West Bromwich Albion FC / Re: Karlan Grant
« on: Yesterday at 04:51:57 PM »
If the stories are true about him having a fitness coach in the summer are true then it’s worked wonders
His work rate is tremendous and he seems to have gained a yard of pace
Whilst he will never be a premier league player he is more than earning his place in the team and is exceeding what I thought we had got
Well done Karlan long may it continue
If we could only get a fit Dike what a front 3 they would be at this level all with differing attributes

I think Cov are a decent team and a most welcome 3 points helped by there lack of finishing
Palmers best game this season for me, commanded his box very well and a couple of good blocks and his kicking was spot on
At the back Heggem had a couple of shaky moments and styles with back post crosses but other than that ok
Midfield is where we lack balance still for me, in playing a front 4 we need more legs in there , a bit of an all rounder , like a mowatt who can run
I like mowatt but my god he runs in treacle but I suppose horses for courses, once swift came on with mowatt we kept the ball better and took the sting out of Cov
Difficult game Saturday I’d actually take a draw 😆

Another miss from Cov, clean sheet will be more luck than judgement if we keep it

Second good block from palmer.
Interesting the dink over our back four is causing us problems, we seem to dally over making a decision just bloody thump it
It’s not pretty but sometimes we are our own worse enemies to always want to play from the back when we are being pressed
Anyway half time, we seem to have dropped off a couple of yards or Cov are playing the ball a bit quicker
If we sit off them I can see them scoring hopefully we come out with more zest
Maja has been disappointing tonight, mowett too other than the goal, Heggem also caught out a couple of times
A game that feels very like the Sheff utd game

Palmer looking more positive from set pieces coming and claiming rather than punching

We look far better with this front 4 but more likely to concede
I can see more goals in this game

I think that they are worthy of their current top spot. Don't forget they were missing their 2 central defenders to suspensions.
And there captain it was a decent time to play them , I think Sheff utd,Burnley and Leeds have the best 3 squads by far
Sunderland don’t seem to be dropping off but 5th and 6th are there for any one to claim although I expect Boro to be in the shake up

If we play the front 4 we look so much more of a threat going forward but it exposes our midfield and defence which better teams will expose
Until we get someone to play alongside molumby who Carlos will play who can run and cover ground and the help the defence our defence will be exposed
Furlong is good at this level but goes to sleep and Bartley will have a game like this every 10
Oh 2-2
A bit of luck goes our way
Makes up for their equaliser

Excellent for 30 minutes
Mowatt anonymous again molumby playing well
Has soon has we conceded Bartley started to have one of those games
Fellows didn’t track the full back for both goals
I think defensively we need Diakite on for mowatt

He’s a neat and tidy footballer with good technique but too similar to mowatt for me
He offers no athleticism or pace and not enough defensively or going forward and for such a big lad no presence
If we are going to see a front 4 of maja/grant/fellows and one other I’d like to see molumby and diakite given a chance for a few games once he is fit again

The biggest problem with this team is the central midfield. We knew it would be in the summer though. To use and old Tony Mowbrayism, we have too many soldiors and not enough artists.

The lack of ball playing midfielders mean that when we are in front, we are unable to control the midfield (and therefore the game) and when we are level, we dont have enough ways to break a team down. All of the burden is on the wide players.

It was obvious for all to see that we lacked a creative central player this summer but the club did nothing to remedy it. Corberan also seems happy to operate with wide players in the number 10 spot (Diangana, Johnston, Wallace), suggesting he doesnt put much weight in having a "foot on the ball" type player and instead being happy with what becomes a hybrid of 442 on the counter.

Corberan is the perfect manager to keep a side like us in the top flight, but without a good creative central midfielder, it feels unlikely that we will ever get there.
Whilst creativity from central midfield is important if we play what is in effect a front 4 the thing we lack most from any 2 of mowatt, molumby and Racic is athleticism and pace
I haven’t seen enough of diakite to see his strengths and weaknesses but he is hardly creative
The fact we don’t really have any box to box athletic midfielders means we get so slowly forward and no one is there to draw players away leaving our wide men with 2 to beat most of the time
Central midfield is the one area we should be strengthening but not with like for like we lack legs in there

Why doesn’t molumby slot it.
Mowatt off, how many poor games on the run does he need to have before he’s dropped?

Need styles on Heggem is struggling, maybe go wing backs to match up with them

Palmer beaten from distance not in the corner but a good strike
Criminal if we don’t win this game after dominating the first half
Similar to the Oxford game , hopefully we can regain some control
