Saw some stats earlier on projected penalties this season, vs the prior 6.
This season is currently on for 292 penalties, 88 of which from handball.
The most penalties previously was 106 in 2016/17 the lowest being 80 in 17/18. From handball the current record is 19 which was last season, with the lowest being 6, also in 17/18.
Whatever we thought of last season, they’ve clearly made it worse. The balance is too out of sync too when you consider what an attacker can get away with (Havertz) and what defenders are being punished for.
Klopp made a similar point last night about delaying offside calls. An attacking team can still reasonably get a corner from being offside as a phase changes which is an advantage, but a defending side can only ever get what they should have in the first place. This clearly benefits the top sides.
Yes we want goals but clearly fairness should be far more important.
What a mess!
