We're supposedly not offering them much upfront, so it's hard to see how we're going to be able/willing to satisfy their need, which probably explains the endless impasse.

I think it totally explains the impasse. Another club only has to better our initial payment to be accepted should Huddersfield be as desperate as reported. We're reliant on Grant digging his heels in over coming to us. Not a great place to be in.

It doesn't matter how many resources you have.
If you don't know how to use them, they will never be enough.
Oh, and always remember to defecate on those Vile chaps in claret and spew.

Does he specifically want to come to us or just play in the Premier League?

Interesting, although there has been 1 or 2 very similar articles in recent weeks, which have then been rubbished shortly after.

There's an REM lyric that goes 'I'm pushing an elephant up the stairs'.

Sums us up at the moment.

West Brom are closing in on the signing of Karlan Grant from Huddersfield Town with talks at an advanced stage between both clubs. #WBAFC #htafc

Here's hoping this is true.

Yes, we need at least one new striker but £14m for Grant seems way over the top; we do have a record of paying way over the odds for players, though, Burke and Zohore come to mind. Much rather we went for Armstrong.

He's not done too much worse than Ollie Watkins last year and the season before that he got 4 in 12 in the Prem so I don't think we can say 14 mill is OTT.

Our playing it cool cost us more in the end as the fee was previously agreed ar 12m but due to our delaying Watkins went for 28+ so Huddersfield put price up

Watkins is a step up in class from Grant, as sadly, I think we will discover. Watkins is a very mobile player, ideal for playing on the shoulder of the last defender and using his change of pace. Grant has a bigger physique, but looks to be one paced.

Not sure about that to be honest. Grant scoring 19 goals in a bottom of the Championship team was pretty impressive as was a one in three strike rate in the Premier League as a 21 year old.

Watkins' profile is high right now after a hat trick in a freak game against Liverpool but let's see over a period of time. I'd bet Grant's stats show the equal of Watkins.

To me Watkins qualities were obvious well before his Liverpool hattrick. If Grant scores a hattrick against Liverpool , I'll be more than happy to withdraw my comment. Or indeed if he scores a hattrick against anyone. I also think Billic is on the record as saying he rates Watkins highly.

Bilic also said Oli Burke had all the attributes to be a striker.

He also said Harper (in one game) was our best player out of possession.

Complete and utter nonsense on both counts.

Watkins had plenty of suitors before joining the Vile. No one else has been interested in Grant as far as we know. Says a lot really.

I hope he joins as he can't be any worse than what we have but I hope he is followed in by another striker who can give us a different option.

Loan to buy for a total of £14m with most of it guaranteed (albeit in installments) and a little through incentives sounds about right to me.

£18m was too much, and equally £5m up front with him going back if we were relegated was also crazy.

It begs the questions why its taken so long to come up with this completely sensible number though which we will obviously never know.

The problem now is even if (big IF) we agree a package that Huddersfield will accept, we now in danger of another club like West Ham etc.. coming along a blowing our package to the player out of the water and then god knows who will we end up with !

Is Ricky Lambert still mobile?

Inevitable this deal was going to get done. We need the player, they need the money and the player wants to join. Just a shame the EFL transfer window has hung around longer than the PL window delaying the move.

RE KARLAN GRANT:
Understand a deal is edging closer and there's a growing confidence it will be done by Friday. Albion and Huddersfield still negotiating the structure and exact terms of a deal (probably loan-to-buy) but there seems to be broad agreement on overall numbers. #WBA
