I guess it's no coincidence that when Bartley plays and wins all his headers like someone posessed, it brings out the best form in O'Shea also. Clearly lessens the burden. Long may it continue!

Gourlay's not going to get a grilling tomorrow, the event is to introduce a new manager.

The message will be a fresh start.

Yeah I agree, can't see any big questions being answered by Gourlay tomorrow

So it turns out the nonsense on twitter over the last 24/48 hours that the club was being pelted for was just that. There are many reasons to be angry at the board - what we don't need to be doing is jumping the gun and inventing more problems than exist from innuendo by anonymous gossiping online.

Here here! I assume Corberan will have met the players today, hopefully he can get some good sessions in and make it clear what he expects for the Sheff U game.

I'm quite excited  ;D

Guys relax. DOOD has tweeted  ;D

Let me guess - "Gourlay really penny pinching and taking the ****, Corberan not happy, could still get done today"? His contact must be really fantastic to have listened in to every single meeting we have. Gourlay himself doesn't have as much information!

You've still not cited a single example to back up your point of view. At best I would agree that other keepers have made mistakes as bad - for example with the ball at their feet but I don't recall a worse goal conceded from a shot on goal, a child should have saved it, yet alone a professional keeper. I'm only banging on about as well as your trying to pretend it was just one of those things, and should be accepted, rather than acknowledging it was a howler and moving on. Even their player couldn't believe it.

Moan moan moan seems to be the favourite dish of the day  ;D (Just kidding, I also thought it was a howler.)

West Bromwich Albion FC / Re: Jed Wallace signs official
« on: October 23, 2022, 04:43:36 PM »
Wallace is our most direct player.  He's not got the skills of Grady but he's more consistant.  Absolutely no issues with him at all, cracking signing.  We just need people around him to get the best out of him.

Agreed! It's so frustrating that there's nobody seemingly willing/able to get on the end of the balls into the box. The cut back to Swift needs to be utilised more often, because for whatever reason Grant just doesn't get into the right areas.

Hopefully Dike can get fit and is more the type of striker to get the most out of Wallace

He has hardly kicked a ball for us and you are complaining that he has had too much time on the pitch and writing him off already - moan moan moan seems to be the favourite dish of the day.

Haha I don't agree that he's "hardly kicked a ball for us", he is getting minutes most games and I'm just saying I haven't seen enough to justify his inclusion. I'm not writing him off at all, I'm saying I wouldn't have him in the first team right now and would work on fitness over the world cup break, because as of now, he hasn't delivered.

Does anyone think there may have been a bit of a sticking point with getting the new manager confirmed? I expected to hear that they were at the ground Saturday and negotiations would be concluded by now (if reports that it is Corberan who is our man after 2 interviews are to be believed).

Would it just be a case that everyone is taking the Sunday off?! You'd hope that the new man would have a full week with the players from Monday morning

To get match fit?

Not sure I'd be prioritising one players match fitness over immediate results right now. I'm sure he could get some minutes in the under 21s for now.

He also got 76 minutes under his belt against Swansea. How many more poor performances can he put in in the name of "getting fit"?

Hope we can get him fit over the world cup break, because at the minute it's like playing with 10 men when he comes on. Not sure why he keeps getting on to be honest.

I thought we played well and the referee was Milwall's best player. They have scored five more goals from set pieces than any other side in the league and we have defended manfully against a wave of crosses and corners. Bartley won everything in the air. Not much football been played as it's a wresting match. Team of thug and divers - pathetic dive for their freekick that lead to their goal - unlucky deflection in build up. This is a tough match and we have battled hard and done well so far. Still go either way.

Spot on. If the referee can grow a pair and stop giving the Milwall fans absolutely everything they ask for, I think we can still battle to a win 2nd half. Fingers crossed

Not sure how much this source can be trusted, but Alex Crook from TalkSport says Carvahal is a non-starter:

"Contrary to reports Carlos Carvalhal has not been interviewed by #WBA and is taking time off after leaving a club in the UAE."

Dan will be happy, DOOD has spoken. Carvalhal has rejected us according to the omnipotent one.

How is this guy considered credible by anyone? He has thousands of followers who seem to listen (don't worry I realise you aren't one them)! Completely baffling to me. It's like a cult!

Not after any trouble so please don't bite... but I wouldn't mind Carvalhal personally.

Can't say I'm up to date with Portuguese or UAE football (not sure that can be judged after just 4 games there), but I find what I've read about him quite promising. We'd at least go from a manager with no plan, to... Well maybe a manager with too many  ;D

Only a couple of years ago that the next big thing Porto manager was calling him the best coach in Portugal

Blackpool have only 2 points more than us.

