There are loads of comments on forums complaining about out lack of shots on target, but is "shots on target" a good performance indicator?
For example, Sessegnon's shot yesterday went just wide of the right hand post, perhaps 30cm left it would have gone in, but not recoreded as a "shot on target". On the other hand most of Villa's "shots on target" were comfortable for Ben Foster.
Surely, if you're analysing performance, you need to know if you're getting into shooting positions, & therefore "total shots" would be a more reliable performance indicator.
You could then use a ratio of "total shots" to "shots on target" to see how effective you are in front of goal.
I'm not sure that "shots on target" should be used as an argument to demonstrate that we're not getting into shooting positions
