Best managers outside the Premiership
« on: February 26, 2018, 02:44:30 PM »
I realise that we are not allowed to speculate on future Albion managers while we have an incumbent, but who are the best managers to impress you outside the Premiership? It doesn't have to be someone from the fizzy pop league or from a British club.

Firstly the "Premiership" doesn't exist anymore, it is the "Premier League"

Secondly, Lee Johnson, Graham Potter are young ambitious managers that are impressive. If you want someone to get you out of the Championship Steve Bruce is your man. If Villa don't go up this season, I think they will, they are certs for next season.

Not so sure about this one. He took Bristol from top of the league to a relegation battle last season and now this season has took them from a comfortable top 3 side for half the season into one that is looking like missing out on the playoffs altogether, 1 win in 13 games. As others have said, Jokanovic seems by far the most stand-out candidate in the Championship at present.

Those two guys at Salford City scare the hell out of me. SCFC are most definately on the way up.

I know what you're saying! Trouble is though is that they just appear to be a couple of gobshites. That sort of managerial method might work well in the non-league game where a good old fashioned dressing room row is more of the norm, the further they progress up through the leagues the more the different calibre of players they will have playing for them will just take the attitude of "I don't have to listen to being spoken to like that" and tell them to get stuffed or just to stop putting a shift in. If Salford do make it to the football league within a couple of years (they are only 2 promotions away), my guess is that their management team wont be going with them.

Jokanovic is the standout but think Smith, Johnson and Wilder are doing excellent jobs. From further down the ladder Kevin Nolan is somebody destined for better things and strikes me as someone who wants to be a winner

Has to be Gary Rowett and coach Kevin Philips, both at Derby get them if they don't go up.

Please remember that it is against forum rules to suggest replacements for current managers. Discuss managers you think are good, as the thread title suggests. Just don't suggest them for the managers job or talk about their availability as this will be construed as a "suggestion for the job".

Gheorgi Hagi
Mike Flynn

Saw Hagi mentioned in an article about top young coaches / managers a while ago, I think it was possibly from 442.

He's also part owner or chairman of the club he is at though.

What is it about McInnes that you like so much?

For me he's done nothing at Aberdeen, they were always going to become the 2nd best team in the SPl once Rangers imploded and he hasn't done anything in Europe with them.

I like how he talks , what he demands from his side.
I won't claim to know masses about the SPL but I do know Aberdeen were rubbish before he went there and he's turned them around on a shoe string plus they won a cup .
He's one of those that wouldnt quite be your top pick yet you'd be gutted if he was a success elsewhere , as I say there is something about him.

Aberdeen had gone through a poor spell for a few years before he was appointed granted, including a relegation in 2007/8 (I think).

yes he won the league cup in 2013/14.

I can't imagine that he'd be successful anywhere at a decent level. For me he'd be lower Championship at best.

Graham Potter - doing excellent things and seems to have a specific vision and focus.
Gary Rowett - Derby
Slavisa Jokanovic - Fulham
Dean Smith - Brentford
Lee Johnson - Bristol City
Paul Hurst - Shrewsbury
Derek McInnes - Aberdeen

I think he's rubbish.

His record against Celtic and Rangers is embarrassing.

Would be disappointed if he ever rocked up here.

In answer to the original question - Rowett, Jokankvic and Dean Smith are the stand out managers in the championship

Gheorgi Hagi
Mike Flynn
Mike Flynn has done a great job at Newport and who knows he may do a great job elsewhere. It's difficult to say how much of his effect has been down to him knowing the club and players so well and his lively personality. He's one to keep an eye on.
I'd prefer to see one of Rowett, Jokankvic and Dean Smith on the grounds that they are more proven, but whether we could get any of them is another matter.

Slightly confused with this thread, is it the 'best manager outside the premier league'? or is it the 'best manager outside the premier league who members on here would like to see replace Alan Pardew'? as many seem to be alluding to, which is apparently against forum rules. Just asking!