He isn't Blackpool manager any more, thats Michael Appleton who has them 2 points ahead of us

Jody Morris, why am against the hire on balance?

Firstly let's deal with the Gourlay and the Chelsea/ManU old boys network. This is the way our CEO operates through contacts with people he knows in the game. Frankly I would have been staggered if there wasn't some connection however tenuous between Gourlay and whoever we hired. We know that process is rubbish generally, but that does not mean that Morris will be rubbish but it almost certainly not the best we might have got. We spoke to a number of coaches outside that network and lo and behold the best happens to someone who is part of it.

Secondly I am generally in favour of hiring younger coaches. However when we hired Darren Moore I was very concerned that he had no experience as a Head Coach. If anything our circumstances as a club a good deal worse than when Darren took over and Jody Morris has no more experience as a Head Coach. It does not have to be masses of experience just enough to make a few mistakes and learn from them.

There isn't anything else but those are two huge issues and as with all hires the infrastructure around him is wholly inadequate and this makes his lack of experience a bigger issue.

I totally get what you're saying and would agree it's a big risk, but I don't really see an alternative to a risky appointment for us in this current situation. I don't think Dyche is the man, I personally think that's just going to end up with more unsuccessful crosses and long balls into our short strikers.

I hope this doesn't come across as argumentative or anything, genuine question, but would you rather Gourlay doesn't use his links? I understand that it went wrong with Bruce, but with (yet another) huge decision to make, I'd be more worried if he didn't consider his contacts. I'm completely against it when the candidate is completely past it and obviously a bad fit (Bruce), but that doesn't mean I'd want Gourlay to take a stab in the dark with someone he knows nothing about next time. If there are good things being heard about Morris, I think it's worth a shot myself

** Just to clarify further, Morris wouldn't be my first choice, I'd prefer Schumacher or McKenna myself. But I'd be excited and want to give him a chance if Morris got the gig - whether he's known to Gourlay or not

Why are so many against Jody Morris?

Because of the perception that it's Gourlay hiring "another friend". I believe Dood suggested it might even be as a "cash cow".

I personally think he's just the sort of coach we should be looking at - as long as we backed them up with an effective recruitment plan and gave them the support needed off the training ground (a lot to ask based on recent history, I know)

Why does anyone pay any attention to these characters like Dood or Sooty? Be suspicious if they haven't got a proper name. They probably can't hold down a proper job. Sounds like they are more interested in themselves.

I think it's mostly down to boredom. I get that it's a grim time to be an Albion fan, but it really seems like people go looking for outrage. Like they enjoy getting wound up almost as much as when we win a game. To be clear, I'm miserable and think the club is in a state, but I'm not ripping up my match ticket over something some "in the know" (they're not. at all.) account is tweeting.

I'm seeing people say "I'm done with the club" because of links to Morris, claiming that "it's another one of Gourlays mates the club stinks" etc. For all we know Gourlay and Morris hated each other!! Until I see the exchange of their Christmas cards, I think I'll avoid getting angry about it personally

Now "Football Insider" on twitter reporting that Jody Morris is close:

"- Jody Morris is in talks with West Brom to become their new manager. 💬

- Morris is now in the frame to replace Steve Bruce after making the club's final shortlist. 📝

- They want an appointment in place by the weekend. 🔜"

Interesting that the person who wrote this article is Pete O'Rouke, who I think is a former Sky Sports News journalist? But now seems to be freelance and doing work for betting sites etc. Wonder if he's just guessing based on the odds as well!

And yet its in E&S article gaz posted above.

No one really knows most of it is pure speculation  :)

Yes the E&S journalist who wrote the article clarified that none of the names have been approached or spoken to. It was then that "football analyst" backtracked.

I agree that it's all just speculation though! Doesn't seem to be any solid sources. The only thing I trust is that Corberan has been interviewed at least

My post was more directed to the line: "I reckon Sam was clever realised we are a shambles and thought there is no point keeping you up as I ay going to get backed and no one would" within the quoted post from BaggieBoy04.

Thought BigSam was a car crash personally. One of plenty over the last few years

Big Sam also knows the League and took West Ham he dis beat Wolves and Chelski and we would have survived but I reckon Sam was clever realised we are a shambles and thought there is no point keeping you up as I ay going to get backed and no one would. Big Sam actively didn't mind at first leading us in the Championship had it not took him a while to figure out what was going on we might have been safe when he did as I said we probably could have stayed up. But he had figured our we were rotten hence he left. You in a minority but I think Big Sam will be remembered for beating the Dingles again and playing arguably our best football that season against Chelsea.

Are you saying Big Sam deliberately let us get relegated?

He'll be remembered as the man who won 4 out of 26 matches for me. For what it's worth, I think he tried his best and failed.
