How interesting, thanks for posting. I am surprised you choose to highlight Gibbs. An excellent player in my view and a cut above anything we have in that position now.

Late to this thread, gibbs in my view would never have signed for us if he was anywhere near fit most of the time. We bought knowing he’d play about half the games at best.

Anyone remember that lad we had on loan, Jerome boure or something like that, big tell striker. I think he’s died now.

Didn't he lose an eye in an incident?

Don't remember him at all. Wikipedia says no one is really sure how he died. How odd.

Died in 2007 Jerome boere

lost an eye before he died -

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeroen_Boere

In May 1999, after dinner with his wife at a restaurant in Roppongi district of Tokyo, he was stabbed in his left eye and arm by two unknown men who reportedly appeared to be of Middle Eastern origin.[2] His attacker was later reported to be an Israeli criminal who was later found shot through the head in a Bangkok river.[3] Boere lost his eye in the incident, which forced his retirement from football at the age of 31

Please may I squeeze in Richard Chaplow? Don't know why we signed him. Rated himself highly although he looked like a child to me and was regularly injured.

It's up to you mate but you might want to rub some lube on his head before trying  :o .......... lots and lots of lube  ;) .

I remember when Chester ran out for his debut. Alongside Pullis other land of the giants back four he looked tiny.  I said at the time, no way is he playing CB for us.  Looked shell shocked to be involved with Pullisball.

We had been a graveyard for ageing pro's long before GMac arrived, but it was Uncle Roy who saw what he could bring.  Story is Dashworth took Roy to see another Ipswich player but it was GMac that caught his eye even though they conceded four.  Top man.

I'd stick Anelka in this list.  He signing still feels like a fever dream.

Bit of fun, Take a look at this page:

https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/west-bromwich-albion/alletransfers/verein/984

Who stands out as the biggest WTF/forgot we signed him? signings from this list

I’ll start with a big name:

Kieran Gibbs - was with us for 3 years and I’ve just erased him completely from my memory - was he any good?

Varela - winger from Porto

James Chester - If I remember rightly he was solid for us but played at RB instead of CB by Pulis and he didn’t like that.

I completely forgot we had Samaras for a while!

Blimey we've had some disasters  :) :)

There’s no way of objectively measuring this but I wonder where we would be in a league table of winners and losers in the transfer market?

My day job is fund management, buying and selling shares for pension funds.  That’s a zero-sum game.  For everyone who makes a good decision to sell there is a bad decision on the other side when someone buys.    We all try very hard using data and forecasting to pick winners but everyone else in the market is doing the same.  It must be similar in football.   When we uncover a hidden gem it means that someone else on the other side has probably done a bad job in either developing that player’s talent or properly managing their career to get proper value for them in a sale.  In short, all clubs can’t “win”.  Everyone is trying to play their own version of Money Ball- looking for undiscovered potential or older players with plenty left in the tank but all can’t be successful.  When I look at the players we released on free transfers, I can imagine fans of other clubs saying “why the bloody hell did we pick them up??”

I would put Kanu up there. One of the most talented players I've seen here but was a very strange signing for a Megson side. I remember watching his debut away at Blackburn and seeing him surrounded by the likes of Bernt Haas, Ricardo Scimeca and Geoff Horsfield. I still can't believe he agreed to join us.
