Research on Sexuality in Football
« on: March 26, 2020, 08:15:32 AM »
Dear all,

I am involved in some university research that is looking at sexuality in football and I would appreciate a few minutes of your time to share your thoughts on this subject. The survey is anonymous and can be found here:

Thanks in advance for your time.

Done, good questions.  Really would hate to be the first footballer to come out as gay while still playing.  It'll be super pooh for them from a minority of knuckledraggers.

It would also likely bring a lot of commercial opportunities. If I were a footballer, gay, and towards the end of my career, I’d seriously consider doing it!

They are tackling this very issue on Coronation Street at the moment.

Sadly I have been watching Corrie forever. The storylines were a bit limp and almost comedy, but I have noticed over the past couple of years they have highlighted social problems and issues for which they should be commended.

When it comes to Question 4 I think the answer probably has more to do with the fact that society judges lesbianism and male homosexuality quite differently (and always has done). You're not really comparing like with like.

I prefer Classic Corrie on ITV3 and for that matter Classic EastEnders. Both a million times better back in the day.

In Classic Corrie you can see Reg Holdsworth in his wig. Brilliant. ;D

I also watch it , and as someone who lives in a back street terraced in Manchester,  it does not represent the demographics I see .
There are no gay people in my street and one ginger person,  the pub is dubbed up because of drugs,  and we dont have a wine bar .😊

I honestly believe that the vast majority of fans would be, at worst, not bothered or, at best, fully supportive. It would be a very small minority that caused a fuss but we would likely all be tarred with that brush.

We can't completely demonise banter though as I firmly believe that it can be divisive to do so. If I'm out with mates and the only one we can't take the mickey out of is the gay one then that is singling him out. Needs to be a balance or the PC crowd will make the situation far worse.

The funny thing about the questionnaire is that when you mention that a few of the women's football team are gay or bisexual, no one is bothered in the slightest, in fact I think a few of our homophobic friends on the terraces will find that quite a turn on....what a weird world we live in.
