky
« on: October 04, 2011, 09:20:16 AM »
Pub can use foreign decoder for Premier League games

A pub landlady has won the latest stage of her fight to air Premier League games using a foreign TV decoder.

Karen Murphy had to pay nearly £8,000 in fines and costs for using a cheaper Greek decoder in her Portsmouth pub to bypass controls over match screening.

But she took her case to the European Court of Justice.

The ECJ now says national laws which prohibit the import, sale or use of foreign decoder cards are contrary to the freedom to provide services.

The decision could trigger a major shake-up for the Premier League and its current exclusive agreements with Sky Sports and ESPN.

"In practical terms, the Premier League will now have to decide how it wishes to re-tender its rights," said sports media lawyer Daniel Geey of Field Fisher Waterhouse solicitors.

"There can be little doubt it will have contingency plans ready to go and has various options available.

"Be it a pan-EU tender, selling in only certain EU member states or devising a plan to start its own channel, they will be deciding how best to maximise the value of their product to ensure any revenue shortfall is minimised."

However, the ECJ did add that while live matches were not protected by copyright, any surrounding media, such as any opening video sequence, the Premier League anthem, pre-recorded films showing highlights of recent Premier League matches and various graphics, were "works" protected by copyright.

To use any of these parts of a broadcast, a pub would need the permission of the Premier League.

The findings will now go to the High Court in London, which had sent the matter to the ECJ for guidance, for a final ruling.

West Bromwich Albion FC / Reid the new boo boy?
« on: August 15, 2011, 07:36:55 AM »
A few comments from yesterday in and around the ground:

His legs are gone
He can't run
What was he doing for the second goal
My nan is quicker than he is
He made young look like a good player
Etc etc etc

He won't be playing against the likes of young week in week out so I am not too worried however we do need to find a replacement in the next 12 months I feel.

Anyway since he who shall not be named left, we've been without a 'boo' boy for those certain few at the hawthorns.

I am worried that Reid is that guy!

I'm not going to say the usual get behind your players etc because it didn't work the last time.

I just don't understand why certain fans have to have a scapegoat for everything.

As a side note I heard people also saying that foster is no better than what we had before  :o and based this opinion after just one game!  :-X

To those 'fans/supporters' who booed/abused etc Scott carson during games.

I hope you're happy with yourselves now as it looks like carson is on the way out. You've got what you wanted. He is going and looks likely he won't be in goal for us next season.

Just a question, whose going to be your next target?

Thanks for your efforts Scott, you wasn't the best while with us, but you certainly wasn't the awful keeper some made you out to be. I said that a move away would be the only way to get him back on track with his career.

I hope he proves people wrong.

Please let's not see a repeat of the carson bashing with someone else next season as it's not needed.

Thanks for your time :)

Rant over!
