Wigan placed in to administration.

Is that a 15 point deduction, which surely means  relegation?

Forget Wigan beating Brentford, that’s a kick in the teeth to the players after their recent form.
Don’t think deduction is that high maybe between 10 and 12 for first offence ?

10-12 I think. So they definitely need to keep winning.... starting with Brentford ;D

Think they may need more points to stay up if they get deduction for administration

I wonder if there's any chance of them not being able to fulfil their fixtures?
That way when they take off all the points we'd be 2 points more ahead of Brentford and 2 points closer to Leeds

My understanding is that there is a "get out of jail free"  clause for unusual circumstances...  COVID may well be considered unusual.

So the EFL may waive or greatly reduce the points deduction

Doubt it. Last thing the EFL need. They’ll carry them through if they have too. They’ve got Robinson and a highly rated young England forward I think, both of which will get decent fees so have some ability to raise a bit of money.

It's a 12 point deduction, correct. However it isn't being applied straight away. It will be applied at the end of the season should they finish outside the bottom 3. If they were to finish in the bottom 3 anyway, then the deduction comes into effect next season.

Puts them on 38 points but they still have a chance of escaping relegation with the form they are in. I fancy them to get a result against Brentford now.

I don't think they'll be docked points. They'll point to the 'force majeure' clause and argue it that way. Think the EFL will bend to that, otherwise there will be an awful lot of teams docked points in the weeks ahead, either for this season or next.

Rooney is a class above at championship level.

The EFL official statement on Wigan

 https://www.efl.com/news/2020/july/efl-statement-wigan-athletic/#.XvyAiEcA7gw.twitter

If the club is relegated (without the deduction) they will start next season with a 12 point deduction in League 1.

If the club survives this season without the points deduction will be applied and their league position will be adjusted which could of course relegate them.

I am assuming the rule is constructed in this way to stop clubs who are hopelessly adrift at the foot of the table from going into administration to get it out of the way without meaningful impact on their prospects.

Hard times ahead for Wigan but the recent run of games has quite possibly saved the club as it would have gone from bad to worse.

They’ve a fighting chance of staying in the championship even with the deduction this season. If they do drop, they are at least they've got the deduction out the way.

unless of course they throw in the towel and finish the season horribly

Horrible thing to say but very good news for us in the immediate short term. They play Brentford on Saturday and Fulham last day with games against direct relegation rivals Hull Barnsley and Charlton in between meaning it's still in their hands. They don't need to rely on other results.

Before the deduction threat they were absolutely safe.

Sad for Wigan, but I still think of them as a large amateur club. They were a kind of northern equivalent to my local club Wycombe Wanderers. They made it into the Football League about 12 years before Wycombe. I see that they've been around since 1932 so they are not one of those founding professional clubs, and some would say Wigan is basically a rugby town. I'm sure they'll survive in some form.

They have punched above their weight for a long time and fair play to them for it, been Up there about 6/7 times and always a cracking day on the beer although the game this season was very strange. The streets were completely empty walking to the ground and you would have no idea there was a football match on and the ground itself seemed basically empty like it was a reserve game.

Hopefully they pull through

I remember when they got to the semi-final of the League Cup and they couldn't even muster an attendance above 10,000 if I remember rightly. Just isn't a football town.

Derby have 5 wins in 5 games now. The most on form team in the division since Christmas and looking likely to be the side that wins the play offs (provided Brentford aren't there).

All on the back of signing Rooney.

Really don't want them to get promotion after the shoddy way they have done business with the stadium.

Are Derby in trouble for a points deduction along the way?
