Your Favourite Ever Season
« on: April 07, 2015, 10:30:35 PM »
What is your personal favourite ever season?

It has to be the first promotion to the Premiership for me, it was just full of unforgettable moments. Forest, Sheffield United, Bradford & Palace to name but a few!

Also the '93 Ozzie Season was amazing for me.

78/79/80 winning at OT 5-3, champagne football, winning games, the 3 degrees, queuing up with 6000 others at Anfield certainly was the era for me aged 16/17 boyhood dreams almost!

First Premier League promotion for me. That will never be beaten....ever. The Wolves implosion and us closing the 11 point gap was in the script.

I'm really torn between the 92/93 and 2001/02 seasons. The 01/02 first promotion to the Premier will NEVER be beaten again, it still to this day makes me feel so emotional and brings tears to my eyes thinking about it. After all that though, 92/93 shades it slightly for me. It was like my coming of age season I suppose. I was 16, my first season of going regularly away on my own, great atmosphere everywhere we went, terracing at every ground, the penultimate season of the old Brummie Road. The Brummie was electric that season. It was magical. Who could forget having over half the ground at Mansfield and again on the amazing gloriously sunny afternoon at Chester, the 3-2 away at Exeter, coming from behind, the 2-1 away at Hull with Darren Bradley's lob from 50 yards in the last minute, the brilliant beachwear party at Rotherham. The two games against Wycombe in the 2nd Round of the cup are also lodged firmly in my mind, Bobby Gould climbing the ladder to the T.V. gantry in the televised 2-2 draw in the first match, us giving him so much abuse I thought he was going to fall off! The replay, 1-0 win with a late Super Bob goal, over 18,000 in the ground for a 2nd round replay! Boing Boing really took off that night. The Chester game at home on Boxing Day in the fog, couldn't see Paul Raven's goals at the Smethwick End from the Brummie. So many vivid memories and a wonderful reminder of when football was last truly the game we love. If I could go back to any point in time in my Albion watching days (1983- present), 92/93 is where I would go.

78-79 season Cunningham, flying down the wing, Cyrille banging them in and bomber , Robison , cantello and willie turning full backs inside out .my favourite was Statham what a player. Evan away supporters enjoyed the way we played. All the players looked like they were enjoying playing for us .Not like the players we have today, half of them are only here for the money or to put themselves in the shop window looking for a bigger club. I'm a silver haired season ticket holder in the smethwickend I had black hair in them days.We should have won the league that season if the bad winter hadn't have stopped us playing and Atkinson put the mockers on our semi- final with Ipswich .

1992-93 felt like such a special year at least partly because of the two awful seasons before it (as well as some pretty general mediocrity throughout the Eighties).  Albion had been a laughing stock for a long time, and reverted to being one for much of the rest of the decade, but that year we really had something to be proud of.  Great season.

Yes, the fact that we had had about 10 years of rubbish (apart from about half a decent season in 88/89) made 92/93 even more special. To come off the back of the Woking shambles and relegation to the 3rd in 90/91, missing out on the playoffs and the sit down protests of 91/92, that season under Ossie was a breath of fresh air. As you say, that was pretty much it then in terms of anything remotely decent until we made the playoff semi's in 2000/01. When you look at it like that and think that 92/93 was the only season with anything to get excited about from roughly 1982 to 2002 it makes it even more of an amazing season!

Exactly the same as you, 93 was the the first ever season i really remember properly and probably when West Brom actually became a part of my fibre and make-up. The first promotion year was just brilliant, expected nothing, great atmosphere and just an amazing feeling around the club.

Nothing will ever compete with this season for me! Bobby Taylor scoring the goal that sealed promotion was the icing on the cake.

We also had a good cup run that year!

In my lifetime (born 85) the club never felt as together, from top to bottom, as it did back then!

Megson may have been a horrible bugger, but he will always be a legend for how he turned us around!

