World Cup 2018
« on: June 04, 2018, 09:25:53 AM »
Thursday, 14th June 2018, in 10 days time, sees the start of the World Cup

Who do you think will be the winners and why?

The above poll includes betting odds from bwin web site

I've gone for France, I just like the all round quality in their squad, particularly in attack

Goalkeepers: Hugo Lloris, Steve Mandanda, Alphonse Areola.

Defenders: Djibril Sidibe, Benjamin Pavard, Adil Rami, Raphael Varane, Samuel Umtiti, Presnel Kimpembe, Benjamin Mendy, Lucas Hernandez.

Midfielders: Paul Pogba, Blaise Matuidi, Corentin Tolisso, N'Golo Kante, Steven Nzonzi.

Forwards: Kylian Mbappe, Olivier Giroud, Antoine Griezmann, Ousmane Dembele, Florian Thauvin, Thomas Lemar, Nabil Fekir.

France or Germany will win it.  I've gone for Germany.

Don't see a South American country winning it in Russia.

England will to the Quarter Finals.

Sides to watch = Belgium and Croatia.

Fancy Argentina, best player in the world in Messi, have to have a chance. Germany will be there or thereabouts, as will France, Spain and Brazil.
Best of the rest, us and Belgium
Dark horses Mexico and Egypt.

5 votes for England yet none for Spain. Interesting poll. Can't fancy France or Argentina. Winners will come from Germany, Spain or Brazil.

I've gone for Germany. The French squad is class, but they seem to like imploding.

Spain have passed the peak of their powers for the time being. Brazil and Argentina both have great attacking talent but too many vulnerabilities. Think a well drilled Germany would take both apart.

Belgium could do well.

England always have enough talent that with some luck a Semi final isn't beyond the realms of possibility, but it wouldn't be a free flowing manner with some luck and resilience needed. Us supporters wouldn't care though.

Chose the Argies - think they will be there or thereabouts this time round

The French have a class side, so not ruling them out and the ussual suspects like Spain and Brazil will be in with a shout too

England to the QF's I reckon

Surprise team will be Mexico

I think Belgium will do well. Alot of skill and technical ability.
And I'm not just talking about Chadli.  :)

Snap. Argentina for me too. Hope they win it because if they do it's because of their attacking talent. Best attackers going in the tournament in my opinion and that's inclusive of France.

it'll come down to the ties in the elimination rounds of course, and I haven't really sat down to analyze it well, but I've been feeling Brazil for a while now. They dominated South American qualifying and have been in really good form for a while now.

Germany look the strongest squad overall. France, Brazil and Argentina might not quite have defensive discipline when it comes to the latter stages.

That Argentina strikeforce has to one of the best I've ever seen though. Four world class attackers in Messi, Aguero, Higuain and Dybala. Says it all when Icardi scored 29 in 34 in Serie A and couldn't even get in the squad.

If things go pretty much as they should on paper, Brazil could play Belgium in the quarter final and then go on to play either Portugal or France in that semi-final.

On the other side I've got Spain to be playing Argentina in one quarter-final with the winner playing the winner of Germany v England in that semi-final.

Basically, come the final 8 no-one should have an 'easy' match to get to the semi's. We'll probably be the weakest team if we make it that far. As always you'll probably get a couple of unlikely results along the way however.

So yeah, I've got France v Brazil in one semi, with Argentina v Germany in the other semi. Anyones bet from there really.

Edit - I'm thinking Brazil vs Argentina final could be quite interesting!

Got £10 on France to win it and Messi top goal scorer at 80/1.

Heading out there for the last group game against Belgium in Kaliningrad but looking forward to the whole tournament, can’t beat it football everyday!

“A prophet without honour: The story of George Raynor, the first English manager to reach a World Cup final”

Areal good read, not very complimentary to the FA, but they deserve nothing less for their actions over the years

So Spain have sacked their manager... Couldn't write it! Unbeaten in 20 games under him and boot for him for the way he handled his signing for Real Madrid.

I picked a dream team last night and didn't really notice until i'd finished that I had picked 4 Argentinians so I have gone for them! Also think Belgium will have a good tournament.

Depends if Belgium can play well in spite of Martinez being their coach. Criminal not to take Naingollan.

I assume you mean from a west Midlands club? Not sure there would be that many to choose from anyway with only Livermore making recent squads. Realistically Southgate is only going to pick players from the premier league clubs so he could only really choose from Livermore, Foster, Dawson and Gibbs.