This sums up true football for me, both 92 and 2001 were equally special, but neither could have happened without having to go through the horror of 91. We are lucky to have experienced both ups and downs as you can't truly enjoy one without the other.

All these plastic Man U and Chelsea glory hunters think they are having a great time winning stuff, but when your only real experience of defeat is a shock loss to Burnley every 3 years, the highs will never be as high as ours have been.

A proper thrill ride has ups, downs, twists and turns, not a straight road with the odd speed bump!
Mediocrity is the real anti-football!

I don't wish to be controversial, for I too am a big fan of Bob, but what a shame it is that Darren Moore is rarely recognised as scoring the actual winner.

One not mentioned in earlier posts 75-76 the Giles promotion campaign it didn't start well we only won 1 of of opening 10 fixtures but finished gloriously with a 1-0 win away at Oldham to snatch the last promotion place by a point.

First premiership promotion for me as well. Incredible, especially given the situation with wolves. Palace is probably the only ever non cup game that i've just known we would win. Smashing Man City 4-0 at home in early september, having lost our first three, and with them sat top is still one of my favourite ever games as well.

I don't know if I would put it as my number two, but the season before was pretty enjoyable as well. Even though we lost to Bolton in the play offs, finishing 6th having only survived on the last day the year before and never having made the division 1 play offs was a great season. I think its often forgotten because of what happened a year later but it was a fun following the club that year and generally their was great atmosphere around the place.

The great escape was a great 2nd half to the season, and amazing last day up with the best of them, but i wouldn't say the season over all was a favourite.

Without a doubt 01/02. I enjoyed 92/93 a lot and the play offs were magic. 68 was obviously brilliant. The season we had the best side and played the best stuff is 78/79 but it is tinged with disappointment. How we failed to win anything I don't know. Still angry now how the club managed to blow our chance at establishing ourselves as a top, top side.

Not sure if you would be interested or if you've already read it, but there is a book called Samba in the Smethwick End, written by Dave Bowler and Jas Bains (Wolves fan) that as well as telling the story of that West Brom team, in particular Regis, Cunningham and Batson also describes the reason for the decline in the Albion because of the social and economic climate during the Margaret Thatcher years.

A synopsis of the book can be found here:-

There have been a number of memorable season and nearly all mentioned here so far and rightly so.

I suspect our ages will, to a certain extent, dictate our choice, whether you witnessed that season or were too young or not born will influence each individual.

But for me, like a few others the 78/79 season was the best Albion side I have ever seen and were unlucky not to have won a trophy.

Also some great players with the quality we can only dream about these days and would probably not be able to afford. Happy, happy days  :D

I was going to say the 79/80 season to start with but ultimately that season fizzled out to nothing and I had rather a nasty experience at Liverpool in the Anfield Road end that left a bitter taste in the mouth when ever anything Liverpool is mentioned.

Then I was going to say 93 under Ardilles, went to a few away games as well as all the home games including the playoff semi and the final at Wembley.............but no.

The season for me, even though I am old enough to remember 76 and Oldham under Giles, for me the best season was the first promotion under Megson. I remember that numpty on the radio WM shouting the odds about Wolves fans getting the champagne ready as they had already won promotion with 11 games to go..................Well we had other ideas about that. I went to practically every game, home and away, that season. It started as something intangible, you didn't dare speak about it in case you jinxed it, but each time we won and the Dingles only drew or lost that feeling grew and grew. Who could forget Bobs last minute winner at Forest, Cov away when Man City had already beat them at the Custard Bowl and we scored in the 4th minute to close right up.................AND DONT GET ME STARTED ABOUT BRADFORD !!! What a day that was, last minute penalty when we had missed so many that season. Balis not speaking English so wasn't put off by the delay before he could take the penalty and going totally mental when it hit the back of the net.

Then the atmosphere on the final day at the Hawthorns, still don't know where all those people came from at the final whistle.

So for me, its that year........just the best ever, for me anyway.
